So rare I do this anymore since I'm so used to this, but today around lunch I decided to take my camera into my backyard and see what I could do, even if the lighting wasn't the best. I think with a better lenses, I may not even have to leave the house all that much..

Here are a few from my backyard as flights were departing from JFK on runway 31L.

Those are the kinds of shots I hope to get someday, if I still live here when I upgrade. It's a bit hit and miss, though. Sometimes the heavies come right into a nice position, sometime they come in too close (overhead) or too far.

Hi Mark,

Brilliant, just hook up an SBS-1 er & your laughing, best part no hassels with the security & Police agencies. One better crank up the BBQ invite a few mates over, few beers....perfect!

Excellent photos. It's funny, that when real estate agents try to sell a home, they never tell folks that aircraft pass near-by but us guys would welcome it. I once arranged a trip to LAX to plane-spot. I stayed in my room at the LAX Holiday Inn only 1 night because the runway I was facing only had domestic flights. I had my room changed on the second night and immediately saw SIA, QFA, KLM, BA, AF, LH, and much more from the window. I had a blast. I saw aircraft that never come to JFK (Philippines, Hawaiian Air, etc). I forgot if it was Rwys 24 or 25 that had the international flights. The hotel clerk thought I was a "nut case" for changing rooms just to see planes and nowadays they would get suspicious. This happened in 1983.

That's kind of what happened for us. The aircraft only come over when the 8's are in use, which is maybe 1/2 the time. When we were buying the house, I mentioned seeing some aircraft now and then, and my dad was like 'no, we're too far away to see anything'. Once we moved in, we quickly found out we were in the approach path, and during peak times you will hear jets and see them well enough to be able to tell the operator every 30 seconds. Not that it's a bother, airliners are so quiet you don't really notice them unless you want to. But it provides a nice show when you're sitting outside at the right time. Especially the heavies which seem to always make the 180 back to IAH in perfect view!
