Nick........nice catch on the Nippon.

Decided today to treat myself to a new lens (for my up coming B-day) and purchased a Nikon 300mm f/4 lens. Here are a few shots from the backyard as they were using 13L. These shots were taken with the Nikon D300 + 300mm f/4 lens (except for the Martinair Cargo, which was taken with the D700 + 70-200mm lens). Enjoy

Unfortunately I didn't have good light to test out my new 300mm f/4 lens.

Great shots Mark.

Manny and I hit up Bayswater for the afternoon. Expecting nothing but clouds but the sun made an appearance and turned out to be a good day.

Eric and Mark covered it all so here are a few they may not have gotten as they were taken as I was leaving for home.

Eric, look at the tail... this is what I saw while en-route to Bayswater :-) Now I am convinced it was the CargoLux we saw from below.

OK from here, apologies for the quality... ISO 1250 and from a moving car... all of these were suicide shots on the way out of Kennedy :-)

First time I see Air Europa at all in the air and actually some light left in the sky. If she comes in early enough one night, I may get a great shot at ISO 800 or so!

Mark, on your Cargolux and China Eastern, if you pan down to the Belt Parkway, you can see my car :-) They passed over my head as I sat in traffic. The new toy looks good at this size, what does it look like in real full frame output? I bet it is sharp corner to corner!

Manny, those shots of the Iberia A340 are quite impressive! I love the Air India as well! My bearing seem to be off a little, where were those taken from? If its from a sensitive place shoot me a PM. It looks like Bayswater or HoBe, but I can't tell.

As Eric said, Bayswater !! God I love that place... few places give me as much excitement of all the spots. Something about seeing the airport and such. If only it had grandstands!

... a few minutes later, the same plane went around and tried it again from 22R just for Eric and me...

Manny, you got that right! After having finally been able to got to Bayswater my last time down, I have got to say that it is my favorite, followed closely by the mounds. I can't wait to get my first taste of 13L departures from there!

As far as grandstands go, remind me next time I come down, I'll stop at home depot and load up the back of my truck with lumber and we'll build some bleachers at Bayswater

Great stuff Manny!!! Wish I could have jointed you guys at Bayswater, but I had stuff to do for work while I was playing around with my new toy! I haven't tried it on the full-frame yet (maybe this weekend if the weather cooperates). I need to slap my 1.4 and 1.7 converters to see how it fairs. So far on the DX body under less than desirable conditions I think the 300mm f/4 shined (I just wish it had VR on it).

When I departed this morning from JFK, I noticed that Airbus A320 (correction A318) was still sitting by the old TWA hanger (which I believe they are slowing starting to demolish).

gonzalu
2011-04-11, 03:49 PM
Mark,

You don;t need VR on that lens... it is so light and easy to handhold... above 1/500th sec it is not gonna need VR anyway. Under that, I'd use a monopod... The optics are stellar!

The A320? You mean the special I shot at the end? It is an A318 luxury jet I think. It was listed as a AC/DC Band Tour jet some time back...

And the demolition is for a brand new Spotting Deck for RWY13R/31L for NYCAviation, didn't you know?

Zee71
2011-04-11, 04:51 PM
Yeah.....I kind of figured that no VR is needed, and it is very very lights compared to the 80-400mm lens. I saw that luxury jet out of the corner of my eyes as I was heading to JFK to catch my flight out early this morning. There was no chance in hell me getting a shot of the that considering where it was parked (I might have been able to get it if we were taking off on 13R, but we took off on RWY 22R.

Manny........the spotting deck was supposed to be kept under the wraps until the NYC Aviation logo went up...........now the whole forum knows!!!! :P

VR doesn't do anything for objects that are moving. You are better off with faster lens and bumping up the ISO a litlte and using a monopod. Much better results. You will be happy Mark if we ever see the sun again.

2011-04-11, 05:22 PM

You are absolutly right about the A318 - AC/DC visited Denmark last summer. They played one concert in Horsens I think.

The Royal Danish Airforce was doing airshow same day, so the concert was a no go for me..

Anyway - here is the plane in Billund in Denmark
