Not really spotting, but on a night mission to get the Eva Air 777. While waiting I was about to get only a couple of other shots.

Eva Air 777 arriving to T1 and waiting for the tug to hook-up, ISO 200, f/8, and 3 sec

Surprised to see Omin Air International 757 sitting at T4, ISO 200, f/8, and 2 sec

Nick.......I like that bird (AeroGal) as well. First time I caught her was basically under the same circumstances (night), but I did catch her once during the day light hours.

Thank you gentlemen! I was hoping to get a clean catch of the Eva Air at gate, but unfortunately this was not the case (maybe next time).

mark, I have to get Eva as well... Already got Virgin and Arik and KLM at the ramp but would like some T1 stuff like Eva... what time does the Eva get to the gate? IS it always on that side of the terminal?

Last night she landed around 8:45pm, and depending on ramp traffic, she was getting to her gate location a tad near 9pm. I almost missed her as I was occupied with the Omin. I saw her off in the background as she was taxing and relocated quickly.

I think aviation night photography is awesome it just adds another dimension to spotting, but at JFK it's no easy task. You have to be in stealth mode. Additonally, not too many birds at the gates as well, so your pickins' are slim.

Good stuff Mark! The Port Authority has hounded me several times in JFK when I wanted to shoot from the top of JetBlue's T5 entrance ramp. Below is a super stealthy shot from the JFK ramp. The folks at Emirates were gracious to give me a tour of the A380 before it pushed back. For this shot, I had to get escorted onto the ramp and they used vehicles to block us from ramp security.

Love the shots Mark! I definitely agree with you about that added dimension that night photography adds to spotting. I have been tempted to try it from JFK my last few trips down, but have never grown a pair big enough to risk getting caught by security.

Steve...........not an easy task, but I was determined and the other part was luck!

MArk, did you set your tripod up in your truck, or outside and stay as low-profile as possible?

Steve...........when the opportunity was available the tripod was placed outside. Shutter cable release was attached, my settings were in the ball park, and the legs on my tripod were partially extended. All I had to do was spread the legs (get your mind out of the gutter), extend the legs, mount the camera to the ballhead, aim, focus, tweak my settings, and press the shutter release cable.

Mark.... you making me miss Singapore ever more! Cuz as Steve says, I am not sure I would really enjoy spotting with the security threat. However the results are just awesome! Love the colors of EVA.
And not to hijack the thread but I was able to get one off couple of years ago when I flew EK 380 to India.
