View Full Version : A Plane Spotter's Journal - My first book!

Hey guys!
I just started my KickStarter project and am trying to spread the word! I am a 16 year old from Dallas and I am trying to get my first book published! It is filled with pictures of planes from 172s coming out of F46 (Rockwall Municipal Airport) to 747s coming out of KBOS. I have been taking photos for a while and am excited to hopefully get it launched. You can donate any amount of money to my project but the more you donate the better things you get in return! Since this is a site built for aviation enthusiats and plane spotters I think that everyone would find it to be awesome! Any amount of money will help but my goal is $5,000 and if I don't get there then I don't get anything! Please, if you can, donate some money, but I understand if you can't! Help me spread the word if you will! Here is the link - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/894710192/a-plane-spotters-journal.
Thanks,
Logan

So the money you're asking for is so you can fly in a plane and take photos to illustrate a book? Am I getting this correct?

nagol2013
2012-02-06, 07:39 PM
Almost! I already have my photos for the book and it is already built and ready to be printed. They are all taken with a Sony DSLR too. But what I want to do with the money I get from the project is to go flying and do aerial photos.

I am a plane spotter just like you guys but I am living in the Dallas-Fort Worth area!

So your plan is to use the book sales in order to fund future projects like aerial photography?

nagol2013
2012-02-06, 07:56 PM
Yes exactly and go plane spotting! But I won't get any money unless my goal of $5,000 is met! Also you won't be charged any money until March 12th if and only if the goal is met

What is the long-term goal from this?

nagol2013

My ultimate goal to be able to start flying and take more photos to add to my portfolio.

I understand this is a young spotter.........but what the heck, I'm looking to acquire a 500mm lens in order to enhance my spotting hobby as well. Contributions are welcomed as well. I really hope you achieve your goal of $5,000. I have a suggestion........have a yard or garage sale. You'll be surprised what some folks will buy.

nagol2013
2012-02-06, 08:57 PM
I am not asking for all of your money guys. I understand if you don't want to donate. Obviously I am trying to raise money for my hobby but what is the difference between this and a yard-sale? It is not like you don't get anything in return for donations...

Kickstarter is a great site for entrepreneurs but not for what your doing. You don't need $5000 to publish a book. There are so many free ways to do this now.

I don't need the money to publish it. I need it for my next project.

Hi Logan, here is some advise. Find yourself a worthwhile project, not a way to get money for a hobby which is what you're essentially doing. Also, instead of jumping right in here, you should spend a little more time hanging out and learning our ways, our personalities, getting acquainted... what you have done is no more elegant that standing in a street corner dressed in a suit asking for money to buy a suit!

Perhaps you will have a better time asking for donations or investment from your family and very very very close friends, those friends that would not laugh at you when you ask them.

Personally, count me out and I will encourage everyone in my circle to actually not contribute either. Actually, your post was quite insulting to me.
Cheers!

--First of all, it is impolite to barge into a room and start making demands. In any social situation, that is considered impolite.

Nick, you noticed how he was able to do this BECAUSE he was asked to identify himself or herself (apologies for not guessing the gender correctly) Had this been an anonymous forum, where a person had the potential of getting properly flamed, they may have thought twice about it. I like the fact that peopl don;t have a clue who I am or that I don't know who anyone else is in certain situations... it keeps folks guessing and wondering about the consequences if they decide to test my identity. It sure helps me NOT test the identity of someone like "The Hammer" Mark Coleman!

I admire what you are trying to do. In life, your family will always support you and those who do not know you will want to see the return they will get for their investment. People will look at donating to you up against say the Wounded Warrior team where their money would go to people who served this country and are going thru a rough time, they will donate to people who are homeless to get a meal, They will donate to those who are in need. Nobody wants to purchase a book of a few cessna's and 747 as they can go on airliners.net and look thru the best of what aviation photographers have to offer. Today you have to have a niche and even then it is hard to sell a book. I am not saying it can not be done, but saying it is not practical. You need to understand that after years of taking some incredible subject matters, those on this forum have a lot of harsh words for you....DO NOT SHUT DOWN AND LET YOUR ANGER BLIND THESE POSTS.

If you want to succeed in what you are doing

1. Make friends at you local airport
2. Make a book for the airport without thought of profit
3. Love Aviation and all of those around you who love aviation
4. Enjoy your hobby
5. Learn from those around you and keep taking pictures

You will assemble images that touch the imagination of others and make you yearn to dream to hear the next radial engine or thrust vectoring fuel to noise converter you hear...And in the end you probably will never recover the expense that you put into your passion, but you will have satisfied your soul. Dream Big, do not let others squash your dream, But understand what those around you are saying as only this is going to help you to understand what most are thinking. The forum members here all feel the same way you do, we have been where you are now, We understand. Take the emotion out of yourself when you read these posts. There is lots of good info here.

I too take lots of aviation photographs and do not see any profit

With a pretty good lineup of images, it is still hard to make a buck. With 172's and 747's it is even harder. Please understand...Lots a posts are worded strongly, please understand that what you want to do has been tried many times. You are going to need to stand up and do this on your own for yourself in the end. Asking for money will not work and while those whom know you will believe that you are capable of great things. Only you will prove them right or wrong....

So Kid, SHOW US WHAT YOU GOT! Stand up after your smacked down and Keep Standing Up.

Mark,

I think that is a very fair point. Logan, should you decide to read this, stay with the hobby. I am a few weeks shy of being 3 years older than you, and while I started shooting somewhere younger than you are, it didn't become a serious pastime until 2 or so years ago. I cannot echo enough what was said above- love aviation, shoot for no one but yourself, and enjoy yourself doing it. In a short couple of years, I have gone from picking up my first SLR, to between runways at some of the busiest military bases in the country, to magazine stands from Berlin to Tokyo-all on a students budget. Work hard, save up, spend wisely, it is doable. Whether we hear from you again or not, I wish you the best of luck.

Manny you are pretty much spot on- the Internet is like driving in traffic, it has a hell of a tendency to depersonalize people and lead them to do things they wouldn't normally. Those of us that remember a life without the internet and smart phones may be able to keep this in mind more readily. It is sage advice to act as if the people you are chatting up online are sitting all around you.

I learned a lot of things the hard way at 16. We all did. Fred is right, Logan- post what you got

Usually, this type of thread would be deleted for being unauthorized advertising. However, it turned out kinda how I thought... we'd ask to clarify that this was, in fact, what he was doing, a light and unoffensive joke or two, and then more people giving useful, hearty advice.

I was a little surprised that we were being asked to help fund the hobby for someone, which is asking for donations, not like a "yard sale". I wish people would come to me first before they start asking members for money regardless of what it is for.

Looks like this thread evolved, some lulz ensued, and it became more of a help to nagol I feel.

I find myself jaw dropped every week by my friends on this site work and it will only make you a stronger photographer. P.S. New Yorkers are usually a tough crowd... If you post a shot that needs work, we will tell you. In the end, we are all here for the love of aviation and to grow from each other. Many take good photos and we learn lots from each other.

Texas huh? We had better see some B-25 shots from you down the road!

Thunder Chickens! I love it

One Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1985 or 86, I was on Rockaway Beach with my father and brother, when the 'Chickens' did a single flyby of the beach. I'll never forget what it was like seeing them streak by in formation and hearing the noise of their engines, I was left speechless. Before that I had only seen film of them, seeing it live as a kid was incredible even though they weren't doing a show. What a great memory, like getting just a sip of fine whiskey. Ahhhhh.....

The raw power of any jet is enough to stop any child and any of us on the site. I am not saying I would not mind seeing them.... I am just sayin NAVY BABY!!! The Thunderchikens need the arrestor cable for be allowed at KFRG. The Blues get it just to make them feel at home! You never see a F-15 or 16 land ad KFRG unless an emergency or they have to have an arrestor cable streched. F-18's NO PROBLEM!

You haven't used an arrestor cable unless you used one in a landing 737-700. Turkish has applied hooks to the entire fleet for those short field landings....
