Is there an Olive Drab B-25 flying out of FRG this weekend? I was flying with my student in the south practice area today, exactly south of the RM Lighthouse when I saw an OD B-25 flying along the beach eastbound at 2000'. We were 500' above it and less than a half mile away. It had an emblem on the tail. I'm familiar with the AAM B-25 and it was definately not Miss Hap.
I wish I had a camera as I had a perfect view of it with the lighthouse in the background. It would have been an awesome shot!
Turns out it was the Reading PA based MAAM's "Briefing Time". They were down at Millville NJ for a fly-in and were enroute to RI for a flyover of the SS John Brown. The Brown is a WW2 Liberty ship that does nostalgia cruises and features warbird fly-by's occasionaly. They returned to MIV around 3pm I'm told.
What a sight!

FYI- Figthing Falcon just let me know that a P-3 Orion is flying around FRG right now.
Not sure if it is staying long at FRG so if anyone finds out more info please let us know.

Talon has been known to throw special events in their hangar at least once a year, so it wouldn't surprise me.

And the NHL season started with Dallas in town to play the Isles tonite so we should expect to see a charter in for them. Wonder if they will leave tonite or bunk over since the
Stars dont have another game until Thursday at home.

Family Day isnt until Nov 13th. I dont think the E-2 is specifically for that. I know every few years they will bring in an E-2 to allowe the newer employees to see (and even walk in/around) the plane to see what they work on.

BTW, do you know if it will still be back on Friday again ??

It appears to be a WW II M3 Scout Car, but I don't have all the details yet. I stopped in the museum a couple of hours later, and it wasn't around and no one seemed to know anything about it. Turns out it is a new addition, but they don't have space to store it over the winter, so it is "elsewhere" for now, but expect to see this added to the museum's "armored division" before long.

There was a HC-130 from the 106th practicing touch & go's at Islip today as well. I see them all the time out here (Coram) as we're on the Calverton approach.
I was at the fire department when the Suffolk Mobile Command center rolled for a reported plane crash in Flanders. It was first reported as a 4 seat aircraft, then a 4 engine, then a possible C-130. As it turns out, apparently it was a 130 that had trouble but landed without incident. The Command Center came back 20 minutes after they left. Disaster averted!

Also, there was a surprise visit by a Tuskegee Airman. Raymond Cassagnol is visiting New York from his Florida home, and visited the museum this afternoon. Mr. Cassagnol, a native of Haiti, joined the Haitian military during the Second World War. He was one of three Haitians sent to Tuskegee in 1943 to be trained as pilots. Following his training, he returned to Haiti, where he served as an instructor pilot and flew anti-submarine patrols over the Atlantic Ocean. Mr. Cassagnol, now 90, was in the same training class with Daniel "Chappie" James Jr. and Lee Archer, and roomed with Archer during training.

Nice shots Moose, I had wondered what happened to 698SS after the Rangers/Stars replaced her with the 757. Feel a little attached as I flew on her last 2 rev flights at AA where she spent most of her career as N864AA, the last of those 2 flights was AA's last 727 rev flight back in 2002 !

Montreal flew into FRG just as the snow started on the 26th. Atlantic's ramp was kaos at the time, and they were towed into their parking spot. Which, unlike a normal arrival, was parked tail first to the gate. The tow operator really did a great job as he had to angle it in between a G4 on the left wing and a Citation on his right wing. They had three wingmen walking it in, but slow and steady and it was a safe arrival.

So I woke up at 3AM and being the elderly guy I am I headed to the bathroom. That was when I heard a sound outside and peeked out to see a helicopter cruising past to the NW at around
700 feet or so. Couldnt make it out but along with the usual anti-collision stobes it had a red pulse light on top and bottom. Delayed my "business" and put on my scanner and heard nothing about the copter but did hear a Lear jet (N5PT) inbound to FRG for Runway 3-2. Some real early morning activity.

Had some time to kill before going to my brothers so hung out at FRG for about an hour. Damn there is lots of snow there!! Using 1-9 and I parked by the Terminal for awhile. Usual traffic, touch and goes. Helicopter N1767 (R44 Raven) came in landed Atlantic, left to the shoreline and said they were returning soon. Was just about to head on the Southern State when I heard that a Boeing 737 was in the area at 4000 feet preparing to come in. It was the Buffalo hockey charter coming in so I set up by the movie theater off 110. Miami Air "Biscayne 3-2" came in soon after and looked very cool appearing in the distance in the cloudy sky, lights blazing.
And speaking of snow cant the crews at Atlantic find a better place to pile up the snow!! Cant see nuthin from the fence lines!!:smile::wink:

On February 9th, 2011, an Alitalia Boeing 767-300, registration EI-DDW performing flight AZ643 from EWR to FCO, was climbing out of EWR when the crew reported main gear trouble.
The crew intended to divert to JFK but seeked visual confirmation from the ground that the main gear was in fact down. The jet overflew Republic airport at 1600 feet and received positive feedback, then went on to perform a missed approach at JFK's runway 22R for a final visual report from the tower. It then landed at JFK's runway 22R.
Air traffic control recordings (source: liveatc.net) are of conversations with New York Approach (ROBER sector), New York Final Approach, JFK Tower and New York Departure.

I was there about an hour before you, Joe. I hadn't seen the MD in these colors before, but there is an Air Canada A320 with similar markings that has been into FRG once or twice on hockey charters. I think I've shot it, but can't find the photos right now.

I didn't have a tripod on me and wanted to catch it prior to it's leaving, being so close to the airport, I heard it take off about 15 minutes later. These larger planes have a distinct sound to them over the normal jets that take off from Republic.

What lens did you get Fred?
I got the Tamron 70-300 DI VC USD lens... this lens is WAY underpriced!!!
This morning I took about 50 shots of this bird coming in with my thumb nailed on the auto focus and every shot was this sharp. I was at
250th of a second and the VC (IS) is awesome. I would expect with my 40D and old Tammy 70-300 without stabilization to get about
1 of 8 shots soft or a little blurred with 250th of a second. I had NOT ONE SOFT IMAGE! This lens is GREAT! I can not wait for airshow!!!!
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/Aviation/New-KFRG-shots/IMG4541/1206411735_TMqhF-L.jpg
Thanks for the reply Fred, that looks very sharp for a $400.00 lens. I was looking into the Canon 70-200 f4 or 2.8 and generally shy away from Tamron since I had a 200 - 400 lens and it was very soft. For 1/3 or less the price of the Canon's with more range, it may be a no brainer, although I usually rent the Canon 100 - 400 for the airshows.
Thanks,
Joe

Look over to see one of Cablevisions S-76s roaring in from the south at about 500 feet!! Right over the station they do a hard banking turn and line up to head into the Bethpage pad. Gotta tell you it looked pretty cool and it was LOUD. People were actually lowering their umbrellas to check it out!!

The landing pad Gerard linked to is in Woodbury, south of Jericho Turnpike, at the Cablevision complex. Bethpage has a Cablevision complex with a listed helipad (http://www.airnav.com/airport/6JY8) as well. Given it is a published helipad, and they aren't just dropping in onto the front lawn of the building, I suspect they aren't fined for landing there.
The Nassau County Police also have a helipad (http://www.airnav.com/airport/8NY9) nearby in Bethpage, but it is not generally open to public use.

WOW! What a nice surprise today. OO-JAA, a Sun Country/TuiFly 737-800 Hybrid just came to Atlantic's main ramp. From the flight plan, it appears that they are here to take the St. John's men's basketball team out to Denver for the NCAA tourney. Pics tonight.

Great catch on the French Falcon Moose! I'm going to start a rumor that the reason they are here is to plan on the arrival of the French Aerobatic team for the Jones Beach Airshow!
Hey not the first time. In June of 1986 they flew over in formation at the very end of my Northport HS graduation ceremony on the way to FRG. Luckily my celebratory dinner was at the 56th, so I got to see the Alpha Jets all lined up on the ops ramp. Ah memories.............

After running a few errands, I drove past again, around 4pm, and saw a DAL A319 holding on Rwy 1/19. Once traffic cleared, he back-taxied and departed Rwy 32, headed to MDW. He had arrived just after 3pm from PHL. Based on the schedule, it looks like he was bringing the Flyers in for their Saturday game with the Islanders.

Stopped by Republic this afternoon. Great to me Big Tim and John K in person. NYPD aviation had a ship at the main terminal. Pilots came out and fired her up for take off but held her just off the runway below the fence line until she was behind the terminal blocking our view and dissapointing the three of us standing there with our cameras. Also a little while later "Miss Hap" took off.

Yup caught them up and down off of "One-Nine" about 3X while there.

Yup. Saw one last Sept while over by East 96st in Manhattan and also thought at first it was a CH-53. From a distance it does have that look.

In my kitchen chowing down some pizza with my wife around 6PM and I hear something roar over my house. Ran onto my deck and saw it was the B-24 on a left bank onto Runway One Four. Came by two more times and looked pretty cool. Love the sound of that old engine kicking and sputtering and spitting. LOLOL!!

Something was being filmed by the new Talon hangar. They were using the hangar and a G-IV on the tarmac.
And a Sirrus SR20, N184PD, landed on Runway One Four apparently telling Tower they had "issues" so Rescue 4 came out and watched them land then followed them as
they taxied back to Atlantic.
The A-10 was a treat. Here are a few pics...many more on my website as usual
