Here are some taken a short while ago:

The last one was left angled intentionally. After 11 PM they shut off the runway lights and turned them back on for the last shot, the lights going by in the background is a jet than came in for a landing and then passed behind the #6. These were shot through the fence.

Since I always go to AAM every year to avoid the beach crowd, I figured I take Thursday off to watch the practice run at the beach for the first time. Now, I'm thinking I might go to FRG instead. If I do go to the beach on Thursday, is there an ideal location to watch the practice from? Thanks. George

Joe

Show center is even with the water tower. Friday would be a better day to go to the beach for the practice show as several planes are flying in on Thursday and won't make it to the beach until Friday.

Go to show center - the beach/boardwalk in front of the water tower at the Wantagh Parkway.

Which runway will the Blues be using to take off for todays flyover? Which one will they be coming back in on when they return? Thanks

They will use 14/32 - as to which direction they will be going, hard to be sure. In the past, if the winds weren't bad, I've seen them go off on 14 and recover on 32 so as to avoid flying over the residential part of Farmingdale.

I believe they will go up for a flight for observation (possibly) and then come back to the airport. Usually when they land they do a break and circle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-oCNUndNRs

Hello guys and gals. So...this is where everyone ran off to when ASB closed up shop. I was a long time member of ASB and posted photos of the Jones Beach Air Shows and the Rhode Island ANG Air Show. While I was awaiting my membership activation on this site I have been staying abreast of all the postings and great photos. I will be down at the beach on Saturday, maybe even for practice on Friday. I will have my Navy and Blue Angels flags flying high just left of show center as always. Great to back among the air show fans again.

Welcome aboard, Steve! Many of us have been here before ASB started, and will be here long after it closed...hope to catch you during the air show. Stop down to the AAM at some point as well, there's lots to see and do there this weekend too!

Hey all. I'm new to the Forum. Have gone to the airshow the last few years alternating between Jones and the AAM. I'm thinking of taking off Friday and hitting AAM this year for photos with the Beach on Saturday or Sunday. Will have a Nikon D90 Coolpix (no, I'm not a serious photog, but it's better than my usual tote around camera) with me. Any thoughts on where I should set up for photos Friday? I went down to FRG Mother's Day weekend and didn't really like shooting over by the terminal/ 56th fighter group. There were way too many cessnas and such obscuring the view of the runway. My main interest is in getting some shots of the Angels, Snowbirds, and the SuperHornet, although I enjoy shooting the AAM's own fleet.Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Darnit. About how long from launch to Intrepid, if anyone knows?

rkfast
05-23-2012, 09:05 AM
Not long...they may be doing some passes down by the beach or something. This would be the first time they are flying together in almost four days so they probably just want to get in the air together for a bit of time before going over to NYC.

Sorry for the fuzzy info before. I figured that if they were in the aicraft at ten to ten , it would be an early departure. Im assuming the cloud cover has them in a hold.

I'm at the river now. The haze is just starting to burn off. A pair of ospreys flew by. Let's just say the low vis schemes in hazy skies work. I got some photos of what amounted to four different shades of grey. Don't really have time to wait here any more. Sooner or later someone at my firm will wonder where I'm at. I may try to get a photo out a window at work but I think I'm otherwise done for the day.

I'm in Melville and just spent the last 25 minutes outside the office building hoping for a glimpse of the Blues. There's a wide open area to view in the direction of FRG. Alas, I was hoping they'd head northward. But no... it was not to be.

Probably looked like an idiot standing there with a camera in hand but nothing to capture. I guess they went off R-14? From here, I could hear them quite well, but only saw very tiny specs moving rapidly away from FRG. Saw Ernie for just a few seconds before he too, turned away.

Just wasn't lucky today. Or yesterday either...

Yesterday morning, I had stopped by the Terminal before heading to the office to get some static shots of the Blues. Have a small (but useful) Canon Powershot which normally works quite well for me - I'm not a pro (or even close to it). Well... I turned it on and was greeted with a "Memory Card Error!" The thing worked just fine the day before - no idea what was wrong. Took it out - fiddled with it - put it back in. Nothing. Now I'm getting really ticked off.

Finally, I played around with some settings in the camera menus and eventually it took hold. Snapped about 35 shots of anything Blue I could get through the fence. I was happy. Photos taken, mission accomplished. Even checked them on the camera's LCD before leaving. Looked good.

Or so I thought.

Back at the office, I eagerly loaded up my SD card to check what I got. Yeah, the pictures were fine, but they were tiny! Apparently, in my haste to fix the SD card problem, I inadvertently set my image size to "email" (ie: real small).

Oy! Not thrilled about that. Does that ever happen to you guys?

I need a do-over!! When do they return?

TJK

The Angels just flew by my office's are of town (West 50th). You're right, Bones. Never EVER gets old. Had ZERO shot at a photo; gaps in the buildings were too tight to try and get anything in terms of focusing done. Enjoy the rest of the day, folks. NOW I'm officially ready for this weekend!

05-23-2012, 11:10 AM

Mess up a camera setting? No, never... ;-)

They should be back by now - I'm in Syosset, and heard a loud roar through the clouds minutes ago, just before the rain started.

If I remember correctly from 2010(Thunderbirds?), they open the gate behind the terminal to allow the public to access part of the tarmac where the planes are parked. They do have barricades set up so you get a little bit closer to the planes. I believe they were also handing out flyers so you have something for them to sign. One day I need to bring my Franklin Mint Blue Angel and Thunderbird diecast for each team to sign.

Took my three year old out for his first FRG experience today. We sat on the car on New Highway and waited for the Blues to come back from their Hudson River Flyover. He was so excited to hear the jets, watch 7 take off and see Ernie some in for a landing!! We went over to the main terminal and hooked up with my folks to watch 7 come back from his media flight.

No A-10 this year?

Im reading on here about a $10 fee, does that apply to parking by the 56th or just by the museum?

Sorry, no A-10 for the show this year. The ACC stopped all demo teams except the F-22, and there aren't any stragglers attending the show that we know of. The $10 parking fee is for Jones Beach only. Parking around the airport is free. Admission to the museum varies for adult, seniors, veterans, children. A full breakout (and discounted tickets with advanced purchase) is available at the museum's web site, www.americanairpowermuseum.org

Whole lotta nothing happening at FRG right now. Fog, on and off rain...

Snowbirds 1-3 got in last night, but the rest spent the night in central PA and hope to get in this morning. They were going to fly around 10:30 and again later today, but the morning hop is probably history.

Looks like the fog has gotten worse in the past hour, so I don't expect much to happen any time soon. Once things do improve, we still have a gaggle of planes that have to arrive before they can think about practice.

Hopefully weather improves soon.

Ken, post what you're using & the experts on here will give you some great feedback & advice (after airshow week). No worries, I don't think I've ever seen anyone get beaten up for posting things on here & I've certainly given the critics enough to bash LOL! This is a great site to come to to learn how to get better with your shots. Keep posting!

you can drive over to the main terminal. They are positioned to the left of it .. very accessible. Just turn off route 110 at the 56th fighter group sign, and park at the main terminal lot.

I was just by the terminal, they taped off the parking spaces along the fence and there are two vendors set up selling drinks, hot dogs, and Italian sausages. Also to note, there were six soldiers standing around the Blues and several around the Super Hornet as well - something you don't usually see at Republic. As if they were standing guard, not just hanging around.

Could use some advice re FRG. I'm hoping to get by there on Sunday for an hour or so for some shots, and have a Nikon Cool Pix P90 or something like that. Any thoughts on where I should park myself to get some decent shots through the fence? I'm going to go into AAM for a little bit, but I'd like to get some departure/ return shots. I've seen the FRG spotters guide, but I'm not entirely confident the spots and my less than professional level camera will matchup. I've taken photos there from spots a/d (terminal and 56th FG) and was at the final tomcat fly-in near spot b (the Dave and busters mall). I was goingto take a look at spot c (new highway) for the 14/32 departures to try and get the military's launches. Am I wasting my time with that camera going there or do I have a shot to get something decent?

Also, will anyone be over there on Sunday if I have a question or two?

Thanks.
-TJ

I was wondering if anybody here knows the schedule for performances? Usually we have the first AB jet in the middle somewhere with signature team at the end but this time we have F-18s and F-22s!

Unfortunately, the Growlers have been delayed and it sounds like they may have had to land at another airport for now :frown:

Usnow birds 5,6,7 on the ground

Yeah lucked out on these guys. Was over by New Highway when the horse plane :smile:came in then heard Snowbird coming in 1-4. Made it there with time to spare and was pleasantly surprised when
I saw a Flight of 3 in formation coming in. Thought it was only 1!!! About 10 later the last 2 came in!!
Crappy day and disappointed but there was enough action to keep me occupied. The 2 NYSPD B430s took off around 2:30 and headed out to the beach and came back about 30 minutes later. Took a last stop by the Terminal to check out the Blues again as the crowd had lightened. One of the Blues Crew  was standing by the fence signing pics and passing them through the slot in the door then stayed around talking to the people standing there especially the kids, answering all questions patiently. He was giving "life advise" to the kids which I thought was very cool. You know, stay in school, work hard, listen to your parents, eat your veggies!!
Well Sunday I'll be heading to the beach as tomorrow is Eisenhower Park and the USN/USMC demo.
Enjoy all and lets hope this fracking weather lifts!!!!!!
