How is the angle of the sun for the show? Is the flightline set up so the sun is at your back during the performances? If so, I may consider going.

Thanks for posting the info Phil, I was starting to think that it wasn't going go to happen because there was so little info on it. A B1-B, wow, missed the one a few years back at Jones Beach.

As much as I'd like to see the KC-10, KC135, and C-17 fly in formation, I'm not going to waste my gas for crap lighting.

I really wish that these shows would take the light into consideration. Granted I know that 80% of the crowd isn't there to take top quality photos, but still would be niceto go to an airshow and not have it backlit.

yeah the ramp is on the north side of the field so you're facing south...there CAN be some ok shots but not really worth it unless you're already in town.

Yeah, and at 4.25/gal, and a truck that gets 14mpg on a GOOD day, I'm not making the 5 hour drive for a few "CAN be some ok shots".

Besides the crap lighting, the traffic is usually nightmare also !!
I'd love to see the BONE flybys but unfortunately I'll have to pass on this show.

Eric, I was there as well...both days actually, and the first day the show was cancelled or weather. They do have a decent show, and shots are definitely salvageable.

The traffic is like Oceana. The show... is not. Last time I was there, I got the OSI harassing for taking a picture of the F-22. I won't be returning.

A few years back, 2006, maybe - the first time they had an air show at McGuire since 9/11 - they had an F-22 on the static display ramp. They had CAP cadets along the rope line around the back of the aircraft, telling people they couldn't photograph the rear of the aircraft. It's possible a few shots were taken at the end of the day, when most people, including the CAP-types, had left the ramp. Not that I would have done anything like that, mind you, I'm just saying...

F-22 at Dayton Airshow in 2008 was off limits directly from behind... engines were covered and had an armed Marine asking everyone within earshot to not bother with pictures.

I'll be there all weekend especially since I'm about 35 minutes away. They also updated the static display and if everything shows, they are going to have a FANTASTIC ramp full of goodies! Heck, in 2000, 2005, 2007, and 2008 there were some good static displays... I do recall in 2008 one or two people got interrogated for taking close up photos of the Alaskan E-3 that showed up...

If you want to see photos of the 2008 McGuire show, here's photos from several friends:

I am just keeping my fingers crossed that the weather cooperates like it is today- I know stuff will be backlit especially in the PM but hoping I can make some kind of somthin happen, photographically speaking

Hope to see some of you out there! Let's gets some terrific shots of that B-1 posted!!!

One of the worst shows photographically .. by 10:00am the light is in your face relative to the flight-line until sunset :-( You actually want OVERCAST skies with very high clouds for this show. It is also unfortunate that the active RWY is invisible mostly from the airshow crowd position.

However for the B-1, we make exceptions

Yes, they sent two as you described, one for static and one for the show. It was a very good show, I just got home a few minutes ago. They let you into the cockpit of the B-one, while technically not completely inside, you could go up the ladder until the top rung. There were no restrictions on photography, so I snapped a few and will post them tomorrow or soon after. Due to some technical issue, there was no F/A18 Super Hornet display during the regular show today. I say regular show because he did an intense display about 25 minutes after the show had ended - lots of burner!!! He did several high speed passes, the slow pass with his gear down, many loops and it put a nice ending on other than photography related, a really good show. I am happy that I went.

I ended up elsewhere today, and am planning to hit McGuire on Sunday. Can someone tell me what the deal is with bringing bags in? Is a small camera bag OK? Looking at their web site, they say no backpacks or "tote bags" and I don't want to get to the gate and be sent back to the car, or stuff things in my pockets only to find everyone dragging bags along.

I had know problem getting my camera bag in, you should be fine.

I went down with my brother and gave Jason and Dennis ride down(hoped they enjoyed there first airshow) and met up with Manny. The show was ok. B1 was great. F'18s were grounded for the day for some testing, but about 45 minutes after the show had ended if you stayed around F18 did its full demo for the remaining crowd.

Hey Moose,
They didn't give me any grief with regards to my camera bag, which is about 14" wide by 10" deep and about 9" high. By time I got to the gate, they had me open it, saw my camera and a few lenses and said "you're good, enjoy" When we parked, got there are 8:15 and they made us park a good half mile from the entrance, so we had to walk across a big grass field, while others were able to park close to the gate, I guess it was a matter of which entrance you choose, anyway, my point was to say that the guys doing the parking were looking over what people were bringing in, and he told a woman that her pocket book was too large, to keep it in her car. If it's the bag that you had with you when the shuttle came in, that would be fine. They definitely were not letting anyone in with backpacks. I also brought a folding chair with me and no issues, water bottles are also allowed. They also checked you with a metal scanner after you showed them your bags, which was a first at an airshow for me. I've been to shows at other bases and never came across this. My sneaker gave them a false positive and I had to take it off to show them that other than my socks and feet, there was nothing in there.

If you go, as soon as you pass the check point, there is a large hangar, make sure you go inside as there was a surprise in there that I didn't see any mention of....the Predator UAV, which was really cool to see up close.

Joe

One other note, I didn't see the B-52 anywhere. I doubt that I missed it since those wings are so large, but I could have! They didn't list in their paper that they gave out when you walked in showing where all of the statics were.

moose135

Thanks for the info, guys. Joe, the bag I'm bringing is about half the size of the one I had for the shuttle shoot, only bringing part of my stuff, plus some water. The last time they had a show at McG, they sent me through the metal detector about 4 times. Finally, I realized my bluetooth headset was in a lower pocket of my pants. Then, when the guy saw me carrying a camera, he asked if it was all camera gear in my bag, and when I told him it was, he said "That's OK, then, you don't need to open it..."

John, I was REALLY surprised how much more relaxed McGuire was this year with security. They were responsible for me getting my ThinkTankPhoto speed belt with pouches after one year almost getting arrested for arguing with a sergeant that my bag was no more of a threat than the diaper bag for the baby next to me. I had to walk back to my car that year over a mile in each direction and walk in naked as I call it.

This year, they were allowing pretty much anything... I saw really really big camera bags waling in.

Interestingly though, they were asking everyone if they had scanners or radios of any sort (???) never asked why.

Joe,

My enjoyment of the hobby is the combined air display, aircraft AND photos  so for me, the picture is a huge part of it... McGuire usually SUCKS for me photographically... however, they can sometimes put on a great show. Also this year was a nice change of weather from the last few shows which is welcome. It was literally a PERFECT show all around ... great crowd, great performers great wx and NO TRAFFIC!!!

Other than being held captive by the Thunderchickens (you can't move on base while they perform so I couldn't escape early :-( ) I had a great time... it was also nice hanging with Dennis, Jason, Eric and his brother for a little bit. The BONE Cockpit view was also a boner for me. Pun intended

Tim & I were just to the right of the announcers stand. Right before the barriers turned to bring the crowd further from the action.

Great shots, guys! Just got home a little while ago - stayed until they threw us off the ramp at 5pm, then typical Sunday traffic...I spent most of the day with NYCA's "Other Phil". Great show, better weather, a boatload of photos to go through...hard to beat it!

Good seeing you again Moose! I'm really going to try to get through my photos sometime in the next couple of days (and maybe then start catching up on all the rest!). McGuire usually has a good show and this year was no exception, even though it's not great light. The MAGTAF demo was neat; I think I managed a couple of photos with the pyro.

On my way back, there was an accident on the southbound Turnpike; apparently a serious enough one for a state police chopper to land on the highway. It took off headed south right over traffic when I was about 10-15 car lengths away.

Finally finished editing my shots, that lighting was a b*tch so I decided to get creative. Also got myself a tour of the base Command Center thanks to a friend, unfortunately photos were a no-no so I could only get a photo of the plaque on their wall. Very cool nonetheless.

A few lines from Legacy refer to the original, and make you chuckle. the original was too early for its time. The concept (in 1981) is actually pretty cool when you look at how each user has an online (grid) persona .. fast forward to the mid 90's and every user does have an online persona in the form of AOL screen name, or email address.
