The new $12 million outdoor complex, named "The Shuttle and 747 Carrier," is to open to the public in February 2015.
"The Shuttle and 747 Carrier will give visitors the world's first and only all-access pass to an authentic and realistic journey through the inside of the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-041212a.html) as well as an unforgettable experience aboard the full-scale shuttle model," Space Center Houston stated in a release. "The up close and personal access to American aviation history will reveal the shuttle program's amazing ingenuity, clever innovation and awe-inspiring complexity."
An artist's rendering of the planned exhibit shows the 747 jumbo jet, known by its tail number "NASA 905," parked outside Space Center Houston where the space shuttle (http://www.space.com/16726-space-shuttle.html) mockup sits today. A gantry-like structure sits next to the air- and spacecraft combo that will provide visitors the opportunity to climb inside both vehicles.
The carrier aircraft is currently at Ellington Field, home to Johnson Space Center's aircraft operations, located about 5 miles (8 kilometers) from Space Center Houston. To get the aircraft to the visitor center, its wings and tail will be removed, and its fuselage will be sectioned in three.
The jumbo jet is expected to be in place at Space Center Houston by this November. The work to hoist the 130,000-pound (60,000-kilogram) shuttle mockup atop the airplane will follow during the first quarter of 2014.

Because Tokyo probably doesn't even have the space! We're glad to solve that problem for them, though.

I don't know about this.....looking at that artist's rendition, it doesn't appear that they are even going to attempt to shield it from the weather with an inflatable bubble-wrap type tent.......poor planning there..

There's a Walmart in Weehawken off of rt9 that had a deal on canopies. It was the one next to the Wegman's. Shame man. Fuel farms in the background would have made an excellent backdrop.

Very exciting that they will mount it like that!!!

Glad it's at Johnson, too. Very cool.

Hopefully it will stop all the bellyaching that New York got Enterprise while Houston got nothing.

It would cost a fortune to erect a tent around something that big and tall. Not to mention outdoor exhibits look better from a photography point of view. And why would you want to shield the shuttle from weather elements, its just a mock up ???

I, for one, would love to see how that holds up outside in a Gulf powered hurricane.

Probably as well as the rockets in the Rocket Garden at the Kennedy Space Center or the planes at the National Museum of Naval Aviation.

It's peaceful now, but since we've been here more than once, let's not get angry or argumentative in this one, ok folks?

If memory serves me correct, that's the mockup that was outside at KSC for years next to the boosters and other paraphernalia from the STS program, I'm sure she's capable of surviving outside, and with proper care she'll remain beautiful for years to come!

It's Houston, all they need to worry about is drunken, rowdy cow tippers.

Seems like a legitimate concern to me!

Actually, that's north Texas. Houston's big worry is an over-zealous Cinco de Mayo celebration. XD

Thankfully the shape of the Shuttle isn't exactly perfect for a sombrero to be made up and thrown on every May 5th!
