PC or Mac? I think you mentioned you were on a Mac, but if you have access to a PC also, I have had good success with PC Inspector, which is free:

Cool...if I recall correctly, there were a few different methods/modes, and one of them worked the best for me. So you might want to experiment a bit if it doesn't work the first time.

Hey Eric, I heard you had a rough time with PhotoRec. It has worked great for me in the past with other people's cards gone bust. I have fortunately NEVER had an issue with my own SanDisk Cards and they all come with free software from Sandisk anyway. I have used PhotoRec on my own cards after accidentally formatting them (more than once) and also the SanDisk proprietary software as well.

It may have had something to do with FreeBSD (which is what OS-X is at the bottom) as I always run it on PC.

2nd attempt did not work, just got a bunch of crap files.

Now when I put the card back in the camera I do see some of the images, but I can't even get those off

And here's an odd thing, if I load up Lightroom the only images it sees on the card are the images previous to my format of the card this morning. all the images today are stuck somewhere.

Eric, DON'T TOUCH the card... if I can would you be willing to let me have a shot at it? We have some forensic software at work that may do the trick... let me know

Success! I used the card today. no problems. Images have been recovered. I don't think it was the card at all, but somehow Lightroom got confused with the previous import.

Thanks Manny and Cary....

Glad you got it sorted out... make sure you have LR 4.1 or above as lots of bugs were corrected, some dealing with image import..

Sorry, missed the point. Many of card manufacturers offer their own recovery solutions, by the way.

There's lots of software solutions floating around out there. Google it, but you already know that. Most will be a paid product.
I hear great things about Easeus, cardrescue, Sandisk offers a link to a sight they recommend.
You can try Recuva as its FREE!!! Ive had success with this one on hard drives quite often.

Err, wut?
