Since they were using 13L decided to do some spotting. Just the usual cast of characters. I was hoping to catch Finnair but it got delayed and wouldn't arrive till after sunset.

Some 13L arrivals

Here's another view of the BAW 747, but I cropped the heck of it. Unfortunately heat haze is a killer. The morning light is fantastic when they're using 13L for arrivals.

Great work. I cant wait till one day visiting the Big Apple and coming home with a boatload of similar shots to add to my collection. Just a thought, can a 300mm work in the JFK areas for catching shots or do you need a longer lense? Thanks. Look forward to seeing more from down there.

300mm works for some of the spots around JFK like Costco, the Mounds, Bayswater, and whatever spot that is people are shooting the 13L arrivals from. You'd be doing heavy cropping from other locations such as Howard Beach.

I was happy with 300mm until I saw how much better 500mm was:cool:

mat, I find that at JFK you're typically far from the action. 4R from Bayswater and 22L from The Mounds being welcome exceptions.

Look at the pictures taken by members of this group and notice the absolutely terrific shots some achieve with even a 200mm lens! I am shocked when I see Mark "heeshung" 200mm shots that I have taken as well, standing next to him at 400mm and mine were totally junk!

Also older cameras struggle with focus and exposure more than modern cameras so newer cameras are able to extract more quality images (IMO) than older cameras unless you master the old camera's quirks and limitations and develop ways to get around it.

My very old Nikon D2Xs used to be a very capable camera until I started shooting airliners with it... ugh!! LOL

...and a crop sensor does not magnify the image... 400mm on crop is the same exact image projected on a full frame sensor
