Very cool! I remember seeing Aeroflot IL-62s coming into to JFK from time to time back in the '70s, it was always neat to see them flying over.

my favorites were the CSA Ok Jet IL-62s circa 1970's, along with the occasional LOT, Interflug (rare), and Aeroflot (common)

Hi Guys,

Back in 1992, a friend and I went to the Miami area for a week spotting. Apart from all the 62s that used to transit thru Shannon, Aeroflot had two others actually based in Shannon for flights to Miami and Barbados, so needless to say, we flew Aeroflot direct to Miami and back. Got to vist the flight deck mid flight and the crew consisted of Captan, First Officer, Flight engineer, Navigator and Radio officer. It was an interesting experience to say the least.

As a kid living in Long Beach, my favorite time of the day during the summer was the later afternoon playing in the sand with my friends and watching all of the forign metal making the push out of JFK with their wide low sweeping left turns taking them down the coast. One of my favorites was the Air Ukraine IL62. It always made the most smoke and TONS of noise as it swept over our heads and than down the coast. You could see her from her smoke trail till she was well beyond Jones Beach even if you looked close enough. Ah the memories.

I watched the LOT -62's approach the 31's throughout my years in elementary, middle, and high school years. The whine gave it away every time. I was always telling the other kids "look that jet was made in Russia" and the answer was always the same- "So friggin what". Well at least I enjoyed them while it lasted.
