LGA Kids Day is Saturday, September 15th from 12pm-4pm. Open to the public, with or without kids! Enter near the Marine Air Terminal. Parking is free, signs will be everywhere. Please read through the thread for details. See you there!

Was just curious if they're going to have another Kids Day at LaGuardia again this Sept. ??
I sure hope so because it's always a great time there !!

2012-07-13, 03:51 PM
im sure they will. im not sure of the date yet.

2012-07-13, 04:57 PM
I could not find anything on the official Website yet. However, LaGuardia Airport Kiwanis Club Kids Day is listed on Navy's list of 2012 Eligible Events (http://www.navy.mil/navco/airshows/EligibleEvents_06282012.pdf). The date on the list is Sept. 15.

From what I understand (Drum roll Please) after 2 unsuccessful attempts they hope to have a KC-135 this year !!!!!

Any updates on the 2012 day? I may have to try this event out!

2012-08-06, 11:06 PM
It's going to be September 15 this year. Their web site is down, but the Navy has the info. http://www.navy.mil/navco/airshows/EligibleEvents_07312012.pdf

2012-08-13, 05:34 PM
OK, I just confirmed it. Update your post, OP.

2012-08-18, 11:57 AM
Where did you get that information that they denied Concorde because it would encourage spotters?

You really need to stop the "everyone's out to get us" stuff. It's not even relevant in this thread.

Of course it will be here this year...

2012-08-18, 06:10 PM
I heard a KC-10 will be coming again.

2012-08-19, 06:23 PM
What time does the event begin ?

2012-08-20, 03:39 AM
Usually begins at noon.

2012-08-20, 10:13 AM
Ill be there for sure, wish I could have brought my little Max but he will be away :(

Too bad this is on the same weekend as the Oceana Air Show this year,
because it will be interesting to see if the NAVY actually sends anything

2012-08-27, 10:06 AM
My fiance and i plan to show there

2012-08-31, 03:27 PM
Got a nice call from my buddy Chuck in the AA LGA Tower this morning, Chuck for sometime has been the un-official Military aircraft coordinator for this event and is usually in the cockpit of the AA display aircraft. Anyway if anyone would know what aircraft are coming this is the man, here is what he expects. DL A-319, US A-319, AA 738 (he is working on trying to get another fairly new one with the Boeing Sky Interior like last year), a private Cirrus, Marines C-130, and as hoped, everything looks official that we will have (drumroll please) a KC-135 from McGuire. They had hoped to bring both it and a KC-10 again but the latter was deployed. Sadly no luck on any fighters but for me the KC-135 more than makes up for that. I hope to see many of you their and lets hope for a nice day ! Cheers LGA777

2012-09-01, 08:34 PM
Drooling over the KC-135!

2012-09-01, 09:12 PM
I will be there.

2012-09-01, 10:06 PM
Dang, this is the same day as the Newark collectibles show, looks cool though

2012-09-04, 11:16 PM
Well the collectible show starts about 9am while the kids day event opens its doors at noon so its possible to get there early, buy what you need and rush to LGA. It would be absolutely brutal lugging all the stuff around but it could be done. Keep in mind that the show scheduled to be held last November at the Courtyard Marriott was cancelled so this could be the only collectible show of the year.

2012-09-05, 05:04 AM
I thought the KC-10 from JFK was going to return for this... be on the lookout just in case ... imagine a KC-10 landing at KLGA!

2012-09-05, 08:04 AM
...imagine a KC-10 landing at KLGA!
I don't have to imagine, I saw it last year...

2012-09-05, 10:37 PM
BTW what time does the kids day event end ? Like around 4pm or so ?

2012-09-05, 11:38 PM
Yes - they usually start herding people off the ramp around 4pm, but some of us take our time walking over to the bus. The last few years, I was on the last bus off the ramp around 5-5:30pm.

2012-09-06, 01:38 PM
I don't have to imagine, I saw it last year...

I think I might be in the pic, about 1/4 way up the stairs.

2012-09-08, 06:11 AM
I remember that JFK was in consideration for a Concorde but declined. I presumed the reason was that spotters would be wandering the grounds as a result. This would not be the case. I went several times to view the Shuttle while at JFK and saw only a few spotters, so my assumption about the Concorde was incorrect. Having a Concorde on display near Federal Circle off the Van Wyck would have caused numerous problems including traffic slow-downs, traffic accidents, pedestrians attempting to cross with no traffic lights as assistance, plus security and parking problems. Maybe they could have found a spot for Concorde elswewhere on the premises like LHR and CDG did but let's say "that ship has sailed" so we are indeed fortunate that Intrepid won the bid. JFK used to welcome tourists with 3 gorgeous chapels and lit fountains where the parking lots now occupy. They even featured a small observation deck at the IAB for the cost of 10 cents!

2012-09-08, 06:22 AM
My small apartment already looks like an airport so I must avoid collectible shows. My landlord forced me to dump lots of stuff including the collection of Braniff timetables. Each month had a different color cover. My other stuff had to be dumped as well. It was traumatic. Only my Concorde collection is still intact. It will be buried with me. My 5 zillion photo albums of Kodacolor prints is hidden in my clothing closets and drawers. Not to mention hundreds of models I assembled, many of which have peeling-off decals which cannot be replaced (Laker D10 1/100 scale) and posters which airlines would send me for free all-over my walls. As I say, a collectible show for me would be like bringing a recovering alcoholic to a bar. See you guys at LGA and keep collecting and enjoy!

2012-09-08, 02:23 PM
Why would your landlord have authority to tell you what to keep? Was their a health hazard associated?

2012-09-08, 02:33 PM
Agree with Phil...........why would the landloard tell you what to keep.

2012-09-10, 09:12 AM
Not to be the thread Police but since this thread is about Kids Day not one site members collection, so getting back to Kids Day the advance weather forecast looks very promising so I hope to see a lot of you their Phil I hope I did not overstep my zero authority on here. Respectfully LGA777

2012-09-10, 09:47 AM
Yes, the weather does look promising for now .. See everyone there

2012-09-10, 07:10 PM
No worries on getting us back on track. Little early to rely on the weather forecast but I'm looking forward to it!

I'm really looking forward to this. I read about it last year about a week after it happened and was bummed I had missed it. Hopefully I'll get to meet a few of you there.

2012-09-10, 10:17 PM
Anyone going to try to attend both the airshow and the collectible show ?

2012-09-11, 02:41 AM
Have a family party that day, but may see how close I can cut it, just to swing by for some quick photos. Damned obsession... : )

2012-09-13, 05:57 AM
Sorry about that mention of my collection but it was brought-up that the collectibles show was on the same day. To get back to Kids Day, the weather looks fine. Any word of what will be on display? I am unable to view the LGA Kiwanis site. Are other members having the same problems? In past years, they posted an announcement for the event. Just wondering!

2012-09-13, 06:05 AM
Can't wait. This is the event of the year for me. I have been attending the US Open nearby and viewed many of the LGA aircraft but to see them close-up is fantastic! Weather looks good too !

2012-09-14, 12:26 PM
4/22 closed for tomorrow, here is the NOTAM. 13/31 Ops tomorrow.

LGA 09/058 (A1205/12) LGA RWY 4/22 CLSD WEF 1209151000-1209152200

2012-09-14, 02:41 PM
Am I reading the NOTAM correctly that the RY will be closed from 1000-2200 Local? The event is scheduled for much less than that. I know they need prep. Time , but I guess they need a couple of hours cleanup as well. Enjoy! I can't make it.

2012-09-14, 02:56 PM
They often close the runway for scheduled work on the weekend, this isn't necessarily due to the Open House. In fact, in past years, we have seen arrivals on Rwy 4 during Kids Day.

2012-09-14, 03:57 PM
Yeah, that's for regular construction that they do on Saturdays during the summer, since it's the slowest day of the week.

Those times are zulu, no local, so it's closed from 6am-6pm local.

2012-09-14, 09:38 PM
Forecasted wind direction for Saturday is NNW turning to NW mid day so almost def up and down 31. For anyone hoping to catch the KC-135 arrival I am told they expect to leave McGire around 0900L so I would guessitmate around a 0920-0940 arrival. I am told the Marines C-130 was pulled at the last minute so the KC-135 will likely be the only Military visitor. Not sure what DL is bringing over likely a 319 again, US will have N742PS again by request and AA is bringing a fairly new 738 again with the Boeing Sky Interior. Last year we had a nice turn out of NYC Aviation members hopefully the same again and hope to see many of you their.

Cheers LGA777

2012-09-14, 09:58 PM
I plan to be there around noon with my two boys. Anyone know if anything from the Airpower Museum is coming this year? Last year, they sent the C-47. A few Skytypers also were on hand.

2012-09-14, 10:20 PM
The AAM is planning to bring the C-47 to LGA again this year.

2012-09-15, 05:38 AM
I cheated and already saw PSA (US Airways) arrive at LGA yesterday at 1313. I thought she was staying-put but she made an unbelievable 7 flights total yesterday between DCA, LGA and BOS. Is that a record or something? I never heard of an airliner making 7 flights on the same day. Anyway, she arrived at LGA last night at 9:53. Amazing. I wonder if the same crew made all 7 flights. I love this aircraft but was hoping secretly to see one of US Airways other retro aircraft. But "Smiley" is like an old friend. Enjoy!

Thanks John

2012-09-15, 08:57 AM
No C-130? that's it, looking doubtful for me.
Actually had a change to my plans, so I am going to skip this year.

2012-09-15, 09:16 AM
KC-135 just arrived at LGA

2012-09-15, 09:29 AM
My kids just backed out, I was planning to do the same, however, why not spend a few hours spotting LGA up close and personal on a beautiful day? So I will be heading down by noon, if I recognize anyone, I'll stop by and say hello. I'll be wearing a bright yellow shirt with my 100 - 400 on camera, so if you see me, say hello, I won't bite.

2012-09-15, 10:12 AM
The KC-135 landed around 0910, has the cool Black nose but sadly no JTD-3's, this one has CFM's. Looked really cool seeing the silhouette of what is basically a 707 flying the Expressway visual to 31, REAL COOL !

2012-09-15, 10:46 AM
three Skytypers just took off from Republic

2012-09-15, 11:00 AM
I believe that the C-47 just took off as well (11:00)

I don't think any KC-135Es are flying anymore, only the -R models with the new engines.

The last E-model flew to the boneyard (http://www.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123169666) three years ago this month.

Eagerly awaiting photos of the KC-135 at LGA...

Eagerly awaiting photos of the KC-135 at LGA...

Here you go Moose:

http://joeogden.net/planes/LGA 9-15-12/IMG_4246b 1024.JPG

I only took a single image of the statics and as you can see, it wasn't even a full shot and it's blown out at the top. This year seemed very lackluster for me, I only stayed for about an hour. My highlight was checking out an M4 that one of the Police officers were showing. It was nice and had a red dot sight. I took several images of planes taking off as well, but it's LGA, very limited on the type of aircraft flying in.

Hopefully someone else took a better shot for you Moose.

2012-09-15, 05:07 PM
Here's a close up of the planes info, cropped from the above image.

Here are the shots of static displays from today. Spotting shots are in that forum:

Hi, Mark!

2012-09-15, 05:28 PM
Thanks, Joe! When I finally sort through the boxes in the garage and come across my logbook, I'll have to see if I ever flew that airplane. I think we had a couple of 58-00xx serial numbers, but I don't remember -0010 offhand.

2012-09-15, 08:26 PM
Moose, got some decent shots of the KC-135 arriving and some so-so ones of the departure all the way from the Kids Day Parking lot plus cockpit, interior (if you could call it that) even the boom operators station which was interesting. Surprisingly we were allowed to stay around long enough to even get video of the engine starts. I loved that my little 5 year old was like 50 feet away from all that noise and didn't phase her in the least, she loved it and the whole day. Most of the KC-135 crew are part time with the NJ Air National Guard and this particular crew were mostly AA Pilots in their full time jobs. The Captain or aircraft Commander is a NY based AA 757 driver and super nice guy. Cheers LGA777

Today was a lot of FUN for my daughter and I and was nice seeing some of you their. I would like to give two praises. First to Chuck Eason of the AA Tower. Chuck is the reason we had a KC-135 today, a KC-10 last year and most of the Military aircraft for past Kids Days. He has some serious contacts in all branches of the Military and spends countless hours of his own time arranging things every year. In addition he also coordinates AA's display aircraft and two years in a row managed to snag one of AA newest 737-823's. Last year N870NN was only a few weeks old, this year only slightly older N895NN made its first flight on June 6, 2012 and was delivered to AA on July 3, 2012 and currently only has 252 cycles on her. Although AA's is not my favorite scheme of all time their is something about being close up to an AA Boeing when they are that new, really nice. So thank you Chuck, next year is going to be pretty hard to top the KC-10 and now KC-135. My second praise to my daughter who will be six on the 26th. While she really seems to Love airplanes she also understands how much I enjoy them to. Today we got in line at 1120 AM and left the parking lot after the KC-135 and C-47 departed around 1700. She never once said Daddy lets go Daddy I'm tired she just stayed with me Happy and Cheerful ALL DAY and didn't complain about anything once. I am so blessed and Lucky !!! Cheers LGA777

Ron, so happy the day went well for you. Your beautiful daughter looked liek she was having a ball...should mt 5yo nephew become single again...I may have to introduce the two!

Was a good Kids Day. Was a treat seeing the KC-135, the first non-regional 4-engine jet at LGA since 1968. There were not as many other aircraft there, but the presentations were nice. Rock climbing wall and the typical layouts from the DOC, PAPD and NYPD mounted and aviation units. I had a great time.

Did you know that the NYPD Bell helicopters such as N412PD and N414PD are not just two helicopters? The two registrations have been attached to several Bell's that just get re-registered. When N412PD crash-landed at Floyd Bennett a couple years ago..it was only a few months old and not the N412PD that I knew of for years and years. I don't know if that was common knowledge but I didn't know. Glad that, though the 3 officers on that chopper were injured, that they lived thanks to the flotation devices.

Great to see everyone out there!

2012-09-15, 10:57 PM
Moose, Fred, Manny and other's...........you guys were missed! I met up with Kaz, unfortunately the light wasn't that great, but as Moose would say "who's cares about the light, it's a KC-135 landing at LGA"!

On short final for 31 at LGA, she arrived around 9:15am according to my clock.

I had an absolutely wonderful time there today. It was great to meet Phil, Ron, and a bunch of others. Always nice to be able to match some names and faces to the handles. The KC-135 was amazing, and the crew was very professional and knowledgable. The practically brand-new 737-800 was another highlight, and I thought the AA crew was super friendly. And the views! Despite an hour and a half wait to see the 737 (the one thing that seriously needed improvement I thought), I was rarely bored with the constant departures. Add in some amazing weather with blue skies and just enough clouds to give some background depth and I'd say it was a great day.

2012-09-16, 06:45 AM
Kudos to the Kiwanis Club; I stayed til closing. Had a wonderful time with all my friends. I was surprised that they had the patience to wait on the long line to enter the AAL B738; well worth the wait. Delta gave a great box of munchies on the way out; I munched on the long train ride home. The blue sky was a bonus. I was curious why several members were absent. I guess they attended the memorabilia show. The LGA team did a great job of using Rwy 31 all afternoon for both arrivals and departures with minimal delays. This is the first Kids Day sadly where I noticed the old Tower was gone; I guess it had to go. Great time had by all; wish JFK held a similar party; maybe one day!

2012-09-16, 08:49 AM
Rock climbing wall and the typical layouts from the DOC, PAPD and NYPD mounted and aviation units.

Pretty cool they brought one of their AirSea Rescue Bell 412s!! Would have been nice if the "unmarked" B412 was there but thats top secret!! LOL!!
BTW Phil did you know that the PAPD disbanded their aviation unit a few years ago? Basically it was reported they were flying as an executive transport more than as a LE ship and was deemed a waste of money!! Too bad, they had cool looking S-76s!!
Great weather and great pictures guys!!

2012-09-16, 01:41 PM
I did not know that either... I see I'm behind on the local rotor news! Makes sense about PAPD, I almost forgot about them.

2012-09-16, 02:59 PM
great shots you guys, its a shame i didnt make it out this time. going through alot of crap. Next year ill sure be there. hopefully they bring back the KC-135 again

Great shots of the departures from Rwy 31 from Kids Day. I saw those flights but my crappy point-and-shoot was too slow. It was a great time. Where else can we walk around an airport for a few hours, board actual aircraft, sit in the captain's seat, chat with him, get to sit in passenger seats and get a goody bag and beverages to boot. I am still walking around on a "high".

Complete with a friendly wave from the pilot. Enjoy all!
