Just caught 3X Blackhawks overhead here in Melville traveling North presumably out of Republic.
i'm curious, are they army or air force? army are dark greenish-black while USAF are more dark grey and have the refueling probe sticking out. navy -60's are light grey.

I know all 3 versions well and I was wondering myself. By the time I got out of the house I could only see them from the rear through the trees and I couldn't confirm the refueling probe. They were dark in color so they may have been USAF Pave Hawks, but definately not USN Sea Hawks. Saw the separate thread for the Angelina Jolie film, but these were 3 Sikorskys in delta formation.

I'll put this in the FRG thread since I figure the ship was working FRG tower.
Was heading up to Syosset on Jericho Turnpike making a turn on Jackson to go North when all of a sudden I
spy a low flying helicopter west of me. It then turned and flew West. This was around 5:30 or so. When we
reached our destination (MIMS) on Berry Hill Road it was now east of us still low. I believe it was N355AG the
Al Cerullo TwinStar even though it was dark I know that ship has a bright red anti-collision light on its belly.
Anyone know what they were up to? Filming?

Filming for the movie with Ang. Joile. That movie better be one hell of a block buster when it is done for as much jet fuel as those guys are burning. LOL Not that I am some sort of enviormentalist. Al has been REALLY busy these months since the Memorial Day air show.

Expressjet E-145XR
N12175 still sitting on the south end of Sheltair.
Quiet and a steady/coldy rain began falling just as I got home.
Around 3:20 while watching football I heard a copter pass by my house low heading east.
It was TwinStar N179MT flying well below 1000 in the rainy weather following the LIE EB.

BTW the 737 is still there (11AM) and about 5 jets cruised out of Atlantic heading out around 11:30.
One was Charlie Thirteen and Tower said "Enjoy the game". Another I saw a guy in Jets gear boarding.
What is the flight time from FRG to IND?
Also a nice blue/grey Bell 407 departed from the Atlantic area heading NW but returned soon after as they
encountered inclement weather. N407MS. A new tenant or visitor?

After being home all day yesterday except for a quick ride to Merrick I decided to take a run to FRG despite
the crappy weather. It was kinda busy with 1-4 in operation and a number of jet arrivals and departures,
Then around 2PM I heard CG helo 6507 operating Special VFR to the North inbound. They came in over the
numbers of 1-4, wheels down, about 500 feet. They flew about 3/4s down the runway then turned north
and flew over Sheltair and disappeared into the mist and low clouds. 20 minutes later they returned, flew along 1-9 and landed and shutdown at Sheltair. I hung around FRG till 3:30 and they were still there. And the weather was getting any better. The ship was from CGAS Atlantic City.

This flight originated in Calgary, and there were less than 50 passengers on board (only used 1 bus). Charter operators send all there information to US Customs electronically now, so its very simple for one inspector to clear the flight.
Usually a team representative will gather up all the passports and present them to the inspector, meanwhile the passengers are deplaning and getting on the bus parked planeside. By the time everyone is off, the inspector has taken care of everything he needs to. Gives the passports back to the team rep and off they go. The inspector then takes care of the crew and he's finished. Usually takes less than 10 minutes to clear the flight.
On a side note, it was interesting to see that the last two people off the aircraft then on the bus were the team captain, Jerome Iginla, then the team coach, Duane Sutter.

Stopped by around 4PM and a 727 from HE "Tex" Sutton (Forwarding Co) is sitting on the Sheltair ramp.
Nice logo on the tail and "First Class Equine Air Travel" on the cabin. This was a former DHL 727-224 and
Kalitta is listed as the owner according to an N # search.
Air Canada Airbus just came in with the Ottawa Senators for tomorrow afternoons game. This is in the usual
Atlantic spot.
And around 4:15 a Navy T-39 Sabreliner (Rocket 304 I believe) landed on 1-9 and taxied over to Sheltair.
Looks like they will be here at least overnite. Touching moment when a female pax or crew member headed
out to the parking lot to get picked up and received long hugs from two family members, possibly parents.
What a beautiful day!!

btw- Who thinks it's time for a new thread?

fred, any idea who that sabre belongs to?
From Fred's photo, it looks like the BuNo is 159365. According to Scramble, it belongs to Training Squadron-86 (VT-86) Sabrehawks out of NAS Pensacola. The F/A-18 looks to be out of VFA-87 out of NAS Oceana.

Nice shots!
I was all set to go out to Nikon in Melville to pick up my lense from repairs today and swing by Republic for a while. Turns out when I called Nikon they were closed today but Nikon due to Good Friday, thus scrapping my Republic plans.
Hopefully they will be there on Saturday or maybe staying for the weekend due to Easter.
Again nice shots!

Probably a pilot who needed some flight time to maintain currency or meet training requirements, and he decided to make a hop to FRG for the weekend. May very well have family/friends in the area, and used the training sortie to make a visit. It's not unusual.

I got there around 4 Friday and the 727 was already there. The T-39 came in around 4:20 and the Hornet must
have been after 4:45 or so.
The Air Canada "U2" Airbus came in at 2:35 this aft to pick up the Ottawa Senators. Game just ended (Isles beat
them 4-1)at 4:37 so probably a departure around 6 or so I would guess.

I was there today I saw the 727, F-18, T-39 and a WII era US Army Air Corps Trainer, I forget the name of it but on the side it said T-237 I believe John has a couple of pictures of it.
I'll try to go Monday morning and catch the take off.

Took a ride over to FRG today after my daughters soccer game only intending to see if anything interesting around and grab some lunch and wound up hanging around for two hours. This due to a lot of Sunday helo traffic. Sikorskys 401CV, 139CC and 76DT, EC-120 12NY, Bell 430 N430HF and I saw a JetRanger land at Sheltair. I also watched Skytypers 2 and 6 crank up by their hangar at Atlantic and when they taxied out I drove over to watch them depart from 3-2 by Route 110 and saw them join up with three others. They departed to the south as a Flight of 5 on a training flight. Despite the chill in the air that was a pleasant sight to warm one up. Earlier I watched the 5 pilots line up along the fence by their hangar and do a "walk through"of their maneuvers. I guess thats what you would call it. That was pretty interesting to see.
And just before I was leaving I saw a lot of emergency vehicles "Code 3" racing west on Rt 109. There was
a "pin job" on 109 just west of 110. Checked that out, one car had to have the door cut off to get the patient out but no medevac called in so I finally headed home.

Yes it was. I was sitting in my beach chair eating Wendys and catching some warm sun rays in the back of the
Sheltair parking lot for about an hour and nothing exciting in or out.
Beautiful day though, 8)

Interesting to note they planted that G3 just a tad early, notice he's touching down in the "overrun area" well ahead of the piano keys.
Guess he's practicing approaches for when they update Runway 19's threshold.

Awesome photos! Where are you taking these shots from, if I may ask? I'm still trying to figure out where at FRG I should be when the Blue Angels arrive next month. There are too many obstacles obscuring the view of the runways with the fences or walls everywhere.
BTW, it looks like N526ER was really close to stalling in that sequence.

That explained why the pilot was at 80K over the threshold with 90 degrees nose down! You should have seen the approaches. Carrier pilots would have been giving a salute as he passed the old tower at eye level with no power/full flaps! It was AWESOME!

There was some action at FRG today.
The AAM took out all the warbirds and flew the WACO bi-plane
New Highway has construction markers which I assume will lead to repairs (better not be on airshow week!)
There is a pile of dirt across from the AAM ( runway 19 construction?)

I think they are working on taxiways across Rwy 1/19, the runway itself isn't being worked on currently.

There are 4 Bell 407's over on Atlantic's ramp, they've been here all week, all come back to Grizzly Helicopters in Montana. They have all been flying 3-4 times a day never the same times twice.
Certainly looks like some "black ops" type of mission going on. They all have extra antenna's on the ships that are not standard issue.

Usually if the owner owes lots of money, an airport may tow the aircraft to an area that can not be accessed
to limit severely the possibility that the pilot may fly off without paying the tab. So there she sits with a story... death in the family, financial difficulty, Neglect, or just plane forgot..... The story of this unknown aircraft.

OK, I just got buzzed by an F-18 here in Melville! I'm busy getting stuff done at the office when I heard a very unique noise that I don't hear too often. I could tell by the sound that it was a military jet. I was told there were 5 overhead all told. I ran out of the office just in time to see the last one fly by, circling for an approach to 14. I'm guessing Navy jets (not the Blue Angels) based on light gray paint.
Anyone know why they are here?

Ill take a ride by in the morning after tee-ball. I have an altima now. So if you see me wave lol. Oh the jets are way behind shelter air so not the greatest place to get off a shot. You're right about that, he's not so little!
He'll be around for the show this year. Depending on who's flying on Fri, we may be at FRG, especially if the Blues aren't practicing.

Great shots but its not fair. You get voice mails, txts, twitters you name it alerting you of great photo
opportunities.
THEN, while we poor slobs have to shoot through, over and around fences you have unlimited access to the
tarmac and hangars.
Its not fair I tell you......NOT FAIR!!!!!!

I went to FRG today and it was like a ghost town, here are some things worth mentioning:
F-18's are still there as expected.
The NFI Husky was flying around
The 4 helicopters are still at Atlantic
There was a all black Cessna at Atlantic but they moved the plane before I was able to get a shot of it

Fantastic photos, as usual!
Now I've got 2 questions for those more in the know:
1) Will New Highway be inaccessible on Sunday and if so, how would you get up close to Sheltair?
2) And for those of us without field access, what would be the best place around the perimeter to go watch them depart?
(ok, maybe that was really 3 questions).

1) Will New Highway be inaccessible on Sunday and if so, how would you get up close to Sheltair?
Construction is from Mon-Fri
2) And for those of us without field access, what would be the best place around the perimeter to go watch them depart?
If it uses 14/32 (which it most likely will) the best place to watch them or take pics when they depart is across the street at the main terminal.

"Sky Boss", came in less than 10 minutes after the 18's left. I took the family over to AAM for the afternoon and was able to chat with Dan Dameo for a bit. Really cool to speak with him about the Six of Diamonds & his experience flying the Legacy Flight W/The Navy. It's always neat to meet a pilot who you've been watching fly for years. It's funny, I actually turn into a "Fan" when I meet these guys. I've done business with sports stars & celebrities many times & I've never really been "starstruck" but when I meet these guys, for some reason I turn into one of those dorky fanboys!
He had no idea that the 18's were even there and laughed when I told him that he was probably flying over the Jones Beach Monument when they took off.
He said that Andrews was amazing this weekend and the the flight back up (1:05hrs) was beautiful. He's a great guy who was very nice to my wife & kids when we met. A real pleasure to speak with.

It's not uncommon to get a military visitor at FRG. They come for many reasons such as needing more flight time to just having the weekend off.

One of the reasons I love FRG is that it seems to be a great spot for military visitors. Sometimes they just stop in to
refuel and stretch their legs while others they stay a few days. From helos to fighter jets you just never know. :D
