From what I've been reading (http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/NYPD-Take-Down-Plane-Ray-Kelly-Commissioner-60-Minutes-130576953.html), it seems Kelly was referring to .50 cal rifles they carry on their choppers that can be fired out the side. Much better for shooting rogue cyclists than planes.

not exactly. the .50-cal was always an anti-vehicle weapon in the military and not anti-personnel. if you put that kind of slug into the engine of any airplane that engine will quit. besides, a spit ball would just as effectively take out the gentrified hipster bikers and much more green.

darrel that's not a .50. it's an M240B, 7.62mm.

for some reason I find this very disconcerting that they announced they had this capability

Of course, it might work on a Cessna, but the Agustas and Bells will have problems catching up to a jet.

Just saw this on cbs news' website.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The NYPD (http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/09/27/exclusive-more-than-100-cops-involved-in-nypd-ticket-fixing-probe/) may have to duke it out with the feds over who has more firepower in New York City.
DNAinfo reports (http://www.dnainfo.com/20110928/manhattan/feds-have-real-firepower-manhattan-stinger-missiles) that federal officials have shoulder-launched Stinger missiles in the city. The missiles are capable of flying 11,000 feet in the air at speeds of more than 400 miles per hour and can bring down a hijacked jet.

You're wrong, too. I believe that's a G model. :-p

Just saw this on cbs news' website.

Though the NYPD may have .50's, I have heard a few times over the last decade about their being SEVERAL anti-aircraft batteries on the roofs on buildings around Manhattan, manned by Marines that are literally deployed undercover in apartments just in case it hits the fan. Same goes for a few other US cities.

At first I found it far fetched, but then I heard similar stuff from several people over several years. Not a far stretch.
