Thats the one. I was actually driving past with no intentions of stopping as I had my daughters soccer game to get
to. When I saw that awesome copter I friggin stopped short and made a wild turn into the parking lot. Thankfully
no one was behind me. The crew was prepping to leave (11AM) but being the good dad I only stopped to take a few
pics then left for the game. :( I wanted to wait but knowing how long these military guys sometimes take to spool
up I decided to leave.

The Super Bugs produce quite a racket. They are actually louder than the Tomcat they replaced. Navy has had a tough time in Oceana & Key West with them and the JSF is going to be almost twice as loud! http://www.stoptheplanes.com/

I have no problem with the noise either - I kind of like it. What is that organization's plan for dealing with Oceana and Key west (except for the law suit I saw referenced)?
I remember when the f-22 appeared at the airshow at Jones Beach a few years ago- man was that loud....

They can actually carry up to 5 pods. The EA-6B also carries multiple pods - they can be used to jam different frequency ranges.

John,
Wow I assumed by now they would have had enough tech to utilize one ECM pod to cover all the frequency ranges instead of three using up other hard points.
Either way what an amazing aircraft the EA-6B Prowler is. I had a chance to shoot a line of active A-6 Intruders (EA-6B predecessor) in 1995 but I because I ran out of film right when I got to them.

I don't know if he stopped by FRG or not but I saw Chuck Aaron (Red Bull Heli) leaving NY today in the Red Bull Helicopter.
Where was that?
I saw the chopper flying from my house in Copiague.

Ahhhhhh!! I say that cos I actually heard him working FRG tower while I was down by Atlantic at FRG.
I heard a copter using the call sign "4EH" and I knew it sounded familiar. From what I gather he wanted to fly
east along the south shore but i dont think the visibilty was that great (fog?) so he worked with FRG and flew a
NE heading instead. This was around 2:30 or so.
Wonder if he was in town the whole week after the Red Bull race on Sunday.
Im telling you nothing gets by us (this board)!!!!

It's funny you say that because when I was watching him fly over he made a left and circled over the house and changed his course this must have been when he was working with the tower. He must have been in NY since the Jones Beach Airshow so he must be happy to be coming home.
Also there was some action at FRG today with the Direct TV blimp.

Well, he did perform up at the Rhode Island Air Show this weekend; on Saturday he flew around 11:30, but I'm not sure when he flew on Sunday. Probably around the same time.

Quite the oppostite. Since Jones Beach, he's been up to Windsor Canada, Indy, then back to Linden for the RBAR, then Rhode Island. His last month has been crazy!
It would be cool to see him stop by for the night but sounds like he's already bugged out.

Not sure if this is the right thread - but we shot the Direct TV airship from the air over NYC while doing a photo mission a few months back. They were moored over in KCDW, so this explains why we haven't seen them in a while.

Ran some errands and decided to do a quick run by FRG. This was about 1:00 and when I was on 110 the
skies OPENED and I mean OPENED!!! Not surprising with the thickness of the humidity and the dark and
nasty clouds moving in. Of course this didnt stop Stingray 651 from departing off Runway 1-4.
Wild weather but typical when a cold front moves in pushing out a heat wave!!

XB-RRC is sitting on Sheltair's ramp.
Sorry gang, I've been a bit busy at work and have shirked my reporting duties.
Along with XB-RRC, here are two other rare visitors to Farmingdale this past week.
First off: XB-RRC - Gulfstream - G2SP

If it is these specific planes, what makes them so special? Thanks.

We see these types of planes all the time at FRG, the rare parts are:
1) Mexican registered bizjets are few and far between in this neck of the woods.
2) Venezuelan registered bizjets are even in here even less. (there are only about 125 bizjets according to LAAS Corporate Jet register) http://www.laasdata.com/corpjet/
3) The FAA King Air (and the rest of it's fleet) ae constantly hopping around the country. Checking airport infrastructure, approaches, etc. If you see it at the same airport more than 3-4 times a year that's a lot.

Then it's a good thing they didn't show Gerard...if the 'bugs' had shown they would have landed on 14/32. US F-18's are not allowed to land on 1/19, it's too short.

Ah good to know in the future. But I was somewhat prepared for that. Had my scannner with earpiece on and was sitting next to my truck. Probably would have had time to "race"
down to the other side if they came in 14. Interesting that the CF-18s used 19 during the Air Show.
Oh Come on.... when I said big I was not talking about adding one more aircraft.... Spitfire and all is cool, two is great... I tho am hard to please and I am really excited!

Phantom II's had a gun right? or was it still that center pod crap?
All the F-4s were called the Phantom II - the original "Phantom" name was used on an earlier McDonnell fighter, the McDonnell F1H, the Navy's first operational jet.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/FH-1s_NAN11-49.jpg
The F-4E has the internal gun - they were used by the USAF, as well as a number of foreign air forces, including Israel, Iran, and Japan among others. The F-4F, a variant of the E-model used by [West] Germany, also has an internal gun. The earlier USAF F-4s, the C and D models, which were also used by Spain and South Korea, did not have an internal gun. The US Navy/Marines never flew a model with an internal gun, flying B, J, N and S models. The British (RAF and RN) also flew Phantoms without an internal gun. Of course, the RF-4 recon versions, and F-4G Wild Weasel also came without an internal gun.

The DQ helo has been there about 3 weeks now. I know one of the pilots and he has been doing pilot training for a few weeks with it now. I haven't gotten a close up look at it yet, but will soon.
As for the building outside Atlantic, that just showed up today. Not sure what it's for...yet.
I have many pics of her and she is beautyful! I have been in and round it and all that glass in the cockpit is AWESOME! Back looks a little boxy. Lots of cameras on it...Nose, Tail and I think one or two more. Very cool stuff!!!!
I would love to post a pic of her that I took with 2 off camera flashes but it is in the hangar and I do not want to upset anyone. I have a bunch from outside but nothing worth posting.
Here is another one from the same day....VERY SAD to see this with the same stickers!

Did a swing by after the beach and still there at 4PM. FRG was pretty busy around 3-4, lots of jets in and out. In fact at one point Tower stopped allowing
touch and goes for awhile. And a Flight of 2 Cablevision S76s came in from the SW.

Is the T-45 still there? And if so any details on departure. Thanks!
Yes, it is suppose to be there for a few more days... I would imagine that it is leaving on Sun or Monday but did not ask as I am leaving for PA early in the morning for a few days. Sorry

Any updates on the AAM and Labor Day weekend? Is the numbers of Brit aircraft set at the Lanc and 2 Spits?
Also I know a lot of folks are interested in a schedule of the flying, and wondering if the Lanc and Spits are going to fly or just be on static display.
There will be Ceremonies Friday so arrivals will be before then. Saturday should be the big flying day with lots of C-47 D-day trips... I am told that most aircraft will be flying. Not sure on schedules and I am sure any plans will change on this. Not sure about Sunday but I am sure stuff will be flying then too. I would think Sat is the day to be there.
Update... There will be formation flights on Friday with the 2 spits and Lancaster as well as some Museum aircraft in the formation for a second flyby. The only thing I can confirm flying Sat is the C-47. I am sure more aircraft will fly Sat but the real day to be there will be Friday. I am changing my above statement to say FRIDAY is the day you want to be there if you can only go one day.

70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain to be observed on LI with
RAF Spitfires and a four engine Lancaster flying at the
American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport
Calling all Long Islanders whose families survived the Blitz
All Labor Day weekend, the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, when Nazi and British fighters fought over the future of freedom, two rare RAF Spitfires and a heavy four engine Lancaster bomber will take to the air over the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport to mark ceremonies that will include remarks by British Acting Consul-General Dominic Meiklejohn and welcoming British expats who are now proud Long Islanders remembering the deadly Blitz by Nazi bombers during World War II.
Following their salute flight, the RAF aircraft will be joined by American fighters that were later flown by British pilots and, together, helped turn the tide of war in Europe and the Pacific.
“The significance of this anniversary is simple for every American. Seventy years ago this summer, our very civilization stood on the edge of a horrible abyss. If Britain had fallen to the Nazis, it would have been virtually impossible for the United States to land on occupied European soil and roll back the Third Reich,” explained American Airpower Museum president Jeff Clyman. “It was the Spitfire, and its stable mate, the Hurricane, that rose to the defense of London and thereby saved humanity from the Nazis. We need to understand our history and heed those lessons today.”
Museum Vice President Jim Vocell said, “We are looking to welcome the families of British expats now living on Long Island who experienced the Battle of Britain as soldiers, airmen or sailors. In addition, we are looking for firsthand accounts from those who were in Britain as children, then immigrated here to the States. These are all valuable oral histories that become part of the fabric of fighting for freedom.”
Hensley Murray, a longtime volunteer at the American Airpower Museum, was a child in Glasgow, Scotland whose industrial area, Clydebank, took a terrible pounding from Luftwaffe bombers because of its role as an industrial center. Some 12,000 homes were destroyed or damaged and, at one point during the aerial assault, over 500 people were killed within two nights.
“London was better known as a target for Nazi bombers during the Blitz, but other cities also suffered terribly, including Belfast, Manchester, Plymouth and Coventry. Those of us who lived through it won’t forget it, and this anniversary cannot pass without every Long Islander understanding what was at stake,” offered Murray.
Labor Day Weekend’s Battle of Britain program at the American Airpower Museum will be held from Friday, September 3rd through Monday, September 6th, between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Gate donations will be requested, $15 for adults, $10, for seniors and veterans and $5 for children. Flight and armor experiences will also be available. The museum’s web site is www.americanairpowermuseum.com

Assuming Earl blows on through as forecast, the plan is to kick off the weekend activities with the arrival of the Lanc and Spits on Saturday at Noon. The ceremonies planned for Friday with Battle of Britain survivors will take place on Sunday.

10:50AM!! Just passing Sheltair when I heard them on Tower. Coming in from the North they set up for a low Fly-By on Runway 1. I set up in the rear lot of Atlantic by the #s of 1
as they turned in from the shoreline. What a beauty. After Fly-By they did a left turn out and came in on 3-2. I went over to the Museum parking lot to get a closer look then headed out
as I had errands to run. Heard one of the AAM workers tell a guest the Spitfires wouldnt be coming in till tomorrow. Anyone confirm?

That's affirmative, due to the high winds the Spitfires will arrive sometime Sunday, with the BoB festivities around 12.

I was told the reason was high winds. Guess the pilots/owners didn't want to chance it today. One was coming from NJ. Forgot where the other one was coming from. I should have called before making the trip out. What a dud. My advice is to call first. Well at least I was able to listen to Tony Harnell's new CD on the drive out there.

Great job by the AAM. I arrived around 10:30 and positioned myself by the lot closest to the "covered" fence overlooking the numbers of 1-9. Well my patience paid off when i saw them prepping the Lancaster and the Spitfire. And the Thunderbolt joined them. The Lancaster took off first and after a delay due to a couple of arrivals the Spitfire and Thunderbolt went out to catch up with them. At this point I moved over to the hill across from Dave & Busters joining a whole bunch of people. The three aircraft returned and did two really cool formation Fly-Bys. Then the Lancaster & Thunderbolt headed out over the ocean and the Spitfire returned for two fast Fly-Bys before saying goodbye and heading out South going home. The Thunderbolt returned and did one high fly-by before landing. I had my scanner with me(headphones) and was waiting to see if the Lancaster was returning. They didnt disappoint flying another fast and low pass before coming around to land. From there I headed to the beach and around 3:05 here comes the Lancaster turning over Tobay Beach and heading south along the shoreline before disappearing from sight. That was a bonus to see them again. Were they heading home? I thought they were based in Ontario? Maybe doing a little sightseeing before heading North?
Great job guys.

One of the more poignant moments of the weekend. Tom Duffy is talking with the sister of Robert Minnick. Minnick was a Long Island native, who joined the RCAF in 1940, and was trained as a pilot. In August 1941, Minnick was killed in Scotland while training to fly the Spitfire. He was the first Long Island resident to be lost in WWII. Among his effects, his pilot's log was returned to his sister, however she never really knew what all the entries meant. When she heard there was going to be a Spitfire at the museum, she and her son came down to see it and the pilot. Tom spent some time explaining the entries, telling her about the types of aircraft and missions her brother flew during training. She was absolutely thrilled to see the aircraft, talk to Tom, and learn more about her brother, nearly 70 years after his death.

All in all, an excellent program put on by the museum and an extremely fun few days of aircraft and history awesomeness. I'm moving up to Connecticut at the end of the week, so sadly I won't be able to jet on over to FRG on a moment's notice when something cool shows up. But I couldn't think of a better way to spend my last weekend on LI!

This event was a big let down after all the hype. ALL the info that was presented in the ensuing days stated that the ceremony would take place Sunday at Noon with the memorial flight as part of it. I purposedly moved things around to attend Sunday to see the Lanc and Spit fly, as it was stated that Sunday was the day and 'maybe' they might fly on Monday. What happened then? Why could the Lanc not have been positioned outside the fence until the 1200 flight, and then brought inside for people to tour it? There was an announcement made that it would fly on Sunday, I hung around all day but the flight never materialized. I kept asking every volunteer I could find for an update but no one was given any info.
I left disappointed. I guess to see a Lanc and Spit fly I'll need to go back to the UK? (or Canada at least)

Sorry you were disappointed, ch2tdriver, but they were fighting windy conditions (especially cross-winds) all day Saturday and Sunday. That is the reason why the Spit didn't arrive until Sunday morning (it was scheduled for Saturday with the Lanc) and it put a damper on flight operations all weekend. With its narrow-track landing gear, the Spit is a handful in crosswinds, and I can understand Tom being especially careful. In talking with the Lancaster crew, their arrival on Saturday was a bit sporting, and they too wanted to exercise caution. The hope was to have both aircraft fly on Sunday, but the winds did not cooperate. The reason you weren't able to get an update from the museum volunteers was that the situation was fluid, and every attempt was made to fly the aircraft on Sunday. If anything, the flight crews were more disappointed than you that they were unable to fly on Sunday.
Unfortunately, that is part of the reality when you are dealing with 70 year old airplanes.

That's really nice work, Dan! I love your perspective on things, and that first C-47 shot is some of the best panning work I've seen! Sorry to see you leaving the Island, but good luck up in CT, and I hope to bump into you now and then.

I can fully appreciate that, regarding the winds and operations. However the museum could have done a much better job of keeping people informed of this. Not once was the weather as a factor mentioned. If on the PA it was mentioned "Folks we're keeping an eye on the wind situation today.....as of now it is a factor.....don't want to risk these planes.....etc.." I would have kept the band on my wrist, left early, tried to salvage my day and come back the following afternoon. As it was I hung around in hopes that they would fly, as there was a brief reference that the Lanc would, when they were offering a ride opp for $2 grand.
Moose BTW nice to meet you Saturday...I was the one with Eric H.

The AAM was updating their plans on their Facebook page and as of Sat night they werent sure about flying on Sunday because of the weather. I also like that if you become a "fan" of their page they will answer your questions, follow up on comments and allow you to post pictures.

Rotary Wing ops are okay, airport is closed to Fixed Wing traffic only.
I have a few days of editing left but here is one I was processing and I liked.... what do you think? I thought the Panorama look helped it out a little.... Like or don't like?

Nice Dept of Justice maroon AStar, N779CP, was parked on the back ramp of Atlantic. Had a crew of 3 in solid khaki flightsuits, one sporting a shoulder holster. Headed out to the NW
around 2PM. They used the "Charlie Pop" call sign when departing as opposed to a govt call sign like "Flint", "Omaha" or "Idaho".

Anyone interested a nice looking Falcon from the "Republique Francaise" (written on cabin) landed and is over at Sheltair. Looks like it'll be here awhile as they plugged up the engines and just about everything else. Actually had a very cute looking blonde in Army green flightsuit doing the job climbing all over the jet.
Earlier an Army UH-60 that was shutdown by Sheltair cranked up and headed out to the NE on a beautiful day!!

I have been accused of a lot of things before but never this. Pilot of this Falcon 50 says to me "did you take a picture of a kiss in red lipstick on the radar dome?" My reply was "but it is not a Boeing!" He Loved my pictures of his aircraft but later the same night a girl (I HOPE) kissed the radar dome with red lipstick. He was not 100% sure it was not me and had to ask! WOW, I do not even like Chapstick touching my lips. And serious...the aircraft is cute, but it is no 727...and that would take massive amount of beer for me to kiss one...but red lipstick?!?!? WTF

Apparently some sort of UN related VIP flight - it departed JFK, and we heard them vectored to FRG.

Is there an Olive Drab B-25 flying out of FRG this weekend? I was flying with my student in the south practice area today, exactly south of the RM Lighthouse when I saw an OD B-25 flying along the beach eastbound at 2000'. We were 500' above it and less than a half mile away. It had an emblem on the tail. I'm familiar with the AAM B-25 and it was definately not Miss Hap.
I wish I had a camera as I had a perfect view of it with the lighthouse in the background. It would have been an awesome shot!

According to the NJ Aviation Hall of Fame show flyer (http://www.njahof.org/doc/ahof_ww10_web.pdf), they were scheduled to have a B-25 at their show at Teterboro this weekend. Perhaps that is what you saw? I don't know which B-25 was going to be at the show. The Yankee Air Force shows their B-17 is at the show, but not their B-25, and the Collins Foundation airplanes are all elsewhere this weekend. And since Jim and Dan were both at LGA with the AAM's C-47, I don't think Miss Hap was at TEB.
