Here are some photos from the Rhode Island Airshow this weekend.
I was there Friday and Saturday - the weather was pretty cloudy for the most part, but we did get some decent skies towards the end of Saturday. Rhode Island is always an awesome event and they did another great job this year.

Nice P-3C Orion caught us by surprise

Great work Isaac & Fred. I wish we had bluer skies for Sunday, as the clouds played havoc all afternoon. It did make for some great vapor action though.
I still downloading cards, and due to work, I may not get to post my shots for a day or two...or three.
Steve, it was great meeting you there...Eric & Manny, always a pleasure...and to Fred & especially BigTim who drove that nightmare yesterday, it was a blast!
Now...who's got the cajones to post that first Sherpa picture?

Great day, Great performers, & Great Company.

If anybody has any pics of the Sherpa Demo team, especially when they did the Low Transition, full afterburner takeoff, I'd love to see them!

Amazing shots Eric. The clarity of some of your pics astounds me.

Great shots everyone...I will post my Sherpa bumping the burner in a bit! The Blue Angels were Awesome, they were almost as good as the epic Sherpa demo...but really, that was Jaw dropping.

I was at RI Air Show Saturday. Really nice weather and light in the afternoon.

I had two problems in taking pictures at the air show. First, I forgot to load my 100-400L into my car during the chaos of getting my son into the car. Lucky, I always keep my 70-200 f/4L in the camera bag. But I have to crop some of the photos really heavy. The other problem was we arrived a little late, so I was behind several rows of people. It was very difficult to track aerial performance when all I could see was the back of people's heads. :frown:

Anyhow, here are some of my photos.

Wonderful Pictures here, I love Isaac's F-16 ripping vapor... That was almost as much vapor as we had seen off the twin tails of the Sherpa.

Fred's got more tail in this thread that a toilet seat! NICE!

Eric did not disappoint with his Sherpa back shot...any more from the rear and this thread would be NSFW!!!

It looks like Wavefront Edited that F-16 pretty hard as that was the vapor coming off the Sherpa and he cut out the airframe and put the F-16 in there. (nice set but don't disrespect the Sherpa next time)

John, I BOW TO YOU SIR...Look at those awesome 90 degree angles on the Sherpa shot. If I had to rename the plane I would call it the sexy box b!tch!!! Your picture made the this threat timeless and that plane made every Airforce and Navy pilot wish that they had a plane that just looked half as good as the Sherpa. This plane is so epic that Army change its Slogan for 2012... It is "Army, Sherpa Strong"

Anyway, Here are a few of my shots.... I did not want to ruin this thread with the EPIC Sherpa Shot so here is a link to it
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/i-Q5wvWhJ/0/L/i-Q5wvWhJ-L.jpg

Seen Here after the Sherpa demo, they needed a few Grumman Iron works aircraft to try and keep the crowds attention. I think I heard people snoring as once you have seen
the awesomeness of "Sherpa Strong", everything else seems likes a Piper Cub!
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-24JkQLV/1/L/IMG2225-L.jpg

They had to bump the burner a few times to wake everyone up
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-MPH3TMZ/1/L/IMG1751-L.jpg

Rolling out after the Demo
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-GhJ4Htp/1/L/IMG2854-L.jpg

The Sherpa Dropped a large Marshmallow from 4,000 feet and the F-16 pilot did not miss a beat, seen here hitting it at 210ias as any faster would chance breaking the bubble canopy
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-M6tvzBW/1/L/IMG3912-L.jpg

Still with some Marshmallow hanging on to the inlet and exaust, This pilot must have been honored to be part of a Sherpa Demo
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-kZb9cRm/1/L/IMG3677-L.jpg

Trying to do anything to keep the Crowd, this C-130 crew attached some smoke generators on the end of the prop tips to try to keep the attention of the crowd...the Idea was
that the centripetal force would yank the safety pins out of the the smoke grenades!.... The Army to keep attention, just took a real airplane to the show!
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-8Sp7vRj/1/L/IMG3382-L.jpg

He tried so hard to be bad a$$
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-rgds9SH/1/L/IMG4173-L.jpg

Tucker of course did not disappoint! He showed the Sherpa homage by doing everything in 90 degree angels!
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-hH2gcjw/1/L/IMG4546-L.jpg

After Taxiing out, this P-51 took one look at the Sherpa and just turned around and parked...It was really sad to see the look on the pilots face as he got out of the
aircraft. It reminded me of the old World Wide of Sports intro with the Skier "THE AGONY OF DEFEAT!" Very Sad
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-b6DgFj4/1/L/IMG4408-L.jpg

Can't win the all... especially laying down on the job!
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-QzQ8Mns/1/L/IMG4393-L.jpg

Here Brian Norris is trying to get away from the Runway as quick as possible as John Klatt had the Big Bean Burrito for breakfast and during his low passes his gas would get lit off by the old runway lights.... This is part of the reason they keep pushing those new LED's at all the airports he performs at!
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-LD8p63f/1/L/IMG5127-L.jpg

Realizing that they were way over their heads, the Blue Angels pulled much harder in the Diamond to get some Vapor
as they realized that they needed to do SOMETHING to be noticed at an airshow with a Sherpa
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-bDRR2HQ/1/L/IMG6529-L.jpg
Still, nobody cared that much

Fat Albert took to the sky's, I liked how the announcer said "this C-130 has a real nice back cargo door just like the Sherpa" and
nobody cared as it did not have the twin tails and lacked the elegance of 90 degree angles and a wing straighter then the center
post of my pitched tent while looking at the Sherpa
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-9Nj6x7N/1/L/IMG5860-L.jpg
and NO, I did not go far enough with that statement!

There was an issue with Blue Angel #5 as he had breakfast with Klatt but thank God he was not on the deck when he blew his trouser trumpet
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-28rwBp3/1/L/IMG7631-L.jpg

Seen a few minutes later, Here he is blowing a paint peeling cushion creeper at 6G's, Thank god there was no Micro-burst or they would have needed
another Sherpa to get all people evacuated from the airshow.
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/Rhode-Island-2011-Airshow/i-6dwNbS6/1/L/IMG7837-L.jpg

It was great to get out to the RI ANG Open House again for the first time in probably ten years. What made the day really great was getting to hang out with a great group of guys from NYCA. Fred, Tim, John, and Brian it was great to meet you guys and spend the day shooting with you. Manny, Saturday night was great at Smokey Bones and was good to see you at the show on Sunday. And Eric it was great seeing you there too.

Here are a few shots I have gotten processed so far.....Hope I haven't repeated anything:

Started off the morning with some C-130 prop vapor

You have to love a plane with a door that looks like it belongs on a Battleship!

It doesn't get much sexier than the Sherpa!!!

Since this is a spotting site primarily, let's pay homage: EgyptAir Flt 985 from Cairo (HECA) to JFK (KJFK) tail number SU-GDL flies over NAS Quonset Point (KOQU) ... Boston Center had her at 36,300 feet at this time.

Not on Sunday but did on Saturday... had my long lens on the Full Frame camera so the quality is pretty poor :-( I was also set up for props and forgot to change to Aperture pri etc. Sorry for the poor quality.

Where are yours?

Super hi res image of T-39 Sabreliner. At one point during the show, I was walking around taking environmental shots and got too close to the Sabreliner to cover it in one shot. Not feeling like walking back and having to dodge people getting in front of me, I decided to do a super high res stitched pano... the link below will take you to a Zoomify version which allows you to zoom in and see the details.

Thanks Bill... I did this one handheld and so PTGui PRO for me does a better job than Photoshop 5.0 ... although I hear CS5.5 (Photoshop 5.1) does a superb job of aligning... But ultimately I am so used to the workflow of PTGui I know nothing better :-)

They brought into Photoshop to plug some holes where I did not have image data (love that content aware fill!!!) and output directly to Zoomify which is free with Photoshop...

Cheers!

This shot is soo bad a$$!!!! Notice how the Helicopters are moving out of the way of the awesomeness of the Sherpa? The could not handle the Awesomeness of the Epic wake of the Sherpa! OUTSTANDING!

Manny, I am I stunned and speachlees that you got the HONOR of flying in the Greatest aircraft to ever grace the sky's... It took me a week to gather my thoughts to reply to this as every time I would try to reply I would start to cry in the awe of the incredible opportunity. The only thing more incredible than your shoot was if it had a Sherpa behind it for an air to air with another Sherpa. I just threw away my 7d as I understand that I will never have an opportunity like this. I am honored to have met you SIR

While everyone was stuck gawking at this beauty taxiing past, I was able to tear my lens away just long enough to catch the world premiere flyby of the polished aluminum F22! I can't believe noone else caught it! Flew by quick, sorry for the blur/lack of sharpness...

Dan, While the F-22 was so fast that I did not see it, the only reason why he went so fast past was he did not want to take up the Sherpa's airshow time! I was actually glad they grounded the F-22.... Too bad it was not the Thunderbirds year to be there, The probably would have rather flown down to Mexico to make way for the Sherpa, and we probably would have had a second high speed Sherpa pass!!!

P.S. I hear the real reason the Thunderbirds went to Turkey was because the Blue Angels played a prank on them and told them that the Sherpa would be there for the Jones Beach Airshow!

You guys TOTALLY missed the new research platform SHERPA with the skid jet insert. They simply load it into the cargo bay and BOOM, instant power boost.
