View Full Version : Hurricane Earl

2010-08-30, 04:11 PM
Currently category 3, 125mph sustained winds, moving WNW at 15mph, pressure 955mb. To touch US coast midday Thursday near North Carolina.

St. Thomas (TIST) is currently closed.

This hurricane's projected path is very similar to that of 1985's Hurricane Gloria, which beat up the Carolinas and Long Island quite a bit... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Gloria

That's the DC-8 that is currently stationed at FLL for hurricane information flights. What you won't see is the two Global Hawk drones that are stationed out of Homestead that are also being used for hurricane information flights - wish I could get them!!!

Don't they file flight plans for the drones also?

I'm sure they do, but it depends on who owns them - if they are military, they won't show.

I remember when Gloria hit - I was a recent arrival at Grissom AFB in Indiana, and we had a gaggle of F-15s out of Langley spend a few days keeping away from the storm.

Speaking of keeping away I see the DirectTV blimp is at FRG. I gather for the US Open. If this storm does head this way how long will they wait before they head for the hills?
Or are there any hangars around here to accomodate a blimp?

I am hoping that this thing misses us totally, however if it does hit us, I am hoping for nothing worse then those 2 nor easters we had back in march .. Also, everything should be gone by Saturday morning, so we may still have 3 good days of flying.

Unless Sheltair dumps their hangar, I doubt anyone on the field can hold the blimp. I'm no blimp expert, but I would think if the forecast on Thursday afternoon is holding steady, they will bug out then.

However, I'm among thost that hopes that Earl stays far enough off shore to not be a bother.

I was living in Brentwood when Gloria ripped thru and we had the eye go right thru our block. It was incredible to see how many trees were lost. There were more lost than were left standing and the town had to bring in the huge trucks and pick up all the trees that were cut up in very large dump trucks. They say there was a mini tornado in the eye as the speeds of the impacts were well over hurricane force. I do not remember any houses leveled but there were some with big pieces missing. It was really bad.

here is a small clip from the home movie. My father had the camera off when it was as bad as it got as he was trying to keep the house full of people calm. We had friends from East Islip over as they were 1 block from the water and were evacuated.

They say there was a mini tornado in the eye as the speeds of the impacts were well over hurricane force. ]

When in the eye of a hurricane there is hardly any wind at all, in fact as I recall the sun came out for a few minutes when gloria's eye came over.

Derf
2010-08-31, 10:19 PM
Yes, but the winds are the worst on the eye wall.... and that also has the potential to spin off a mini tornado (Very rare from what I understand).... There have been eye's so big that people think the storm is over for 15 minutes to a half hour.... they can be deadly wrong. The Eye usually is not that big and as it hits landfall the eye will not have that kind of structure. With Gloria, it got nice and then the tree that was on the wires in this video quickly went the other way and took out the tree on the right side. The eye is most dangerous becuase if it passes directly over it will revers winds and any trees that are weekend will be pushed the opposite way.

Thats not good. Why do I get the feeling this storm will be the one they have been perdicting to hit us for years? That thing is huge. Reminds me of Hurricane Kartina. Come on cold front. Move this thing out east. Currently a Cat 4 storm with 135MPH winds.

Looks like the 11pm advisory has moved the track to the east. Only far eastern LI is within the cone now, whereas it covered the entire island including NYC for the past day.

Given that all the models except one seem to agree it will stay east of LI, I tend to think we'll probably miss this one.

Its still tenative. Lets wait a day before putting 100% into a way here. I'm hoping it goes with the secondary models and stays out completely. But I still have an uneasy feeling were going to be hit by this monster.

7PM back to Cat 4 Storm again with winds up to 135 MPH. Even if we dont get a direct hit this storm is so big the whole area will probably get some type of wind and rain. But the bright side is cooler temps for the rest of the weekend with Sun/Mon looking pretty VFR.
Right now we are under a Tropical Storm Watch and up and down the coast airlines and Amtrak are adjusting schedules.

11PM still a cat 4 storm and has strenghtened. 140MPH winds moving at 18MPH NNW. The eye has reformed and its a strong eye. Which means its in a favorable area to strenghten. Also the eye is HUGE like Katrina had and we all know how that ended up. This is highly resembling Katrina is size form and eye development. The one thing that it doesnt thankfully is that it hasnt raeched Cat 5. Models are showing it more to the east now. Another good sign

Latest NOAA track shows the Tropical Storm warning for LI and surrounding areas. According to this, winds will be between 74 and 110mph when it's around that area - a Cat 1 or Cat 2 storm. Seems funny for us here in Florida to look up the coast and yell....DUCK!!!!!

Totally agree on this one especially for Nassau and the City. We've had worse Nor'easters recently and there was a Thunderstorm about a month ago that came through that scared the crap out of me with its wind and rain. Dont blame when I actually check its stronger then before. And if you look I have posted a few images the last few days showing the 11PM update. Thats where I get my info from. and some good news with this 11PM update. Cat 2 hurricane with 105MPH winds moving NNE at 18MPH. Weakening system which is good. Cedar Beach, with Earl some 250 miles to the south.

It was mostly overcast, with on-and-off light showers. Every now and then, we got a heavier shower, but most passed quickly. After a couple of hours of roaming the south shore, I headed for higher ground...

I guess this storm was really hyped but didn't do much damage as far as I know. Great shots though moose!

We had sun in Manhattan most of the morning then just cloudy. Not a drop of rain. No winds. Just got home (eastern Nassau) and still no rain, breezy, humid as hell.

Very strange...from what I've heard out east and in CT, even the heavier-looking squalls on radar are not dropping much rain.

A little breezy here in Manhattan, but just some random spritzes falling out of the sky...literally just a few drops at at time.

It was a total wash. Not a drop of percip fell in Long Beach and peak winds were about 15 Kts. The only real indication of anything different from normal was the amazing surf which nearly swallowed most lifeguard towers. Waves were running average 10 feet most of the day and growing to 15 and change during high tide. It was not that choppy confused crap March's Nore'Easter brough either. These were beautiful rolling sets. I got my stick out and took a few rides as high tide approached but it was a touch above my comfort level when they started peaking out. I did take about an hour and a half worth of amazing pics of the surf and others dropping into the slot though. Debating posting them later.

Dud of a storm. No rain in Nassau or JFK. Thought it would be much worse.

I work in Westerly RI so I headed out to Watch Hill around 3:30 in the afternoon to shoot some pics of the surf. Here is my favorite pic from the afternoon. I headed back to my truck just in time as the sky opened up the rain came down.

At least you only got 12". We've got that on the ground already here and its still coming down pretty heavily. Prediction as of this morning is 12-24" before storm is done.
