View Full Version : Eastern DC-7 to FRG March 7!

I'm hearing that the restored Eastern Airlines DC-7 will be arriving at FRG Monday, March 7th between 11am and noon, and hanging out by the American Airpower Museum.

All word of mouth, but with the rarity of this, I think it's worth the chance!

Read more about this DC-7 HERE (http://nycaviation.com/2010/08/a-promise-kept-the-eastern-dc-7b-story/).

Can anyone confirm or add info on this? I hope the weather doesn't affect it.

I'll Bite...yes, it is due in around noon. In for filming but not going into any further details. I knew about it for some time. Rumor is that they were bringing it in for my birthday....but I am not suppose to know so that is why I was quiet.

P.S. It will be Painted as Pan Am for filming on one side...the other will retain the Eastern as pictured above by Phil

I'm disappointed that I got a whisper about this one day prior from a source that shouldn't be my primary means. YOU FOLKS ARE SLACKIN! :-p

I may or may not be able to attend.

Some were aware of this, but had been asked to keep a close hold on the information.

I may or may not be able to attend.
Even if you miss the arrival (and the forecast has been getting better and better, btw) it will be here for an extended visit, you should be able to see it at some point.

No, enough people have heard that it wasn't really covert any longer. Someone was going to talk sooner or later. After all, it's not like you can hide a DC-7 on the ramp...

I'm looking forward to catching this. The Wife is actually encouraging my hobby as she want a picture for a project she's working on. I'm not that familiar with spotting at FRG, where's the best spot to get this one? New Highway? Looks like the winds will be favoring 1 or 32.

Thanks,

Jason

Although I'm working tomorrow...........I do have a few hours I can use. I do plan on coming out there and I'll look for Fred, Moose and Eric. I'm off on Friday as well.....will try making it to Floyd Bennett Field.

Any idea on the departure time for the C-54?

This is all so nostalgic for me. I have flown in a DC 7 and a C 54. My first arrival to the USA was on a Super Connie and I arrived in New York at Floyd Bennet Field on that Connie. I will try to make it to FRG tomorrow.

I have pics, but cannot dump the card until I get home tonight. He did a nice low flyby over Rwy32, then came back around and landed on same.
The timing was perfect, was able to catch it on my lunch break. Finally, a delay worked in my favor.

Eric..........great images........unfortunately I had to pull off the side of the road because I left my scanner attached to my car antenna. Some of these are more on the artistic side (I think). Here are some more images (with more to follow).

Manny.....that first shot posted was taken from the shopping center through the fence. The light was fantastic as the sun set. I am not sure what the air museum is going to do, but I would think they would allow photo's. How far they let you out is another story.

It was great seeing you all today, I wish I was able to let you guys stay out much later but they were trying to close up shop and I had to turn down a dear friend Gueseppie who I would do anything for as they were trying to get the crew out as one of the AAM member had to drive a good 4-5 hours home. I am glad they allowed you guys out on the tarmac as I did not think they were going to do it as the plane arrived so late in the day.

As for all the great shots that were posted.... there is something to be said about a good black an white shot
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/PAAEAL-DC-7-311/IMG601678/1209534434_Uxnav-L.jpg

But this is where I draw the line
http://derf.smugmug.com/Aviation/PAAEAL-DC-7-311/IMG600012/1209534028_2bUBp-L.jpg

What the hell guys??? You can not see the PAN AM BLUE!!!! I would give my left nut to had an 18Megapixel
camera and a time machine!!! You guys want it to look old? It is a DC-7! THIS IS THE WAY IT SHOULD LOOK!

http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/Aviation/PAAEAL-DC-7-311/IMG5787/1209541542_HP364-L.jpg

Juan Trippe would love to see is beloved Blue Ball in technicolor but unfortunately I will need to wait a day or two more!

The Flyby was great but I gave up my position on the other side of the runway that would have been perfectly lit to let
others from the AAM shoot some video. It was important to document the event and even on the backlit side I had my
7D to make up for it. I also would not have been able to take Moose with me in the truck and he is like my lucky
rabbits foot. We always have the greatest adventures!

http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/Aviation/PAAEAL-DC-7-311/IMG53181920/1209538032_4pj54-L.jpg

http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/Aviation/PAAEAL-DC-7-311/IMG5336/1209538664_HmWMk-L.jpg

I am sorry you guys were not able to go in the aircraft but once again, the late arrival and the need for the AAM members
to leave asap was very important. Thank you for not asking the crew for access as requested as they will always try to
accommodate and I did not want to upset AAM staff by having people keep them later. If we disrespect their wishes,
they will not allow ramp access like this to happen on days they are not open.

Sunset on the ramp is a magical time

Fred K,

What time were you out there Tuesday? I was out on the ramp between @1:15 - 1:45 pm. It was eerily quiet....downright tranquil! I was trying out the new Canon Vixia HF S21's 8MP stills. This is my first Canon and I must say I'm impressed with the sensor quality. It was very challenging shooting into the sun to get the Eastern side of it, but the exposure is balanced perfectly. Canon rocks!

I just have some lens flare to deal with (most probably from the UV filter) but the exposure is very nice I think. Maybe I'll post those shots for some here to try and tweak for me, because other than that everyone's probably tired of looking at this beautiful ship already.

I was out there around the same time. It was the first time I ever saw the parking lot between the AAM and Sheltaire empty. And since the AAM moved a few of there jets down the road it looked so empty.

I don't think anyone on here will ever get tired of looking at pictures.

Mario, If I recall correctly it will be there for about 10 days--at least that's what I think Moose said when I spoke to him.

Great to see you guys Sunday by the way.

Got the American Airpower email today announcing the DC7-B. Since you guys work closely with AAM, maybe you can suggest to them to embed a link in the email to the website. I could never understand why they don't.

Looks like the landing was a little steep and shaky (one wheel). Hopefully I can find some time this weekend to make it out there. Nice pics.

...Looks like the landing was a little steep and shaky (one wheel). George

That would nave been due to the winds howling at 18kts gusting to 24kts and they were not coming right down the runway.

Just spent my lunch over at FRG and noticed a lot of activity around this beauty. There were 3 or 4 van / trucks, and the big Sheltair truck (what looked to be a bucket or de-icing truck).

I also noticed that it was not near the AAM, but on the other end of the ramp. Any special reason?

No logo on the tail yet, but some vehicles and stairs in the vicinity. It's parked at an angle, EAL side to the fence, tail toward the Shelt hangar. Like they are trying to keep the PAA markings hidden from the road...

I noticed the horizon in the cockpit shot indicating that the aircraft was leaning to the left.

It was suggested that the photos originally seen in this space might cause an ill-tempered response by a certain short-sighted production company. They have been replaced to avoid any consequences to innocent parties.

did the PAA colors stay on after filming was completed?

Gerard

Approximately...maybe a little earlier, 10am or so, but with old airplanes, they usually set the schedule.

Wheels up around 12:22PM or so. There was talk of flyby while they were prepping but they continued out VFR to the SW. Moose said that maybe with all the time they took warming
up and waiting to depart they decided to nix the flyby. I was in the AAM parking lot then decided to head over to the movie theater parking lot when I heard on my scanner that they would
be using 3-2 to depart. A few others had the same idea. Looked pretty cool as they flew out into the breezy blue skies.

This was expected and planned for, they just did not know how bad it would be. As per the flyby, Charles apologized to me for not doing it as #3 or #4 was running a little rough and it if did not clear they were going to return and turn some wrenches. Charlie is the son of Frank Moss, the owner/Pilot and a true gentleman. It was really nice to meet him and his family. I hope we see them again soon.

Yeah, I also noticed they had a quick stop over at PHF on their way home to OPF and was wondering back then if that stop had already been planned or if they had to stop and check their engines out ??Anyway, I'm glad they made it back home safe to Miami and hope they'll be back to FRG again someday !!

THanks Fred. While they were lined up and waiting Tower kept asking them if they were ready to go and they kept asking for more time. Glad they got home safely. Those old beauties
must need a lot of wrench work.
