I think I remember reading that the emergency happened after V1, but the pilot aborted anyway, even though that was totally against procedure. It was 31L so I'm sure he thought he had enough room to set it back down and stop. I'm no pilot but it didn't seem like that plane was going to be very controllable. A great example of knowing when to break the rules in order to save lives.
