I'm kind of bummed that it falls on the same day of the airshow, but hopefully you guys can get good pics/video.

And I'm kind of annoyed about New Highway.

So the "Today At Farmingdale 2008/2009" thread is officially closed after 66 excellent pages and we will continue onward and upward with this thread for everything NOT air show related.
Sounds good to me!! 8)

I liked the old thread as people would stumble upon it and be able to see the last few years at KFRG. I have had Airport admins to people in the parking lot comment about how they could not believe all the cool stuff that has visited. If the thread is 10 pages or 200, I always click on the last page to see the updates? Why did the old thread needed to be closed? :(

Hey guys. I didn't know where to ask this, but I didn't think it was worthy of its own thread.

What is the largest aircraft that you have seen (or heard of) landing/taking off at FRG? I have seen some 737's when teams fly in, but that's about it.

moose135
2010-05-24, 10:09 AM
The two largest I've personally seen are the 757 - actually a USAF C-32 flying as Air Force 1 - along with the C-17 that brings the Thunderbirds team gear in for the airshow.

And while I never saw it myself, friends who worked for Fairchild-Republic back when they were building A-10s tell of the time a C-5 dropped in to FRG, back in the mid-70s.

Fred,
Just curious, are the (4) F-18s coming in from VFA-86 by chance ??
And will they be doing flyovers for the NYC fleet week ??

Unless the Hornets plan on flying cross country from MCAS Miramar they will be coming from MCAS Beaufort in SC. This is the same base from which the 3 Hornets from VFA-86 that visited last week are attached. VMFA-115, VMFA-122, VMFA-251, VMFA-312, VMFA(AW)-224 & VMFA(AW)-533 are the resident units from MAG-31. There are a few squadrons down there that have some nice hi-viz markings. I'm hoping the Werewolves of VMFA-115 make the trip. Hate to speculate, but I honestly would not be surprised if 2 of these Hornets end up being Harriers from MCAS Cherry Point.

Going to be a great weekend either way! :D :D :D

Was that actually Air Force 1, or just painted like it for a movie or photo op? Also, its hard to believe that the FRG runway could support the weight of a C-17, much less a C-5.

I looked up the C-5 take off distance and it says about 8400ft. With FRG only having about 6500ft, that must have been really close, or one hell of a rocket show.

Actually, I just found a link (http://www.ktb.net/~billmeco/burc5a.html) that shows photos and tells a story of a C-5 taking off of a 6800ft runway to help transport F-117 parts from Burbank to Palmdale. Maybe with a light load it can be done.

moose135
2010-05-25, 07:49 AM
Yes, that really was AF1 - President Bush made a campaign visit to LI during the 2004 election campaign. The USAF's 89th Airlift Wing out of Andrews operate 4 C-32s for VIP travel.

I don't have the FRG runway weight bearing data handy - only info I see published online is for single or dual wheel, and with the multi-wheel landing gear on the C-17 and C-5, they will have higher limits. And don't forget, take off distance is dependent on aircraft weight - those guys weren't going out at max T/O weight. In fact, I remember when they departed last year, the Thunderbirds were headed to Colorado, I believe, but the C-17 was going to make a fuel stop at McGuire first, as they had a light fuel load to get in and out of FRG.

hiss srq
2010-05-25, 10:44 AM
AF1 as a VC25 would be one heck of a sight at FRG. Sadly, it will never happen. Due to the weight of the airplane as well as taxiway turn limits that airplane would never make it. Runway length is usually not an issue for the VC25 though. On September 11th, 2001 SRQ had 7,000 feet of available length and AF 1 was off before the intersection at 4/22 which is approx 3800 feet or sdo when departing on 32 at that time.

I needed a six pack of red stripe?

Umm, Tomorrow there will be a photo flight with Sean Tucker and Kirby Chambliss and the Seneca around 6-7 pm

I will post some pics

Well, airshow week is always fluid. Last year they came in on Thursday, so that would seem to be the same this year.
However, my info came from a friend where the planes are due to park. Good Luck either way.
Personally I hope it's Thursday, I'm off that day. :)

I was just over there .. with the exception of 2 things, it was very quiet.

Exception #1: It looked as if the CF-18 support team was there, however I only saw 1 member, and she happened to be a very good looking red head :D

Exception #2: They were using a car to jump start the Oracle plane

From the other thread:

Sorry folks, but today while I was waiting for Blue Angel #7 with the family a car hit the lip and struck my brother and aunt and hit the car and narrowly missed me. Thankfully they are both in stable condition. Because of this information on the first page may be out of date and I probably will not be able to make it back to the airport to provide people with live updates.

I would also like to thank Fred, the photographer with the camo lens( sorry I think I forgot your name), the two off duty EMT's, and all the people who called 911. I don't know what we would have done without you guys.

I would also like to thank the Dept. of Homeland Security,SCPD, and the East Farmingdale Fire Dept. for responding quickly and getting everyone to safety.

How about some of those earlier shots Kenny?

Thanks Fred It was my natural instinct (from modern warfare 2 :borat: ) to pull my brother the hell out of harm's way.

You and Lou are the true hero's though you guys really helped my mother and the rest of the family get it together if it wasn't for you guys it would have been worse.

As for their condition they have both been discharged and my brother got some bruses, and minor back injury. My aunt got a laceration and some major bruses. Both of them are very lucky.

That bum is a friend of mine and you gave him a hard time after he spent 10 hours on a Very HOT ramp for 2 days where everyone feels they should have access... Including yourself and he trys to keep it from being a circus as airshow performers are preparing and not showcased there.

Please do not disrespect Shelt Air or any of their employees as the DID let you have access all day until one in your party gave massive attitude and total disrespect. And he Does own that side of the airport....as far south to the runway and as far north as NFI. He does more for us than any other airport would ever do.

I was their, remember?

And people should remember that you do not chop the hand off that feeds you. That week was the last time they ever sold fuel to an airplane I was involved in. Same goes for the other person in the group that stood up. And 3 of four of us from that group are badged for FRG access and operate with tennants of the airport... So we had rightful access. The disrespect didnt start untill after the untimatum was placed out there. I remember well that you were there Fred. He may be your friend but the bottom line is said individual initiated even after 3 of us showed credentials validating our presence on field and in the FBO. He may do a great deal for your photography access but when people who buy fuel, use GPU's and general services there get shelved and singled out for no rational reason that doesnt sit well with me. I stick to my opinion as such about siad individual and that SheltAir location. And he doesnt "own" the airport in that range of locations. A fellow in Florida does. He may be your friend but that shouldnt bar others from sharing opinions favorable or not. I know there is a number on this site that will allign behind me. All due respect to you though Fred.

Wow....you FRG guys have it good! Try that at ISP and you will loose your badge priviledges and access. Seriously, I have been AT MY AIRPLANE preflighting it on the secluded west ramp no less, and been approached by airport ops and asked to see my badge then get 20 questions. Outside the gate in the parking lot at the west side the same will happen except this time it is SCPD. And this is all with a valid reason for being there!

I recently got checked out in a 172 at FRG and have the FRG badge. Yesterday I was over by Sheltair watching the F-18 come in. I had my badge on and could have easily gone thru the gate but did not. My airplane was not there and I had no valid reason for being on Sheltair's airshow hot ramp wandering around. If you used your badge to gain access, and bring in friends no less, then the least you can do is cooperate with the people at the FBO. Unless they were preventing you from accessing your airplane, it was most likely you were sightseeing or trying to get that shot few others can get.

If Sheltair was really nice enough to know you were there on the ramp to gawk, and let you do so for hours then you give them a hard time? I think you may be biting the hand that fed you.

Like I said....compared to ISP it seems that FRG is a VERY friendly place!

Steven Holzinger

Normally on a Thursday, the Blues will arrive early and land. The diamond will then go up for about an hour to the show site to get points of reference. When they land, the solos will go up and get their points of reference. When the respective jets land, the team will debrief. They will all go up around showtime and fly a full practice.

As you can tell, Thursdays are BUSY days for the team.

Talked with the A-10 pilots for a bit after they landed. They chose to circle and wait on the BAs - tower offered to let them make a straight-in to 19, but they wanted to to fly an overhead pattern on arrival, so they decided to wait.

Anyone get a shot of the other side of the special CF-188? It's got 4 Wing Cold Lake on top of the tail, but the engine covers are from 425 ETAC, which is the eastern base at Bagotville, QC. Since it's a representational, it's probably got Bagotville on the starboard tail, but I'm still curious. The all-grey -188 is also from the 425 ETAC (look at the top of the tail).

I think that's because administratively, they're out of Cold Lake but I know they came out of the Que. I was speaking with a few of the team members and they said that they came out of Quebec. Their truck also has graphics out of 425 ETAC.

It very well could be like the Blues being out of Pensacola but in the winter they're in El Centro.

I've been to quite a few events which I have considered "loud". A few NASCAR races, and some concerts.......but to have the Blue Angels 50 feet above you as they land on runway 32.....absolutely INSANE! I'm sure some of you guys where there at around 2:45 today. My camera got screwed up so I missed some great shots but hopefully tomorrow I will get some.

And any word where the Marines will be doing their demo?
I'm going to Eisenhower at 10 to see that demo which is over by 2 then head over to FRG hopefully
to catch the Blues landing (traffic willing, it sucked today coming back from Jones but it was a Friday)
and the 3PM demo.

The difference between the F-18 and the CF-18 is that light. Canada does a lot of operations for NORAD and that spotlight allows them to identify aircraft tail numbers ect; when it's dark.

The demo, which you all know by now, at FRG was cancelled. I talked to a Cobra pilot at Eisenhower and he told
me that because of all the planes parked at FRG they decided to cancel. The demo was SPECTACULAR but that'll be on
the Fleet Week thread!! :D
AND I just got to FRG in time. JUST in time. Parked by the Crazy Donkey and walked down 110 just as they came
sweeping across from the NE.
Then checked out the "Meet and Greet" which was pretty cool.

They are relocating the "B" taxiway, and then will be reallocating the 1/19 runway, in effect, moving it northbound approximately 1000 feet. The taxiway was too close to 1/19 for two large aircraft. One on the taxiway & 1 on the runway, did not leave enough safety clearance. So they are relocating "B" westward by approximately 100 feet. The south end of the field is completed (south of the terminal) and they plan to have the north end done by the end of this summer. Read more about it here:
http://www.republicairport.net/Taxiway- ... roject.htm (http://www.republicairport.net/Taxiway-Bravo-Relocation-Project.htm)

Work then shifts to moving 1/19 northbound approx 450 feet to give runway 19 an overrun area before Rte 109. They are not lengthening the runway, just adding the safety area. Again you can read about it here:

Thanks for the info. I read, and confirmed the demolishing (and hopefully re-building) of the AAM. Hopefully it all works out.

"The RSA relocation project can only be accomplished with the removal of the existing Hangar 2 (currently being leased by SheltAir), Hangar 3 (existing American Air Power Museum), and the associated aircraft aprons and taxiways/lanes."

So I'm going through pictures I took last week at FRG and one was of the nice looking R-44 Clipper that
hangars over by Atlantic, N272DW. This copter has been here for years and was also used during the air shows to ferry people back and forth from Jones Beach. On a number of occasions I heard them on FRG Tower advise they would be landing at an off site pad to the north. I figured must be some rich guy landing
on his property somewhere. So this morning I finally decided to check out who this might be since his website is on the side of the copter.
http://watermiller.com/?id=About-3
Well DUH ME!! when I see who operates this copter. (Getting old and slow :) )
Very nice indeed. And interesting reading.

Notice in the pics they are wearing the newer helmets with the advanced weapons system built into the front of the visors? I forget what they are called.

Thats a real warplane, there. Love the demo squadrons and the Blues/T-Birds are always great. But IMO, theres something a bit extra special about seeing a "combat ready" aircraft like this Rhino was, especially from a squadron as esteemed as 213. Good stuff.

Now all we need to do is get word down to Oceana to have someone send a CAG bird up here!

Anybody know the reason for the stay over? Does this happen frequently? Maybe I'll take a ride out Thursday or Friday during lunch or wait till Saturday. Nice shots. George

Usually to build cross country time...and at the same time, visit family.

Hadn't seen this thread. But I was pleasantly surprised.

At 1415, while in our front yard and as my 3 year old was hitting balls that I was pitching to him, (BTW, HOLY COW! My son is hitting balls. Thats nuts!) the Superhornet banking high over our home.

A very nice unexpected surprise. But she showboated for you guys, as the afterburners were not on and she gracefully banking slowly by, sounding more like a low 747 than a jet.

Nice pics guys!

Funny shots, Christina and Tim !!! Ha!! At least my Corsair shirt looked good from behind !!

Right now, I don't have any new info about when the Super Hornet will be actually arriving
on Thursday, or what NAVY squadron it is from, BUT I did hear it could possibly be a
Super Hornet that's less than 4 months old, so keep your fingers crossed for a brand new
SUPER BUG arriving at FRG on Thursday, because that would definitely be SWEET to see !! :borat:

Holy **** fred! What happened? Did it slam into slam into another car and go on fire or just some engine troubles?

btw- I saw some of those big paving trucks going on New Highway today, does anyone know if they are just filling in remaining holes or repaving it?

Hey Fred, Jack would have had that fire put out in seconds!

Actually Steve shown here had it out within seconds... It was like he did that 3 times a day everyday. I was pissed he did it so fast as I had no take to take pictures of the fraction of the moment he gave me. Most firemen would take a minute or so to get everything prepped, but AARF was acting faster than most fire departments would if there was a family stuck inside.

To say I was stunned was an understatement! IT WAS AWESOME and I should have run Video!
