I finally got myself down to BWI yesterday to get some things I had been wanting to catch. The controllers at BWI must have studied with the greats at JFK though, as I had been at the 'official' spotting location no longer than 30 minutes when they changed runways on me. So, I went from planes landing right in front of me to takeoffs coming at me, which made for mostly unusable belly shots. So I was forced to get 'creative' with my locations. Also, the weather down there was playing all kinds of tricks on me, with passing t-storms(one of which apparently contained a microburst) occasionally drenching the place. All in all though I got some decent photos.

Have a great weekend

This is what I really went down there for. Unfortunately, because of the last-minute scramble to find a new location, this was a grab shot through the windshield. It was either shoot it through the windshield or get no shot at all. I have cleaned it up the best I can.

Nice set, some of my favorite shooting is when the background sky is dark and the sun is shining.

Nice job.

You went out of your way for a BAC-111 that has the mumps? ;)

Amazing catch. :)

Wow, that's a catch indeed. So what happened? They used the far runway?

Yep, they were shooting 33L approaches when I first got there then the wind shifted to the south as forcasted, so they switched to 10/15R arrivals and 15R/15L departures. So I went on a quest to find a decent spot to grab the rwy 10 arrivals. The 1-11 popped out from behind some trees as I was driving and I slammed on the brakes and fired off the shots. If I hadn't been keeping an eye out for it, by the time I would have realized what it was it would have been too late.

Between tolls and gas it cost $57 to get down and back. I'll have to let some time pass before going back to try for a better shot.

I know that story all too well, most recently with Arik Air  Although Cary has (not) forgiven me, I still kick myself. Is this BAC-111 a regular bird at BWI?

Besides the 1-11 they do have other testbed aircraft that they use so I'm sure they get rotated. According to one of the locals I met down there they seem to come and go on a pretty regular basis on weekdays, but there's no telling which one they'll be using on the particular day you're there

I think I read here recently that Arik Air was going to be changing its arrival and departure times- that will make our lives hella easier won't it

Yeah, I think December... the rarest A345 will be a regular thing

So does anyone want to explain what that bird with the humps is?

It's Northrop Grumman's avionics test bed.

Great photos all around. Sorry I didn't get to warn you about the weather. I went to college in Baltimore. I used to tell freshmen or families of my friends who didn't visit frequently "welcome to Baltimore. If you don't like the weather, stick around another half hour (for when it would inevitably change"). Glad you got what you went down for. I want to get down there sometime after the summer's over to visit some friends and take some photos.

Its always fun when you have to slam on the brakes and fire off a few shots to get what youre after. Makes it all that much more rewarding. You hot some beauties in there too!

Btw, a day trip to JFK including gas and tolls costs me about $100 ;)
