Cleaning up my folders last night, and I come across this... Talk about being stupid and naive. I had only gone spotting commercial for maybe a month... if only I had known what I know now. I see no images online of this airline at JFK. Was it a regular? I could kick myself... didn't even pay attention to it as I was shooting the stupid SIA. ...

Nice shot. This is the first time I've seen this airline. Thanks for sharing.

Some photoshop magic, and that 747 and pole will be gone. Poof!

Ahhh..........you were a young grasshopper then! Hopefully you've learned well and won't let this happen ever again. Remember those night missions :P

Manny....here is a shot of a bunch of tails sitting at T4 and she did stand out in that bunch. Oh well! Also found some other stuff I didn't even know I had (like Delta with their old tail colors and a US Airways in their old C/S as well. http://mbsphotography.smugmug.com/Aviation/Odd-Stuff/i-gC5xGnd/0/L/Tails_01_JFK_28Dec2010-L.jpg

You call those missed opportunities? How about being handed an SP in your lap. Perfect sun and in trying to get the Sam Chui LAX rotate shot. While being able to get the F&R to take me to the runway I forget a 747 has a much longer wingspan than a Mad dog or 737. While almost losing my head and after I dove into the tumbleweeds this is all I could get. Only redeeming thing is I have a decent shot of setting this up again but what a FAIL! It sounded so cool though as it went over me. The Captain called me when he got to LAS and said it was the funniest thing he ever saw.

Wow, Nick, still..what a shot!

I had a comedy of errors at SXM that still haunt me (although they weren't rare planes). I was taking sunset shots, landscape orientation, and one after another arrival were all way too high, making the plane small when trying to include the water. I finally change to portrait orientation, and the first arrival is a bizjet that is one of the lowest arrivals of the week. Since the plane was so close to the horizon, there was way too much beach and sky in the pic, and I had to zoom out to not cut off the wings :frown:

Not to mention the Amerijet 722 with beautiful clouds that I shot at ISO1600, the insanely-low A319 where I only filled 60% of the frame, or a side shot of P4-MES I screwed up, by accidentally having my top AF point active.

Thanks, ahh what could have been. Here it is right after it went over me. Again even though it was a missed shot the experience was quite epic.

Nick and Cary, been there done that for ALL that you have explained :)

Nick, for next time, make sure you at least do some homework :-)

http://www.giangrandi.ch/optics/lenses/focalcalc.html

At SXM I learned that the best lens for these types is a 14-24mm on Full Frame, a 10-24mm on Crop and / or a Fisheye at 16mm FF or 12mm crop sensor!!

And when you go for that shot with a wide angle at SXM, the plane is way high. When you stay back and use a 24-70mm, the plane makes an insanely-low approach, and you get heads blocking the gear :)

No so much homework but being complacent. That SP was there for two weeks and was coming back. I should have went to the roof of the casino right across the river. I would have got a better bank than Hobe with that.

No Nick, I think your shot angle was a much better idea. Anyone can get an SP banking, but, how many have the super duper SXM Maho Beach like shot? Yours is likely the only one even with the clipped wing.. no?

??? I don't think there are 20 of these flying. Not to mention I have access to the top of a tall casino tower so the bank would be close and look air to air with mountains underneath. That is epic! The runway shot is good too. Superbowl is coming and they will probably be kicking out Sheldon to get room for more VIPs in LAS. I got to hook this up!

I totally forgot about my Epic Fail at SXM in 2011 when the only recorded visit of a TACA could have been properly rendered. Ah, what can I say, I was excited as an 18 year old boy in a wh0r3house, but I digress

And the one that I used for the db which was the best I could do with a 70-200mm on full frame from 20 feet away... Nick, eat your heart out

Nick you may not think so but that SP rotation shot, even with the wing clipped, is an awesome shot- reminds me of some of Joe Pries' or Art Brett's work

Thanks, it was a miracle I held on to the camera and shot it from my back. Another guy who shot it was a couple hundred yards away and almost got us in the pic. That would have been Biblical.

A pair of well position GoPro Hero 3 Black Editions would have garnered really nice still frames and awesome HD footage!!
