Rwy 4/22 must be closed this morning as I notice that LGA is using Rwy 13 for arrivals as well as for departures. They are also using the arrival pattern which ressembles an arrival on Rwy 22 but turns westbound over south Bronx then heads 130 degrees into Rwy 13. Is there a name for this visual approach? I can't locate an arrival chart for this approach?

According to LGA ATIS (you can call 718-424-4713 to listen) Rwy 4/22 is closed today. What you are seeing is the ILS 22 Approach, circle to land Rwy 13. It's not a typical approach, but it's not rare to see either. You may remember they were using that approach on Kids Day two or three years ago.

Thanks. Yes I recall seeing this approach used during Kids Day at LGA a while back. It was also used during the US Open. I guess this approach is not rarely used as is the ILS 13L Approach at JFK. I was wondering if it had a name like VOR A, etc. EWR has a similar pattern using the approach to Rwy 22L then circle to land Rwy. 29 when there is a strong NW cross-wind.

VOR-A is a specific type of VOR approach.

I was out at LGA yesterday and can confirm they were using an ILS22 circle 13 for most of the afternoon while 4/22 was closed. 4/22 reopened around 1530 and they went to an on 4/off 13 config.

ILS22 approach circle rwy13 is not very rare from what I believe. Along time ago they had visual 13 approaches from the south but I can imagine because of how NYC is they try not to keep planes that close to the city which may make since. So the aircraft from south will do the same as they would for ILS22. They will trun their aircraft over Westchester County and do the ILS22 approach circle 130 to rwy13

a VOR-A is not really a specific type of approach, just a specific name for a VOR approach. the -A means there are more than just 1 VOR approaches into the airport and is there to differentiate between the two. the same goes for RNAV approaches except they're in a counter-alphabetical order. (that make sense?) meaning, they start with Z and work backwards. there are 4 different VOR approaches into LGA:

VOR/DME-H: http://www.airnav.com/depart?http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1213/00289VDH.PDF
VOR RY 4: http://www.airnav.com/depart?http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1213/00289VDH.PDF
VOR-F: http://www.airnav.com/depart?http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1213/00289VF.PDF

at one point i believe there WAS a localizer RY 13 approach but was decommissioned when the EMAS was installed on the end of RY 13.

on a side note it's nice to see the river visual 13 is still on the books!!
