Yup. AC for me. http://www.atlanticcitynj.com/acairshow.aspx

Ok Guys and Gals, as promised, my frequency list is officially online at: http://www.w2lie.net/airshow

If you don't own a scanner, and would like one for the show, shoot me a message and I can help you pick out out now so you can have it on time for the event.

OR - Listen to my ONLINE SCANNER FEED starting Monday 5/23. I've been able to stream arrivals and photo shoot coordination as well. That is why I start the feed a few days early.

I have some great audio from last year, and I will try and highlight some of that during the week.

Enjoy the show - its always a great time - no matter who performs!

Yes VFA-106 did fly their demo at the JSOH yesterday, will have a few shots later. Hopefully this wasn't just for JSOH and they will come to Jones Beach.

Additionally the F-22 was supposed to due a fly by or two yesterday at JSOH. It was still on the morning schedule and despite being grounded word was that we might get a fly by but it was officially cancelled. Word on the ground there was it is not going up any time soon, so it looks like we will miss out on it.

Not necessarily - Glamorous Gal was used for the HF a few times, don't know who was flying her - it wasn't Chris.

Yeah I know Snort usually flies the HF with Chris' GG, but Snort's busy next weekend
flying down at St. Augustine Airshow with his Team MS760, so that's why I wondering
if Jim Beasley would be flying the HF in his Mustang ? Hope so, because it sure would be
GREAT to have 2 beautiful P-51 Mustangs escorting ALL those Bombers over Jones Beach
Fingers crossed the ACC also sends us the F-4 Demo to replace the F-22 if it's still a no-go !!

Yes that's great, but is there any inclination yet that JB is actually getting the demo? Less than a week to go and the mood around here is pretty somber.

On another note, a week ago Sunday I took part in the CFF walk at Eisenhower Park on behalf of my nephew who is afflicted. It draws a lot of extended family and friends who usually have or will head to the show. All of them just about came up to me and said things to the effect of, "So Pete......no airshow this year huh?" I corrected them but heard "But I heard a lot of people backed out?". If LI'ers in general have this view I don't think it'll be much of a traffic jam this year at least.

I am particularly looking to catch the F-18 demo, but the official website still doesn't list specific display times other than "Airshow, 10AM - 3PM" which I find a bit silly.

Will all the demonstrations be the same for both days, or will half of the displays occur Saturday and half occur Sunday? Will the specific schedule ever be published in advance? (I'd asked a similar question a month or so ago).

TIS

ch2tdriver
2011-05-24, 03:24 PM
I wouldn't hold out for a detailed schedule. I've been to everyone of them and MAYBE 2 or 3 times tops was a sched put out, and then at the last possible minute on the website and then not entirely adhered to. The show always starts promptly at 10, with acro acts then usually followed by the warbirds. Tacdemos and more acro, the skytypers, 106th rescue demo are spread around the time slots. Remember this is a very tight timeline. When we've had a demo team, they take over by 2pm, so all other flying is done and on the ground before 2pm. This year IDK what the closing act will be. So if you need to catch a particular act plan on spending the day (til 3 anyway) at the beach or FRG. Again except for the warbirds which have usually started early in the show. Any yes the show has traditionally been the same BOTH days unless marred by weather.

Also we still don't have anything official on the F-18.

This probably ends my posting of images until after airshow. You may see a picture or two but with hundreds a day to post process, it is not possible as I do not get much sleep from here to the end. If I am posting any more pictures it is probably as it needs to be post processed for special needs. I leave you with this shot I took last night. I wish all a safe Airshow and hope to see all of you as I fly around today in Paul's T-6 for our annual airshow preflight.

Also, while at the airport I was speaking with someone who works for BFCU, he mentioned that there was going to be a Predator at this year's air show and it was staging out of Gabreski Air port. Take it with a grain of salt as he was calling a stealth Predator, so he may not know his aircraft too well. It would nice to see one as I have never seen the Predator or any of the stealth planes other than the Nighthawk 11 years ago in Arkansas, and even that was only a static.

Does anyone just "hang around" the American Airpower Museum on airshow day? I'm just trying to figure out if that is a better idea than going to the beach and having all my shots backlit....are most of the performers based out of KFRG? The Museum is an excellent place to "hang around" during the day. Most of the performers will use 1/19, so you will get great shots of them either departing or landing until at least 1pm before they become too backlit.

John speaks the truth. The AAM is so accommodating that I tend to skip the beach altogether and have my airshow experience there only. The only thing I would advise is to get there early to secure a decent parking spot along New Hwy.

So.

I've been reading this thread, and checking the websites in preparation for hopefully attending the show for the first time. A few questions have arisen.

1) Is it even worth it for me to go to the beachfront? It seems like the displays may be backlit all day, and the crowd could potentially be enormous.
2) Are the static displays outside or inside at FRG? If outside, will guests be allowed air-side? Can you shoot arrivals/departures from there?

Thanks.

Tis, some folks split one day at FRG and the other at the beach. I used to but lighting at the beach is tough as hell. The AAM at FRG is EXTREMELY accommodating, especially during an event like this. For the price of admission, you can tour both the hangar and a generous, fenced off section of the ramp where the warbirds will be parked. The only time they will evacuate you from the ramp is when a plane is either starting up for rollout, or taxiing back after the demo and that just translates to being corralled within the hanger for a few minutes on each instance. The folks there always do a stellar job with the balancing act and if you showed up there, you won't be disappointed.

1. It all depends on what you want from your airshow experience. Do you want to get pics of the Heritage Flights? Do you want pics of the acro acts going thru the motions? Shots of the 106th rescue demo in action over the water? Then yes head to the beach. We don't have a demo team this year so the draw to see the full show is not there. If you are content with just getting shots of single airplanes, then stay at FRG. The warbirds, skytypers and military jets usually make a pass or two before landing.

Also, there is really not a backlight issue at the beach. I've seen a lot worse. Sunrise is 5:30 am so by the time the show starts it is well above and slightly west this time of year. The only real problem we've had some years has been HAZE. An on shore breeze just makes it worse. Also traffic should be down this year without the draw of the team. As with any show if you are a serious fan/photog, get there early and plan to stay an hour after the show to let the traffic thin out. We 3 major roadways out of the park it's never been a serious issue.

2. The AAM Ramp at FRG is a good place to be for the show, but there is not a lot of wiggle room. All aircraft that are to fly for the show are not accessible and outside the crowd barriers or airside if you will. Since the warbirds fly early, it is most likely that FIFI will fly around 9-11 and then land, and be brought inside the crowd barriers to be opened up for tours. I would wager that the B-17 will stay airside and be coming and going for rides. Most of the AAM's fleet will be outside the barriers, but one or two that won't fly will be on display in the hangar or ramp.

For shooting acts in the air, get to the museum early to get a spot at the short crowd line. The ramp is between two hangars so there is not a lot of time to set up your shots. When the fighters make a bananna pass from the south, they suddenly pop up from behind the big hangar, and you have seconds in which to focus and shoot before they disappear behind the AAM hangar. Definately a challenging locale.

Could not have said it better...just please keep in mind as was said before, the later you get there the farther away from the museum you will park.

There is also the option of shooting from the airport perimeter along New Hwy. Only things for that are, with all else parking. It's gonna be a pain in the ass if you're not there early enough. Also, you'd need a ladder or you'd need to be able to stand on top of a truck/suv type of car in order to not have the fence obstructing your view.

The Museum is an excellent place to "hang around" during the day. Most of the performers will use 1/19, so you will get great shots of them either departing or landing until at least 1pm before they become too backlit.

Beach tomorrow, Eisenhower for the Marines Sat, FRG Sun/Mon.
A good place to hang out is in the parking lot by Dave & Busters off Runway 1-9. Most of the aircraft when returning will do a fly-by/low approach and thats a great location for viewing.
Plus it has plenty of parking and room to move around.
I'm not worried about the backlighting as I'm watching more than snapping but I know what you mean.

It was Media Day at the show today - local TV, radio, and print had reporters, cameras, and more at the museum. With the on-again, off-again clouds and fog, we didn't get much flying done. Fifi made a couple of landings then called it day with low ceilings, three A-10s arrived - two demo-team jets, plus their Vice Wing Commander, in to watch the show. The Golden Knights also arrived, and the various civilian aerobatic performers were coming and going all day.

Two frequent visitors to the museum - retired Soviet Colonel Vladimir Edelman and retired US Army Captain Jack Hayne, were once Cold War adversaries. Today they were interviewed by Michelle Charlesworth of WABC-7 News.

I even had a brush with celebrity. Actually, I had been helping to shepherd their interview - it involved both men, Colonel Edelman's wife and granddaughter (who served as his translator) and several different locations at the museum. Michelle was preparing for a ride in Fifi (which never happened) so we took a few shots once she was in a flight suit.

So that's it then? No F-18 Demo? I guess we would have seen them by now, not to mention at the practice.

Still can hold out for the static Prowler though.

Anyone catch any practice or media action?

Outstanding! I was outside and heard it, figured it was a Lear 25.

Caught the A-10 make a pass right over my office at the Huntington Quad. Turned on the scanner to FRG freq and picked up a "VAPOR One-One" lifting off of Massapequa HS and looking for a transition. Is this the V-22 Osprey??

Maybe I should go back outside incase the Hornet makes a low pass?

I'll be at the beach tomorrow...syched now! Both my kids are ASKING to go, even the 3 year old!

I was working in Smithtown when I heard a noise of an acft I've never heard before. Sure enough, not too far over the trees comes a CV-22, much faster than a helicopter. Never seen an Osprey fly before.

So I get to the beach at Lot 6 around 10AM and the blue skies and sun begins to disappear. I hear the sound of an approaching Huey and here comes the State PD Huey followed by one of their 430UTs low level from the East. The landed at the command Center LZ and shutdown. Then by 11AM it was pretty much almost 0/0!!! Actually heard the Golden Knights overhead and someone else but they departed. Had my sweatshirt and hat on and luckily had my book and iPod with me occupy myself. Got a little chilly. At 12:15 I decided to put my stuff in the truck, switch to sneakers and go check the copters. As I approached the Theater area the sun burned off the fog and it turned into a fantastic day!! Heading back I hear Rob Reider get on the PA and explain that Yes we are going to have a practice show though somewhat edited!! Headed down to the shoreline as Sean Tucker started it off. He was followed by the Iron Eagles who were EXCELLENT!! Very impressive.
John Klatt followed then some jet power as the A-10 roared in with a nice set piece. This was followed by I believe Mike Goulian but I was distracted by the Super Hornet circling over the
Bay area. THey came speeding in low and did a great demo including.......BLOWING VAPOR BIG TIME!!!! Oh man just about right in front of me and it was friggin so cool!!! They did a few vapor blasts later but nothing like that one!!!! It was worth waiting for.
Thought that was it but a Flight of 4 Skytypers did a Flyby then Rob Rieider said the Super Hornet would return for an encore with the 2nd pilot aboard and before that David Windmiller flew in and gave us a nice if abbreviated demo. The F-18 returned did a nice flight and that was it. Considering I thought it to be a washout I was very happy indeed with what I saw.
And boy was that sun strong!!! Even with glasses I was squinting.
Headed to FRG after that (traffic was terrible on the Southern State) and got to see a few flybys and around 4:45 the B-29 departed to the north then came back with a high flyover 1-9 then landed 1-4!!!
Nice long day now heading for a hot shower a few cold ones and Bruins/Lighning Game 7!!

I just got back with my student from a lesson from ISP. Tower refused touch n go's so we headed over to Gabreski for them. On the 106th's ramp are 2 F-16's. It appears they are from the South Carolina ANG. I asked tower if they are here for the airshow and he says yes. So we may be in for a surprise tomorrow if that's the case. I know it's not the demo team, but we may get some fly-by's.

I know we have a member here from the 106th, maybe he can provide some more info?

....oh, and for you airline guys a Delta Airbus landed at ISP and taxi'd over to Sheltair. I think they were departing tonight with a sports team charter.

Funny, at the AAM today they mentioned over the loudspeaker that me might get a flyby by a couple of F-16s, but that flyby never happened, so I guess those were the 2 F-16s that went to ISP !!! Let's hope we can get some high speed >>>AFTERBURNER>>> passes from those F-16s to make LOTS of noise down at the Beach !!!! Keep your fingers crossed because it's really shaping up to be a GREAT show !!!

Yeah I thought the fog was going to give us a "No Go"!! But it turned out pretty good. What is the reason for the partition? Protect cars/people from jet/prop wash? Luckily I am tall

Hello, I haven't been out at the base in a few weeks but I remember from the Calverton Air Show they had a SCANG F-16 come by and make some noise. Nothing like a full demo. I live on the north shore and today alone I've been witness to flyby's from a B-17 and one of our own HC-130's. What a treat that B-17 was, sounded like 4 boats out of water... going very slowly.

Hi Guys

So was at the air show today sat may 28th. After seeing Super Hornet demo I wondered why was it flying so far away and so high, with no low altitude high speed pass especially unlike the 2009 Super hornet demo.

Then I read the story about Blue Angels low altitude maneuver on May 22nd (at Lynchburg, VA) and thought maybe that has something to do with it.

Did any of you guys also noticed that F-18 flew much further out and higher than compared to 2009 demo? Heck by comparison A-10 was much closer and often at lower altitude.

This was the subject of a lot of wonder and questioning from plane buffs and casual watchers alike where I was near the centerpoint. Anyone know the story with the Super Bug being so high and far out to sea?

Funny enough, it seemed the first practice demo by the Super Hornet (AD-234) yesterday afternoon (Friday - 5/27) was much closer to the beach than the one (AD-235) that followed later in the afternoon.

Perhaps it just may be an issue of comfort with respect to the two separate Super Bug demo crews?

2 Educated guesses as to why the Super Hornet was high & out a bit.

1) The onshore breeze was really picking up during the Skytypers & you may have noticed that a few of their maneuvers actually went over the crowd which was a No-No. It wasn't intentional, but the wind took them inland. We also saw the A-10 have a few VERY close passes that were also likely a cause of the strong on-shore breeze.

2) I don't think the Blues incident necessarily had anything to do with the 18's demo, it was isolated & the CO who was ultimately responsible has been relieved. That being said, keep in mind the 18 Demo teams have been on the bench for some time now since a Pilot & WSO from the West Coast team were both lost as a result of a crash a short time ago. They have just recently been cleared to fly again & this was in fact one of their first shows back. I would imagine, the rules have been tightened a bit, especially in the conditions they were dealing with today (Wind, Fog, Haze). That coupled with the difficulty associated with doing a demo over water makes for cautious pilots. With all that has recently happened in the airshow world, I'm OK with that.

I loved the show today. Even though there was no Jet Team, it was just an unbelievable collection of Civilian talent & warbirds (along with our friends from the ACC & Navy). I also love how well run this show is every year. Truly first rate from the top down. I'm heading back to the beach tomorrow with the kids, minus the camera. I plan on just sitting back and watching my young kids catch the aviation fever just as I did so many years ago. See you all on the beach!

You may remember that last Fall, I spent a day on the Hudson River, for a promotional shoot with a restored PT Boat on behalf of the AAM. The boat's owner brought it down for the show. Saturday morning, I met him at the dock, along with several museum patrons, for a "ride". We headed out onto the Atlantic off Jones Beach. We stopped across from show center, just outside the airshow safety box. A couple of aerobatic performers did their thing, and then the War Birds showed up - Fifi, B-17 Yankee Lady, as well as the AAM's B-25 Miss Hap, and their P-40, P-47. Chris Baranaskas rounded out the group with his P-51 Glamorous Gal. When they began making their passes along the beach, we were cleared into the box, and made a number of high speed runs along the beach. The boat was bouncing along the waves, throwing up a ton of spray (I got wet, my cameras got wet...) putting on a show for the crowd. What a blast!

A boat on the water could be a good place to watch the show from - although you will be at least a mile, if not more, away from the beach. A boat on the water is a terrible place to shoot the show from. Imagine if you will a small aerobatic plane flitting around the sky, or a P-51 screaming along at 500 feet and 400 knots. Now try to track, focus, and shoot while you are bobbing up and down, up and down, up and down...

What a great time at FRG today. Planes moving in and out like clockwork and great Fly-Bys especially the Hornets, which sent up the back-up today for the Legacy Flight and the A-10. I went over to the rear lot of Atlantic by the Numbers of Runway 1 to watch the Hornet depart for its demo. WOW!! They blasted skyward right at the end of the Runway and boy was that loud. Set off a few car alarms and almost busted my eardrums!! But WTF!!! I saw one of them leave later (Empire 85) but according to the AAMs Facebook page the rest might be here until Tuesday.

Hi, guys!

Had an AMAZING day at FRG with my girlfriend. Started the day just north of the AAM on the perimeter road. The highlights included the A-10 with a couple of fly-bys and the Heritage flight (B-29, B-25, B-17, Mustangs) which did a few as well.

When the sun crossed over the centerline of 19, we went across to the Dave and Busters lot and spent the rest of the day there. Saw the A-10s come by again, saw a B-17 once more. Then the Hornets took off. Hornet 1 came around for a pass and went full-afterburner, no more than 250 feet AGL. It set off every single car alarm in the area, and sent a few dogs running away, tails between their legs. I was deaf with a ringing in my ear for about an hour. Someone down the fence has a decibel meter and measured the first fly-by at 146!!!!!! The two Hornets went and did their shows. The first one came back and did another burner pass (a bit higher this time). Then Hornet 2 came in with an F-4U Corsair and did a slow pass with it. The F4-U broke off for landing and the F-18 did another pass with the gear up but no burners (did a cool corkscrew as it climbed away). Finally came in for landing, and we headed home, half-deaf. I've included some images straight out of camera in another thread I started in Spotting Review.

That is a great shot of Skytyper 2, Mark!

Here are some from Sunday. I spent most of the day camped out in the old control tower with Fred - apparently, there was a disturbance in the Force when I skipped the tower in favor of the PT Boat on Saturday.

Now AAM FB page saying the other Demo Hornet could be leaving between 920 and 10AM on Monday so heads up guys.

Well they were on the money with that. Around 9:50AM as I was walking to see my towns Memorial Day Parade I caught the F-18 just before they disappeared into the clouds.
Still pretty loud as they passed overhead.

As some of you may know, the Airpower Museum also has a significant armored division, including a Sherman tank, M8 Greyhound and M20 armored scout cars, and a British Ferret scout car. On Monday, I rode along on the "Armor Adventure" program - several visitors were joined by a dozen Airborne re-enactors on the Ferret, M8 and M20, all in WWII period uniform. We headed to the wooded area in the southeast part of the airport, known as Breslau Gardens from the community that had been there. Once there, the troops dismounted from the vehicles, and moved down the roads through the woods, as a patrol would have during WWII. To complete the scene, the P-51 and Corsair were making trips around the pattern, so it sounded like 1944 Europe.

My family and I had a great time at the beach on Sunday. What a relaxing day indeed. We got to the booths on the WP at 0915 and there were only 4-5 cars in each lane, wow! I then headed right to field 3 and found it empty and closed off, so we parked in 4. I don't know what happened last year, but this year we made it through the tunnel and security in minutes. Security saw us as a family and just waved us through and didn't search any bags..."your good, come'on.." Last year it took ONE HOUR to get through the tunnel and security, as they searched every bag. I also didn't see any machine gun toting police on the roof like last year, so what was the difference this year?? Was it because no demo team? The fact we got Bin Laden?? We then proceeded to our usual spot west of center (enter the beach at the Oracle tent) for the show. A lot of people but not packed in. We left the beach at 330pm and headed to the lot. NO traffic leaving the lots at all! Just a brief slow down on the WP when the lanes merged.

The show was well executed, the weather cleared beautiful, light winds (no sand blasting of camera or faces) low humidity. I shot HD video and will put some together and post. I did catch the P-51 making vapor which I have never seen before.

It was a good show, but not as good as previous years. There was a definite lack of thunder this year. It sounded like the entire beach erupted with cheers & applause after the F-18's closed the show on Sunday. I overheard Chuck Schumer talking to an event co-ordinator... he promised the Blue Angels for next year. Here's to hoping we can get the Raptor back next year, and I'd love to see the B1-B Lancer again.

At the 2007 show we had the Lancaster(?), F-22, B1-B, Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, A-10, Super Hornets, TWO F-86's, & a KC-135(?). That is the bar that needs to be topped! I don't know how we had the Angels & Birds BOTH at the same show... it was awesome!

I've still yet to see a B-2 in person, would love to see that one make an appearance some day.

When you spend six days running around the show, getting behind the scenes, you see and hear things that the general public doesn't - and maybe shouldn't...

When you leave the marina with one of these, nobody gets in your way!

I think all these shows are running together for you, Bill - we never had all those at one show. The Thunderbirds and Blue Angels haven't performed in the same year at Jones Beach. The T-Birds and Snow Birds did both perform in 2009. In 2007, we did have the T-Birds, a B-1, the Lancaster, A-10 and one F-86. I've been to every show, and I don't remember ever seeing a KC-135 - and that I would remember, for obvious reasons.

Ol' Chuck should have gotten on the phone in the weeks leading up to the show. The tiny (but nice) New Garden PA airshow has the B-2 this year on Saturday only and 3 passes are mentioned! When the TB's made other arrangements I'm sure he could have leaned on somebody.

Moose,

You may be right about Angels & T-Birds, I was going from somebodys photo uploads on a google search for the 2007 show. There were definitely 2 F-86's though: a red bull F-86 & a silver military one. They did a lot more flying at FRG than they did at the beach. OK, so add a KC-135 to my wish-list

PS: Why did the t-birds bail on us this year? 1st time we've not had either a bird or angels demo :frown:

Bill

The Red Bull aircraft was a MiG-17, not an F-86. It's been here a couple of times.

http://www.moose135photography.com/Airplanes/Air-Shows/Jones-Beach-Air-Show-2009/JM20090520RedBullMiG/549766119_LP5UA-L-3.jpg

The Thunderbirds have a European tour scheduled this summer, with their first stop in Turkey. From what I've heard, the Turks moved the date for their show around a few times, finally settling on this coming weekend, June 4/5. The T-Bird support staff/equipment left over the weekend, and the team flies over today. It's the 100th Anniversary of the Turkish Air Force, and since they fly F-16s, and we need to keep them as friends, someone up the chain of command decided to blow off Memorial Day weekend in the states in favor of our European allies.

The Blue Angels were already committed to Millville, but in the end, that didn't come off either.

I've posted my video of the warbird action over the beach. FIFI is sure an impressive sight in the air. Also it's the first time I've seen a P-51 Mustang pulling vapor! (@ 3:50) I liked Chris B. and the Vandy One Team's demo. Looking forward to seeing them again at Geneseo.

I'll compile the rest of my footage featuring the A-10 and F-18 demo's to start.

They need to be cropped tighter Ken, Props are great, pics look sharp, I love the over processed shots, spread them out in the set and do not put them all together and they will get much better reviews.... You NAILED it! WOW! I am only talking about fine tuning your presentation as you got the shot very well! Congrats, a few months with an SLR and you REALLY have arrived! Once again WOW!!!!!

Amazing work Ken! I left a comment on a couple of your frames. I wish I could be more forthcoming on my edits but I haven't yet found much time between work and family events, but here's one more for now... http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5022/5806395065_f88a39b9df_b.jpg

Interesting look at that A-10 - I guess that's what you get for sniffing that LOX container, Kenny!

Kenny, it looks like a Whale or a big friggin shark chewing on a cigar, except it's a robot whale chewing on a Gatling!!! Sweet effect...

Did you say you were too busy with life to actually enjoy the hobby? Welcome to [my] hell!!

So, four months later, I finally finish going through my Jones Beach shots. I spent the entire weekend at Republic; this was the first time I skipped out on the beach entirely.

The rest are at dfalk.smugmug.com (http://dfalk.smugmug.com/Airplanes/Jones-Beach-Air-Show-2011/19355059_FF6pR6#1513041154_TLVMxbr)

My goal is to get Labor Day Weekend shots done by Christmas...

Wow, great shots! I was the AAM one day, I did not see the osprey's and helis... looks like that was really cool! Was it a one day thing, or did I just miss seeing it?

The Osprey and helos were at the Marine demo at Eisenhower Park. Don't know why, with the airshow the same weekend, they can't find their way to FRG, for even a flyover.

Nice work, Dan - I love the shot of Fifi coming over Rt. 110!

In 2010 they were scheduled to do an Insertion Demo at FRG but that was later cancelled for some reason.
