I think I am pulling the trigger.. Canon Loyalty will be about $1100 and right now I am sporting the 40D. Is there any observations on the 7D that I should know?

I was going to do the T2i as it is almost the same camera and wanted a backup. I figured if I did a T2i it would be 18MP an would be my main camera but I do not like the smaller feel of the Rebel series. It cramps my hand after a few hours of "heavy" shooting. I am not happy to spend so much more and get so little more than the T2i.
I do understand the differences but they are not a big deal to me. 3shots per second up against 8, Wireless flash trigger built in and the better sensor on the 7d but almost the same.

Any input, what do you like of dislike with the 7D?

What few Canon people I know say it's great. AF takes a little getting used to as it's radically different but image quality is very good.

Does anyone have experience with it?

Fred, it is all about image quality... and if you need reach and concentrated MP, the 7D delivers the best bang for the buck... 1.6x crop + 18MP is some serious horsepower with 400mm in front of it.

The next best dense sensor is the full frame Sony Alpha in 35mm land and while it does not share the same mount, it is truly amazing you can get 24.x MP for less than $3,000... other than that on a crop sensor, hard to compete with the 7D.

The only flaw it has in my mind which every other camera has is really bad Auto White Balance LOL especially indoors!

Enjoy your new camera! We in Nikon Land still away a pro level mega megapixel camera. D3X is waaaaay too expensive :-(

Honestly the T2i has way exceeded my expectations and I have been very happy with it so far.

Fred, did you look into the 60D also? To be honest, I'm not especially happy with my 7D. The evaluative/center-weighted metering is too inconsistent and random for me, the noise at ISO400 and lower is quite a bit more than I remember with my 40D, and the AF on my first two 7D bodies was screwy (that part seems to be a lot better with my third body, which I purchased about 8 months after the first body I got). From the samples I've seen, the 60D looks like it has less a little less noise than the 7D, plus it's cheaper.

I agree but double the Frames Per Second, Weather sealed, CF instead of SD as I have 2 8GB cards now will save me some money and I like that I can dial in each lens.

I have looked long and hard at the T2i/60D and 7D and now you have to make me justify it all over again? GREAT, another 3 hours of reading reviews and looking at side by sides!!! Real nice Cary! ahahah Any more input guys?

I think the autofocus will make me wait for the 7D.. I keep hearing that it is insane in low light. Higher FPS is also a good selling feature as all the hand held HDRs I do... Still doing more reading but the more I read I feel safer with the 7D.

I thought this was good read

Cary,

I think noise pattern is definitely better on a lesser density sensor, mathematically. No matter what Digic II vs II vs IV you read, physics are plainly visible here. The 18MP sensor on the 7D is one of the highest pixel densities I have ever seen. Removing borders from around the pixels, better microlenses, etc. all sound good and nice, but in the end, the photon collector well is small.

As Fred said, sometimes the compromises can be balanced by the rest of the feature set.

Cary, curious, have you compared at matching sizes or native 100% crops?

I re-sized the originals to 1024px wide and saved straight to JPG. I do notice a slightly noisier image in the 7D (these are the ISO 200 samples btw) but NOT all over... only some areas. It looks like the lighting changed between tests.

Since this forum theme re-sizes images, right click on each and select VIEW IMAGE to see full size version.

Manny - Here's what I used to compare the 60D to 7D noise: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos60D/page19.asp
Sensor is the same size, so it's a fair comparison. My 7D to 40D comparison would just be what I've seen in my pictures. I've never had a problem with getting noise rejections on A.net with ISO 200 shots before, but with the 7D, that became a problem, and I had to use NR in my PP for the first time.

Fred - yeah, you have a point about FPS...really needed that 8 FPS at SXM :)

Derf

Just because at SXM, all the girls drink free that are topless, do you really have to rub it in that there were so many that you really needed 8 shots per second? Geesh!

Yeah, I mean I have SO MANY shots that I unfortunately can't post here or on A.net :frown: I mean...doesn't anyone wonder why I have no shots of the AF A340 or Corsair? They would have gotten rejected for "Topless Chick Clutter"!!

I will throw my input in here as well. I looked into the 7D a while back. I have heard that some have no noise problems while many others report high noise issues at 100 ISO. The 1.6 with 18MP will certainly do it. Many people I spoke with just told me they edit out the noise with noise ninja etc. I always felt though for the money/price, I shouldn't have to worry about that as an issue/time consumer. Any input to the contrary would be much appreciated. The 5D MKII seems like the best right now in terms of image quality, however it breaks the bank and then need you have to be concerned with lens capatability since most here, including me, have the 30, 40, 50, 7 D models.

If you have the 7D what do you think of it?

Why not go for a 5D classic if the 5Dmkii is out of reach?

I find the ISO100 on the 7D, especially with good glass to be good. ISO200 is really iffy for some reason. All the others are fine to me.

I'm sorry if that wasn't typed correct. I don't own the 7D, just meant that most here own Canon bodies with some lenses not compible with the 5D's.

So you have noise at 200 and nothing else? More noise at 200 then 400 and up?

Unless I need to I don't really like using 200 - then again most of the time I break it out I'm in subpar conditions (dark and grey) anyways, so it's already a strike against me...but even in low/moderate light it just doesn't impress me. I almost always need to go back and take out some grain from 200. 400 or higher is generally pretty reliable until you get to 3200. It's capability surprised me 400+ over the 40D, but 200?...the 40D was way better. I'm looking to pick up a 5D now...just debating between saving for the mkii version or picking up a good condition classic.

I think the 5Dmkii is just over $1500 in the loyalty program but it is hit and miss for one of those body's! The guy I talked to today could not believe the 7d was out of stock. He said stock has not been out on that for a while... Go figure!

I think all the cameras in the Canon Loyalty program are refurbs (whether it be just customer returns or ones Canon actually needed to fix). I was thinking about the 5DM2 also, but just couldn't trade a 1.6x crop for a full frame, especially because of the large shooting distances at JFK.

They have been out of stock since Thursday (first time out of stock in a month). On the websites I have researched they say that they replenish stock usually on Tuesday's. I have checked the website for refurbished 7d's every 1/2 hour all day. I guess I will have to wait until tomorrow.

Really like my T2i Fred

The T2i was my choice as it has almost the same image as the 7D. It was originally going to be my backup camera but that ran into problems.

1. If I am shooting anything of importance, I would want the 18mp and not the 10. (that made it the primary camera and not the backup!)
2. if I am shooting anything of importance, I would want the ability of shooting very high ISO if needed and can hand hold night photography if needed (that made it the primary camera and not the backup!)
3. If needbe, the HD video option is nice

Reasons to pick the 7d as a PRIMARY CAMERA

1. The rebel line is too small in my hand and my hand starts cramping after 3 hours of straight shooting (you never realize how bad until you use the 10d/20d/30d/40d/50d or 60d). I had a rebel and it would work great as a backup but not primary.
2. The ability to shoot 8 pictures a second! Great for HDR's and aviation (my camera does 6 shots a second and I can not go back to 3shots per second)
3. I can dial in the len's to make sure each lens is not back focusing or front focusing.
4. Weather sealed
5. it has the same layout like the 40D so swapping between the two is much easier as it is possible to get thrown a little jumping between a rebel and larger with different buttons (like when a shot a recient wedding)
6. NEXT GENERATION FOCUS THAT WORK MUCH BETTER IN LOW LIGHT (most of my shooting is low light)

Yes I can do the job just as well with the t2i but if I am grabbing a camera I do not want to grab the 40d for comfort yet be torn to grab the t2i for function. It was a long hard debate with the t2i/60D/7D but there is only one answer

7D

I can not thank you all enough for your wonderful debate! It just made me realize that without hesitation that I am NOT throwing away money on a better camera for what it says on the name plate but I am purchasing a camera that I will use to it's full potential! I hope it is in stock tomorrow!!!!!

Well, I just got the Camera and I am floored! Of course it will take some time to get used to it but I tried the off camera flash with one of my 2 Sigma EF 500DG Supers and it worked on the first shot and for the first time without me using a preflash like I had to do when I would optically trigger it. I can now shoot with 2 off camera flashes in a room without having to worry about people setting off my flashes! I am very happy!

Here was my one test shot with one of my 2 flashes!
