I guess I was asleep. I just picked-up a printed JAL timetable (a rarity) and noticed there were no JAL flights at all to South America. If so, this explains why the flight JAL 47/48 which used to come to JFK never comes anymore. Why did they discontinue service to Sao Paulo? Were the flights doing so poorly? The terrible situation now in Japan will probably lead to more cancellations as tourism declines. A sad situation over there. I believe that JAL, which used to be one of Asia's leading airlines, is doing poorly and never ordered an A380 even before the quake/tsunami. I hope this doesn't lead to bankruptcy!

They already declared bankruptcy, a year ago.

JAL shut down its service to South America, via JFK, opting to code-share with American Airlines. The airline declared one of the largest bankruptcies in Japan's history, shed its 747s, shed JALways and is under a government overseen reorganization. Sao Paulo was one of the first major routes axed.
