I noticed at Shelt Air there's a ton of luxury cars cars all lined up waiting for VIPs. Looks like FRG is going to be a busy place.

US Open, Bethpage Black, next week. Atlantic has them too their lined up along the access road along 109.

Ernie Els' G-V N526EE is sitting over at Atlantic. Tail is blocked, so I'm not sure when he got here, but I can state it was after 9pm last night, and before 1145am today. ;)

Ernie must have taken in a practice round, aircraft departed at 4:30pm.

Caught Snoopy 1 departing around 3pm. They dragged her nearly to the runway before launching. It may have been a short flight - as I was headed home, there was a line of ominous looking clouds headed east.

Yup a rain line moved through around that time but nothing like the one that hit around 2:30 this morning!! Wow!!
I wonder if Snoopy is here for the Subway series game on FOX tomorrow.

Maybe, but perhaps they are here for the US Open. As I was heading home, I saw them circling over central Nassau, perhaps scouting out landmarks for shooting during the tournament.

Belmont Park has a registered helipad 4NY9. It is used as a soccer field most of the year, they paint the helipad lines a week before Stakes Day. This year's Stakes Day was actually not that bad, we had 50,000 patrons as of 4pm and the final count may be close to 70,000. There was a flyover around 10am, I missed it as I was getting my 25 EMTs and 10 Paramedics deployed throughout the Park. Belmont actually offers some great spotting sites for the JFK 22s. If anyone is ever interested in a tour of the facility or wants hassle free spotting access just lemme know.
i agree, it's a great spot to watch. i've been there on a few race days, my father was the on-site physician there for a while.

Niiiice. Snoopy 1 and 2 and are my favorite blimps. For a long time Goodyear and MetLife were the only blimps we'd see around here, and GY is cool but Snoopy the pilot is a lot more interesting to look at. My grandma worked for MetLife when I was little and I used to have an inflatable one hanging from my ceiling.

According to the MetLife Blimp Schedule (http://www.metlife.com/about/advertising/metLife-blimp/activity/index.html), it is scheduled to cover the Open, starting next Thursday. Doesn't mention the game tomorrow, but I wouldn't be surprised if it made an appearance since they have nothing scheduled for several days.

Just to clear up misconceptions on the Huey it actually belongs to the State Police, they brought her in for the open. She has an external litter pod on her and is quite dazzleing in person. I love hearing that sound of Hueys again since they left the 106 years ago. I used to watch the,m beat down the beach from my folks house in Long beach as a kid.

Not to argue, but since I've been watching it take off and land from outside my window, I can state they are using Atlantic's ramp. I grabbed a shot yesterday evening, will post sometime this week.

One or both will probably be here for the whole Open. Back in 2002 they used a 430 and a 407 to supplement the County Air
Bureau. Whenever there is an event on State park property they bring in one or two State copters. They did this for the Air
Show and usually for the July 4th fireworks. And if I'm correct they stage at an LZ at the State Park PD HQ at the golf course
area when the rounds are in action.

Took one of my dogs to get groomed this morning so being up early and a forecast for bad weather later I headed
over to FRG about 9:30. State 1-9 was sitting at Atlantic and Snoopy 1 headed out soon after I got there. The
Douglas C-47 also headed out on Runway 1 and did three more departures out to Captree while I was there.
Trumps 76 landed at Atlantic and idled for almost 20 minutes before heading out to A/C. At 11:00 the Boatpix R-22
which was parked behind the Huey took off and then the Huey took off from the Bravo pad heading out to Jones
Beach area. They used the call sign "Grey Rider One Nine" (at least that it what I heard). When they came back about
20 minutes later the rain was starting and the State crew (about 5 officers) along with ground personell from Atlantic
hooked up wheels to the UH-1H and pulled it into Hangar 54. It was interesting as they had two officers sit in the
cockpit and one officer on each skid by the open cockpit doors as they wheeled it over. As I left the copter was not
totally in the hangar and they might have been having some sort of problem. Snoopy 1 stayed up until about 1:30 or
so but with the weather worsening they headed back to FRG.

This article seemed to change on Republic's website:

American Air Power Museum (Hangar 3) Relocation

Due to the Runway Safety Area Projects, the American Airpower Museum will be removed due to its close proximity to Runway 1/19. The airport has set aside a parcel of land for the replacement and construction of a new hangar of approximately the same size, along with associated parking of 200 spaces for the Museum. A Negative Declaration for this action was adopted on December 4, 2006 under the State’s environmental review. The museum is currently working on development plans and a new facility is planned to open on or about 2012.
http://www.republicairport.net/American ... cation.htm (http://www.republicairport.net/American-Air-Power-Museum-Hangar3-Relocation.htm)

According to an AAM volunteer word has it that they are moving across the street near the old broken down Republic hangars, and it looks like they are doing construction now.

You mean the old buildings north of Conkin Street? No, that's not where they are going - for one thing, it would make flight operations impossible! The plan is to build a new facility across the airport near the 56th Fighter Group restaurant/terminal area.

Check out these overviews of the projects happening at FRG:
http://www.republicairport.net/pdf/Repu ... -FINAL.pdf (http://www.republicairport.net/pdf/Republic-Brochure-FINAL.pdf)
http://www.republicairport.net/pdf/Econ ... -Study.pdf (http://www.republicairport.net/pdf/Economic-Impact-Study.pdf)

They are about a year old - they still show the AAM moving SOUTH to the other side of the SheltAir ramp. The latest I've heard is the plan is to move it across near the restaurant. The only way to "manage to do something" if they are north of Conklin Street would be to re-route Conklin (not likely) or stop traffic on Conklin for aircraft to cross (less likely). The north end of Rwy 1/19 is actually being moved north about 450 feet, to permit adequate Runway Safe Area (RSA) between the south end of the runway and Rt. 109. With that, the RSA north of the runway extends almost all the way to Conklin Street - they are actually removing parking in front of Dave & Busters, and relocating the road along the east side of that parking lot. There is nothing in any of the documents indicating any issues with the restaurant.

Fighting_falcon_51
2009-06-21, 09:13 PM
Well what I was thinking they could do (if or when they move to Conklin) is they could have the WWII birds parked near sheltair and have them fly and do passes (like they normally do) and then to get up close to the planes they could figure out a way to get mass amounts of people across the street (like when they do tours of the old control tower) and then let them take pictures and send them back.

Speaking of the old control tower I need to get up there on Labor Day because I still haven't been up there and they will probably knock it down soon.

for as far back as i can remember deveolping the area between rwy 1 and rwy 32 approach ends was somethig that the airport wanted to do. i was kinda surprised when the new hangar went up behind atlantic as opposed to that area. IMO, the forrested area would be the best place to put the museum as:

1. it's isolated so you don't have visitors able to run out onto an active runway.
2. it's far enough from the runways themselves to be legal.
3. it's big enough to allow ample ramp and paring space.

and the big one reason:

4. if the job were to include an aerial movemet of the hangar they could hire me to fly it over there in a skycrane!

It was a "rally" of sorts to support the museum. As a few folks have pointed out, the current hangar is in the new FAA Runway Safety Area, and needs to be moved. Unfortunately, after being told that FAA funds could be used to relocate the building, the FAA came back last year and said that by law, the money can only be used to remove structures, not relocate them. Senator Schumer and Congressman Israel have sponsored legislation to allow the money to be used to relocate the museum. They were both there to speak in support of the museum, along with Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone and various veterans' groups. They took the P-47 and P-40 up for a couple of fly-overs during the event.

Did a quick ride by FRG today and as I was driving along the airport road west by Atlantic I stopped short when I spied
a jet black A355 Twinstar parked between Hangar 54 and Cablevision. Backed up and saw it had GI Joe markings on the cabin and tail boom and two guys in miltary fatigues hanging by it. No tail number but a quick look through my binocs saw it to be Al Cerullos N355AG (Which I figured). They took off direct from the dolly out to the SW. I recall reading this week there was going to be some type of beach "landings" or something in the NYC/LI area to promote the movie (Aug 8 in theaters near you). This copter must be involved.
Just a quick question. Does Al Cerullo do the paint work in his hangar there at FRG or do they contract it out? That ship
sure has gone through a whole lotta costume changes.

. This copter must be involved.:

I was sitting on the beach in Atlantic Beach Friday early PM where it did a low fly-by....I was actually going to ask for the tail number here as I couldnt catch it....Thanks :D

"Flight Check 55", the FAA Lear 60, was testing the ILS-14 approach this morning. Made several low approaches, then departed the area. Told tower they were having some "computer glitches" with the equipment in the back, and needed to terminate the test, and were probably heading back to AC.

From the signs, I believe it's for a new HBO series Boardwalk Empire.

I've just recently moved to the area, and while I've got the camera gear and a lot of photo experience, I've never photographed planes.

I work near Republic and I'm thinking of heading down there after work a few nights to see what I can get photos of. Anyone care to share any tips with a complete amateur at this stuff? Are there any spots where it's more advisable to park, or places to avoid?

Any help would be great.

Welcome John,
If you are coming by in the afternoon/evenings, the best place to spot is between the main terminal and the 56th Fighter group restaurant. You will not get hasseled, and you will often find people just hanging around watching the comings & goings. Only thing I would mention, is that Friday's the 56th has happy hour and the valets may use that lot for parking. Otherwise you normally have nothing to worry about. I work on the field, so we may bump into each other at some point...you will most likely run into Moose as well, he's a regular around here. If you see anyone shooting there with big white lenses, say hello.

So I stopped by tonight, probably around 5:30 - 6:00. I hadn't ever been to the airport so I took a lap around to see some of the places that look like they'd be good, and then stopped for 10 mins to just see a few small planes come / go. Got a few pictures, nothing great, but it was mostly just a trip to explore....

Do people just check flightaware to try and plan what they might see?

Basically, that's it. FRG is not a commercial airport, so GA traffic is the norm. Kalitta does a few 727 charters a week when Belmont is open for business. Other than that, the summer is not too interesting at FRG. Once hockey season starts, there are quite a few charters that show up, either to pickup the NY Islanders -or- bringing in teams to play the Islanders. Last year, aside from the Miami Air 737's we also got a Pace 737, two Swift Air 737's, Northwest A319, and a few Air Canada A319's. All of the hockey charters DO show up on FlightAware.

Happy Shooting!

POSTED MARCH 17TH 2008

The issue with new hwy is because the rain washes the side of the road out leaving the very edge of the road much higher. If you are driving and happen to look away at an aircraft and you slip off the side of the road, you try to put the car back on the road.....THAT IS WHEN ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE! The tire has a hard time on the lip and you pull the weel left until you clear it and are now sailing into the other lane.... This one here involded another car

http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/271103437_TdmGq-L.jpg

The ONLY way to fix new Hwy is to pave about 3 feet out from the roads edge on each side. Only then will the fence repairmen have the weekend off! :borat:

For now, if you go off the road.....KEEP GOING OFF. You can go off the road doing 100MPH and you will have no problem.... Try getting back on the road at any speed right now is just not possible.

AGAIN Thu Feb 12, 2009 7:23 pm

Lets talk about the road again?

I do have to say Fred's theory on how these accidents happen is spot on.

We were on New Highway today and were going Westbound, there was also a Van coming in the opposite direction (Eastbound), it looked like he wasn't paying attention and then he went off the road.

Fortunately he wasn't going that fast and kicked up some dust, and pulled back on the road, if he was going faster he would have either hit the fence on went on to oncoming traffic.

EDIT- After the Van incident I could have swore I saw a Agusta A-119 in a NYPD paint scheme but I am not 100% sure.

When I saw it a few weeks ago Al was using his ship 5AG (heard the call sign on Tower). Recently AG was back in its usual colors
and last Sunday I saw it flying past my house with the nose mounted Wescam camera.
I believe N355MH is a second ship that Al uses. IF you saw "Taking Pelham 1-2-3" 355MH was the ship used as the on camera

I was coming back from the beach today and on Hempstead Tpk just east of 135 and decided to do a quick run by FRG. I saw Direct TV 1 north of me heading towards FRG about 3:40. He was moving pretty fast so I figured he would beat me in. Guess not. For whatever reason the ground crew was still at the hotel so DTV1 had to loiter north of FRG until they got there. Finally came in around 4:10 with a right break onto the numbers of 3-2. The crew grabbed the ropes and pulled it over to the mooring where it was hooked. By 5PM they were airborne again and I saw them passing by my house heading up to the Stadium.
John mentioned maybe they are also here for the US Open (starts Mon) or maybe the Giants-Jets game Sat night but with the approaching hurricane they might be heading out of town quickly.

She was circling just north of Times Square for at least an hour this afternoon. There might have been an event down there, not sure. I do know DirecTV is going nuts promoting a new service only for Manhattan residents which is kind of a big deal and there are ads for it all over the city...aimed at people whose apartment buildings don't allow dish setups, you'll be able to watch every NFL game through your regular internet connection...$350(!) for the season.

Well, it's not from today, or even this year, but I came across an envelope of photos, and threw a few on the scanner. These are from March 11, 2004, when President GW Bush visited Long Island during the presidential campaign. He flew into FRG on the C-32. Arrived on Rwy 14, parked over by JetCenter (now SheltAir) and departed that evening off Rwy 32. These were shot with my old Yashica SLR:

As far as I know, the Trump 727 has barely moved from its LGA parking spot this summer. I suspect Donald has been sneaking out to FRG for some more economical transport. No way to tell for sure, but I think it's safe to say the economic collapse, particularly in real estate, has erased a large chunk of his wealth. Some of his properties, i.e. Trump Las Vegas, were struggling before everything went down the toilet.

Glad to see they got it fixed in time. When it came in during Friday's monsoon (approx 4pm), the left inboard main tire blew on landing. The sound, from inside the office, with a driving rain going on, still sounded like an M-80 going off. They were able to taxi to Atlantic under their own power, but that that tire was visibly devoid of air when it was parked. At 6:45pm when I left the office, they had a mechanic looking at it with that "how did that happen" look on his face.

i recall a similiar incident when a USN F-18E lost it's left main at the salinas airshow a couple years ago. i was standing with my back turned about 30 yards away. my ears weer ringing for at least an hour afterwards. the airplane was stuck in that position on the taxiway for 2 days until the navy could fly up a tire and mechanics.

It will be at the main terminal. Just a few visitors that came through this week. An Air Canda A320 was sitting on the ramp at Atlantic a few days ago when I left. That Hornet is assigned to VFA-106, the "Gladiators" squadron. They are the East Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron for the Hornet, and have the helmet on their squadron insignia. The original Hornet prototype, which wore these colors, didn't have the helmet on the tail.

Just what happened today. No action with the F-18 so I watched a Miami Air 737 come into Atlantic. They positioned it right by the fence along 109. It landed a little after 12 and departed with the Islanders around 2:30 off 3-2 heading up to Montreal. [quote="moose135"]Very cool John! Great catch on the two VH-60s! In case anyone is wondering, the first is 82-23742 and the second 81-23594. Both are assigned to the 12th Aviation Battalion, Military District of Washington, based out of Fort Belvoir, VA. Very nice shots, John!

Excellent shots and LOVE the black and gold colors. Very very cool.

Thanks again for the heads up on the Anniversary F/A-18. What a great visitor to have at Farmingdale. Made it out there late Sunday morning for a few pictures.

Met two very nice gentlemen unfortunately I didn't get there names. If they are on here I was the guy with the portable scaffold/platform.

Really wish I could have made it for the departure but my son's hockey ran late and we missed it.

Great departure shots "Moose!"

One from Sunday afternoon.

It was nice talking with you Fred ... and thanks for the use of the platform.

did some more research when i got home. looks like these two VH-60s are assigned to Charlie Company, and are two of only five VH-60s flown by the US Army.

Charlie Company is responsible for the priority air transport of Congress, the senior leadership of the Department of Department of Defense and other federal and state agencies in the National Capital Region. In addition to the priority air transport mission, the unit also supports the military District of Washington's contingency mission as necessary.

Well, being they parked right outside my office window, I can confirm they arrived with just the flight crew and 2 ground support personnel each. All were in fatigues, no "senior leadership" members were on board.

Right. When I was down there last August the UH-1Ns were all over the place but I've never seen these beauty VH-60s. And I've
been going down to DC at least once a year for the last 27 years. My wife lived down their for 10 years (H.S.)and we have many

I was kind of surprised I was the only one at the end of New Highway. When he was in position 2 minivans stopped by with kids to watch, but I was the only one at that vantage point with a camera.

BTW: thanks for the VH-60 info!

12:33AM "737" on final to 1-4. Watched as the well lit jet passed west of my house. Figured it was the Islanders returning from DC after a nice OT victory against the Caps. Headed back inside then heard another "737 in the area" ask the "Biscayne that just landed let us know when you have finished back taxing so we can land". At 12:41 the second 737 came in on 1-4. So one 737 was the Isles returning from DC and the other was the Sabres flying in from Buffalo after their OT win against the Maple Leafs.
Nice. And I was by FRG early this aft. and saw the Isles had all their own vehicles as opposed to the team bus I saw last Sunday. Wonder if they gave any Sabres a lift?

Biscayne 570 departed Runway 1-4 around 2:10PM on a pretty blustery day with pilots reporting wind shear around
1900 feet. I guess another plane will be coming in later to pick up the Sabres.

Air Canada jet being used by Edmonton Oilers sitting in the back of Atlantic ramp. Go around to the front of Hangar 5 and you can get a good look at the nose. Used by U2 during their "360" Tour it still has the U2 livery and writing underneath the cockpit "Running Down The Road Like Loose Electricity" a lyric from their song "Breathe".

Sounds like AC is running the U2 through the whole rotation of their hockey charters. The Devils were using it for awhile, also.

Donald has been using a Embraer Legacy and an occasional Gulfstream in two variations from time to time.

Also, on another note, it is not schedluled to fly to often but the newest, well second newest G550 in existance as of date of my posting is now based at FRG. N1LB. It belongs to a company that makes tampons and they are extremely secrative about their operations. I wont say where she is hangered at the airport but I will say she is in company of two other 550's a 4 and a 3 on the property in which she is hangered. The same company that owns her also has a pair of Falcon's. A 50EX and a 900EX. This 550 has it's own personal round the clock guard for it. She will not be flying very often but defineately keep a look out for her. She is going to be a very rare catch for a while.

I saw it there yesterday, so I have a good inkling of where its located.

On a related note, that particular bird was originally destined for Lehman Brothers, in fact the original delivery date was exactly 1 week after they went belly up. Glad to know it has a new home. I'm sure the new owners got a great deal on it.

Yeah, apparently they are. I think there could be more to it than meets the eye though. I just cant comprehend why they blacked all the windows out, made some other modifications to the faciluty and are putting a 24 hour guard on this airplane. It is just this jet too. The Falcon's are not so much secured. On another interesting note. I talked to TAG a few days ago about the plane and apparently it is already having SATCOM issues. Typical Gulfstream......

Decided to get out of the house for awhile and headed down to FRG. JUst as I arrived so did snow showers, some
heavy, along with a cold gusty wind. This didnt stop a number of jets departing and arriving. One of them was one
type I hadnt seen, a 1976 Lockheed JetSTAR II, N777AY. Even the controllers were asking what type of jet that was.
It was Dezer 1(written underneath the cockpit) from Team Dezer (written on the tail atop of the tail # and under
the DP logo.Plane shutdown, refueled and repositioned to the back of the Atlantic ramp.
