Whats going on over long island?

Its about 8:00 and I decided to check flight aware. It seems like there's maybe 10 + aircraft in a holding patter. I live by the CCC VOR and seeing the planes passing over at FL180 is an everyday thing but the planes just pass over and turn back east! Does anybody know what might be going on?

A lot of strange routings today. While grilling dinner I was watching Planefinder, and one of the AA flights from the Caribbean was sent over to ROBER intersection to sequence in. This was around 6pm. Very unusual.
