Well, this proves that Nikon has abandoned its semi-pro DX line, and that there will be no D400. Looks like a nice camera, but I'll still get a D300s.

William, while the D300S is a very good and capable camera, I assure you it is dated technology. For its time, it was great... it beat my $5,000+ D2Xs in every aspect except handling and ergonomics (as I have stated many times)

The D7100 is so much better in every respect, it is not even a fair comparison. The Metering is better, the AF is better, the color is better, RAW is better, WB is better, the rear display is better... I am not going to point out the obvious sensor differences and of course the video is night and day. They have also upped the body construction to meet semi-pro levels with an alloy frame as opposed to mostly plastic.

About the only thing the D300S has now is a better price :tongue: and more seriously, frame rate. The 12MP sensor at 12bits could get 8fps while the D7100 seems to top out at 6fps, but at 24MP... double the pixel count and almost double the density... and likely at 14bit RAW ... let's see what the buffer capacity looks like.

I am still hoping for a chameleon D4s to have a 36MP sensor with a 16MP DX crop mode capable of 10-12fps

All vaid points for sure. It's just a shame they couldn't have put all those features in a D300 form factor- tougher build with external controls.

With my D90, several times I've accidentally moved the mode dial(don't ask me how) and screwed myself out of a usable image because I was all of a sudden shooting in Manual and had no idea. With aviation, everything is happening so fast I don't always realize that I'm taking 1-second exposures. I almost blew getting the Air Berlin Oneworld during UN week because of that. That problem went away when I started shooting with a D700.

The D300s is certainly outdated, but unless someone wants to start paying me to shoot(a privelege several here enjoy), I'll rock the hell out of that sensor. Plus it takes the same battery and grip as my D700:cool: Additionally, I have no use for DSLR video, never even used it on the D90

That's good! I had situations sight the D7000 where the dial rotated and either underexposed or overexposed my images. According to one site the buffer on the D7100 is small .... 6 shot RAW buffer which is disappointing.

6 shot raw buffer will definitely signal a pro DX body is coming... no way anyone, even an amateur can live with that shallow a buffer.

At this point if Nikon were to announce a D400 I would be shocked. It seems to me that it's really either FX or mirror less that are their future. Until then, I will abuse my ancient D200 and my even older D100 until they either quit or my trigger finger breaks lol.

Damn Nikon complicating my decision... I was set to get a D7000 on the cheap and a Sigma 70-200 2.8 but now I've gotta factor in the D7100 factor, why can't this decision be easy??
