Didnt notice this yesterday but the fence by the parking lot adjacent to Hangar 5 is now all covered up with that
green grass-like substance making it impossible to sit and watch the aircraft. Of course that doesnt surprise me
as that is the Cablevision hangar and they are known for their.... "secrecy". :) :P
>Either you don't visit that area of FRG often, or you aren't very observant. <
More likely the second. :)
>They put that fence "grass" in 2 weeks ago. There are reasons why it was put it, but I am not allowed to say why. <
Well knowing the mind-set of Dolan and Cablevision it doesnt surprise me.

Can anyone confirm a P-51 take off/landing? Because I thought I heard something and by the time I got outside I thought I saw one in the distance.

Yes, a P-51 took off around 10am, returned around 11am. It was "Old Crow" - N451MG. I did manage to get a shot during his takeoff roll, but I was too far north on the runway, did not get the liftoff. Will post eventually, at work right now.

Oh yeah, Trump's S76 also paid FRG a visit today. Again...pics to follow at a later time.

And Kalitta Charters II 727 came in on 1-4 and roared out on 1-4. Interesting that it seems like they keep their engines
in idle while they offload?

I meant SJ....I guess I will be able to see the skytypers take off and maybe the warbirds flying around (if they are still flying at the show, does anyone know?)
I'm a little lost here...or maybe you are. The show the Skytypers left for is at Seymour-Johnson AFB in North Carolina. If you are here on Long Island, you aren't going to see them until they return.
Sorry I was lost, I have bad tendencies to word this wrong. Thanks though

First: the P-51 "Old Crow"

I was there today and at aprrox 3:48 a T-6 Texan ID: JMC 3829 took off....
I do have to say the people at the Republic FD are nice because I was standing outside the car with my scanner and they came by and I thought oh snap I am gonna get kicked but they asked if anything was wrong and we breifly talked about the airshow.
That was probably Jeff in his T-6.... He owns the AAM and almost all aircraft there. :borat:

I'm guessing since the tour of the aircraft is from 2:30PM to 4:30PM that the aircraft will be arriving earlier than 2:30PM. If any of the people with connections at Republic could pass along the arrival time when it is known the much less informed like myself would greatly appriciate it.
Thanks,

People were saying she arrived earlier in the morning and had been there for a while.
If anyone knows if they are staying the night and leaving tomorrow morning (what time ?? I'd love to get a shot of her in the air) or leaving today after the public open house from 2:30PM - 4:30PM could you please pass it along. Thanks.

Hi Moose,
Great shots as always, but who would expect anything less.
I saw you and Derf/Fred walking around getting your shots. I was the guy in the blue sweatshirt weight testing the picnic table by the fence.
Personally, I think that foggy, rainy background is absolutely perfect.
I agree. I asked one of the C.A.P. guards when she came in and said sometime before 10AM but, "It was all foggy and rainy," to which I replied, "Yeah that's OK how cool would it be to shoot a hurricane hunter coming out of the fog."
If anybody gets a departure time, please pass it along.
Thanks,
Fred

Hey, they look very similar! :)
I was able to run over and was a bit disappointed to see it already sitting there.
Just as I was walking up to it a 727 that said Kalitta Charter II landed out of the fog!
Camera was still in the bag. Would have made a nice shot with the jet spray being
kicked up on the runway...

Nice meeting you today pal!
You and your mom are very nice and it was a pleasure to chat with you two.
My son was acting like a 2 year old today but we still got to get the full tour none the less. The NOAA guys did a great job at showing the plane and speaking about their experiences. They were talking about flying out of Macdill in Tampa during the season and then bouncing all over the place for the rest of the year doing various assignments. They just got back from counting seals in Alaska for the last couple of months.
I think the interview will be on FOX 5 10:00 news. My son started fidgeting in the middle of the interview so I'm not sure how it will come out but I did laugh when he got excited and started waving to NEWS12 chopper.
On a side note, the camera man is actually a pilot and he said that he's getting into the aerobatic stuff. He hopes to get into the Jones Beach show next year. I can't remember his name but I told him about NYCAVIATION so hopefully he'll post here.

Wasnt going to stop by FRG today as I had a number of errands and the weather this morning with the fog was pretty lousy. But my wife asked me to drop off some lunch at her job which is on the way to FRG and the weather was clearing so I figured what the heck. Well I arrived at Sheltair and S76 N99DQ was cranked and headed out to the SW. At the same time I saw what looked like a Bell 407 departing from Atlantic to the SE. Driving over to Atlantic the Talon Air R-44 Clipper came in along Runway 1-9 and a dark S-76, N476CA with one pilot wearing a helmet departed to the NW. They returned soon after, dropped three pax, shutdown then around 1PM they took off from the numbers of Runway 1 out to Bridgeport. Trumps 76 came in from the NW and landed at Atlantic, picked up four pax and quickly out to the SW. And parked by the Atlantic side of Hangar 5 were three Bell 407s. One was in the livery colors of Petroleum Helicopters (N719PH) and the other two were maroon (N62774) and what looked to be black (couldnt read the N #). So some nice helo action for the hour or so I was there.

I swung by the area last week, after driving home from LGA...and Challenger 300 - N818KC was parked at the Talon Air Hangar. Now, this used to belong to Summit / JetDirect / Sentient /Jet Direct II (whatever they are now.) Maybe with JetDirect II filing bankruptcy the owners brought the aircraft to Talon. I'm at LGA for another 2 weeks, so, I'm out of the loop as to what's happening at FRG.

I'm at LGA for another 2 weeks, so, I'm out of the loop as to what's happening at FRG.
Great info!! Thanks.
I dont think they bought it because it doesnt have the AK tail. I think they are managing it for an accounting firm in the city.
Unless something changed in the last few months, I know who the principal owners are...and they have nothing to do with accounting firms. That's all I can say about them.

>a dark S-76, N476CA with one pilot wearing a helmet departed to the NW. One was in the livery colors of Petroleum Helicopters (N719PH) and the other two were maroon (N62774) and what looked to be black (couldnt read the N#). ,<
Had some time to drop by FRG and it was a repeat of yesterday with a few tweaks.
Waiting at the light at Conklin/110 I saw the Trump 76 head out to the south. Arriving at Atlantic the three 407s were joined
by a fourth and the dark 76, N476CA,was also back but this time had a grey Wescam type camera attached to the ships right side.
The crew arrived a few minutes later and after a long prepping they departed off Runway 1 and headed out high to E/NE.
The new 407 was N80044 who was from Grizzly Helo Leasing in Montana and I saw the N # of the other dark 407 and that was also
a Grizzly ship, N135GZ. I've seen both these ships here before.
Oh yeah N99DQ also lifted from Sheltair to the east.

Copters still there and around 1:15 N62774 took off directly from the Atlantic ramp to the SW. Watched as he barely got to 300 feet
and disappeared into the fog. Returned about a half hour later Parkway routing at low level. Had been over by Jones Beach but
couldnt get any altitude. Told Tower "I dont mind the rain but when I cant see anything thats not good". Heard a fixed wing radio they
broke out of the clouds at 1600 feet.

I was also there around that time and it looked like the maroon bell was having trouble taking off and the last time I saw it, he made a low pass near the 56.
Also I saw this camo plane with the Mexican flag on its tail start its engine up near the nassau flyers hangar
And near Sheltair I saw a plane that looked like a parachuting one, with a crow on its tail.

I think that was a Cessna Caravan - the drawing on the tail was a "Turkey Buzzard", at least according to what was painted below the picture. The fence was in the way of a good shot.

He had no trouble taking off it was the ceiling he was having problems with. He was at 200 barely making 300. With all the water towers and antennaes around I got a little nervous for him. He actually made it down to the Jones Beach monument before heading back.

That would be my best guess...they are all coming in over the next few days, and Sheltair has to have the cars in place, ready to go. Last thing you want is the T-Bird leader arriving and you tell him he has to wait for his car to be returned.

That is suppose to be Tuesday at 10:30am... I am calling BS on this but do not know.
They would not set it up for one test. They setup, test and then get the rest of the birds in the same day usually. That is what they did last year.
If they did test, he will be at the terminal.

I was at KFRG from 7:45AM to 4:00PM and this is what happened:
No show on the 3 horseman and Ed Hamill
They were right and the T-birds support plane was a C-130 "The Rock", The came twice and they are gone now
The T-birds came today around 12:30
I heard over my scanner that they were supposed to take off at 2 and land at 3 but they never did and there is a slim chance they will take off
Sean Tucker took off various times today
The air traffic controller was having issues with the planes because they were only operating on 1/19 most of the time, and the main terminal was limited to military aircraft.

The T-Birds brought 8 birds in, 6 single seat and a pair of 2-seaters. After the team was in, they towed one of the station wagons to the south end, but there is still another that was used for media flights Tuesday afternoon/evening, and scheduled Thursday as well. Did you actually see them working on the a/c, or could it be they just moved it off the ramp to keep it out of the way if they're not planning to fly it for a few days?

Longislandaviation.info changed the times later(check again), as far as the F-18 and A-10 I think its a 50/50 chance of 14/32 or 1/19 my guess is 14/32 but thats just a guess.

The Snowbirds are due in to Republic at 12:30PM according to the airport, not 6:00AM. They are also expected to make a few passes at the beach in the 12:30PM-2:00PM practice slot. I guess it will depend on fuel?
Take the A-10 & F/A-18 arrival times and guess. The Golden Knights, due in 8:00AM today arrived this afternoon.
The A-10 can use either runway, F/A-18's will use 14/32.
Tuesday 14/32 was closed to all traffic except military aircraft and the C-130 went out on 1/19.
Good luck.

A second Snowbird aircraft arrived a little after 10pm. They said the team was due in around 12:15 on Thursday, but they have a broke jet to recover first, and the arrival time is flexible.

Ouch, hopefully they have that fixed already, and yesterday they were using 1/19 and the they just switched to 14/32.

They had 14/32 closed to all but military during the day but I wonder if they're going to allow the Snowbirds use it as it's the only one large enough for a formation takeoff. When the solo (SB-11) came in on Tues, he used 19.
The weather forcast looks a little sketchy this weekend. I've switched back and forth 4 times trying to decide what day I head down to check out the show and which day I will hang around the airport.

Amid the air show traffic, this plain white Saab 2000 stopped by for a quick visit, under the callsign "Justice 137", part of the DOJ prisoner transport program. Don't know if they were picking up, dropping off, or just getting gas.

This is what happened today:
All the planes that were supposed to come in came in, but the times were a little off.
David Windmiller flew a couple of times (where is he parked)?
The Golden Knights made a flight.
According to the signs near the main terminal you can meet the Thunderbirds Friday at 2PM
I got to meet Thunderbirds #3 and #8 8)

If I'm not mistaken, Dave is BASED at FRG so he would be in his own hangar.
Now...I got out a bit early today and made it to FRG to grab a few shots...
first two are from Tuesday when the weather was horrible...or so you thought (I love it)

He may, it's not a SKYTYPER exclusive hanger, it's just right there next to 109 and I saw Dave's trailer right next to the Skytyper's trailer.
I thought he was from out east though.
Ok, thanks Tim, I heard John Klatt is there, is that true.
No, John had to cancel this year. I'm not 100% but I think I remember him saying last year that he was headed back to the middle east flying an F-16 and was going to miss the air show season this year. If you go on his website, it hasn't been updated for this year yet

Not necessarily - they did bring 2 two-seaters in, and one was still not on the ramp today. This morning, the D-model on the ramp had no number on the intake, so it's likely that's the one that they put the #8 on.

My guess is that they're seeing Ed Hamil's Air Force Reserve Bi-Plane and confusing it for John Klatt's Air Guard Staudacher 300.
I wish John was here this year, it doesn't seem quite the same wihtout him taking the News people up all week. He's one of my personal fav's in terms of civilian aviators but like I said, I think he's overseas defending freedom.

The Thunderbirds did not have the meet and greet but after their debrief they came to the main terminal for pictures and autographs
Later today 2 Navy jets came I dont know what type of plane it is but they are both parked near sheltair (They look like a Learjet but just not the same)

No, two T-45s came in around 4:45 or so. The first was Rocket 4-0-5 who did a fast flyby on 1-9 then banked west and did a flyby
past the Tower then landed 1-4. The second one, Rocket 4-0-6 came about 15 minutes later normally (LOL) on 1-4. Both are at Sheltair.

The sun was very strong. I lathered up pretty good and still got a little red on my face. Of course being there for almost
six hours didnt help. The next two days should be cooler so bring a jacket or extra shirt. Even today with the sun out there

Today the Knights dropped at 9:15 and the Snowbirds came on at 10:30 so add an hour or so to both of those time

Yup. I've gone from the beach to where I live and it could be a 10 degree difference. Another time I left my house it was
sunny and clear and as soon as I passed Merrick Road it was near zero visibilty. But at least it was sunny and clear.

I went to the AAM today and they made it nice, here is some info:
Golden Knights departed
Team Oracle departed
F/A-18 Demo departed
Thunderbirds #1-7 departed at 11AM and #8 departed later
A USAF C-17 from McGuire came as the Thunderbirds support aircraft
Various planes from the Warbirds over long island, AAM and the Yankee lady came, they were offering rides on the B-17
Republic Airport was having trouble with the air traffic and had to temporarily shut down
I dont know how accurate this is but I heard some of the A-10 East guys saying they will depart Tuesday at 10AM

Republic Airport was having trouble with the air traffic and had to temporarily shut down
The "trouble" they were having was the C-17 parked on Rwy 1/19 near the terminal loading the T-Birds' gear, and the Ops guys removing the temporary arresting cable on 14/32 after the last T-Bird departed, so neither runway was available for a short time. Rwy 14/32 was re-opened in about 10 minutes, and shortly after that, the C-17 departed on Rwy 1.

When I arrived by the terminal at 10:30 one of the TBirds had already left. Six of the ships departed off of 1-4 with a break to the SW. One of them really kept it low on the deck before going up. Tbird 4 stayed until about 1:30 as they were letting people look at the jet. He left 1-4 also. Lots of the Warbirds flying today and that was pretty cool. Also cool was finally meeting John (Moose) after the TBirds left. It was funny as we both got caught short when the C-17 came in. He was told they wouldnt be in until 1:30 so while getting some food he spies them coming on final to 3-2. I was down by the movie theater on Conklin when I heard Thunderbird 1-4 on the scanner being cleared to 3-2. So I headed for the Terminal as they taxied in. They stopped just short of coming directly onto the Terminal tarmac, a crew member came out to talk with a TBird crew member then they turned and parked on Runway 1. They finally headed out off of Runway 1 at 2:35. That was really great seeing that big bird here at FRG.
Also soon after the Thunderbirds departed the two Rocket T-39s and the two Rocket T-45s also departed off of 3-2.
And the last I saw when I left both Hornets were still sitting at Sheltair and according to Moose the rumor was they
would depart tomorrow at 3PM.
And 1-4/3-2 wasnt closed that long as the crew expedited removing the cables though it did make some anxious moments for a few pilots who were caught short when the airport suddenly closed.
And finally kudos to my scanner. As I sit here it finally is beeping that the batteries need to be charged. I had it on yesterday for a good 7 hours straight and today 6 hours.
Plus when John finally gets a chance we are going to see some great photos from todays activities.

Colorado Springs for the Graduation then a short jump to South Dakota for next weekends show.
Memorial Day Weekend in NY is Magical to me, but talking about an entire weekend could take a lifetime. This is about 1 hour.
Backround-
Wanting to see Bill Reesman fly his Red Bull Mig-17, I had no idea how much impact it could really have on me. It started
when I walked up the Bill on the ramp when he arrived Monday before airshow weekend. I was talking to him about the
unknown “penny” on the T-6. After looking at my shots on one of my personal books I made, we talked about when he
used to shoot medium format photography and loved to make sure people were not in his shots. I was telling him how I
loved night photography. A few days later I was with my best friend Moose (John Musolino) and asked if it was possible to
do a flyby of the old control tower during the airshow. Bill told Moose and I that he can not put extra fuel in as per the
show, he needs to be almost empty for the routine and can not do any flybys after as he is always running low. After a
good nights rest, Bill stops by and was telling my how much he admired my shots on my website and to say I was HONORED
was the proverbial understatement of the year. This guy looks at pro's shooting airshows of his aircraft all the time and
stopped by when he was very busy and rushed prepping for an airshow to tell me how much he admired the shots on my
site. So now when we fast forward a few days,
AIRSHOW SUNDAY
He's getting ready to for airshow and starts the engines and lets it run for about 1 1/2 minute when he shuts down. I am
now really bummed as this Sexy Screaming little red flaming Mig is just eye candy for me and it seems it is not going
anywhere. I really wanted to see the burner flames as he roars down the runway again. Then I found that EVERYTHING HAS
STOPPED due to bad weather at the airshow. I now had time to go downstairs to the SheltAir FBO where my friend Lionel
always allows me to enjoy the AC and some popcorn with a fresh cup of the best coffee you ever had. I spoke with the A-
10 Demo team pilot there who told me the bad news.... NO VISIBILTIY at the beach and it looked like the airshow may be
over. At that time my very good friend Paul F Who flys the Harvard (T-6 Texan) Dazzlin Deb calls me to tell me that he is
going to do three flybys along with the American Airpower Museum’s T-6 flown by Ryan to keep the crowd at the Museum
going. He asked me if there was anything I needed and replyed asking him to dip the wing for me. As always, Paul Smiled as
I could see it thru the phone.

Paul F. and his Harvard
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/546316199_4xxLf-L-1.jpg
Ryan and the AAM's T-6
Now that the passes were done, I see Bill getting into his Parashoot in RECORD TIME and he Started the Mig and was
starting to taxi in like 30 seconds.... He turns on to the active and does a nice rolling start and lays on the burner and he is
gone leaving the earth quivering into submission. Man that thing is LOUD!
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/photos/546316512_QHiJW-L-1.jpg
After a while at Jones Beach, Bill comes back and starts his downwind. As I broke my other lens earlier during the airshow
and my best friend Moose had lent me his Canon 70-200 2.8L $1300.00 lens (LOT OF LOVE THERE as my cheap lens is only
worth about $130!) I could not wait for Bill to give me a great smoky touchdown shot as he says he PLANTS the aircraft
hard to kill 10kts immediately.......THEN HE DOES IT!

(look at how many people are watching....and is he doing this for me????)
HOLY CRAP, I COULD NOT BELEVE IT....THE NEXT DAY I still could not believe it, and still today can not. I must have
taken about 30 shots of the flyby and EVERY shot was CRYSTAL CLEAR! Mooses lens, My 40D camera THE PLANE!!!! My
True love will always be big round motors and the air-cooled redundancy of being able to loose a cylinder and still get the
pilot home. Hearing a cylinder fire, then 3 then 6 and then feeling the shutter of the rpms as all 9 cylinders roars to takeoff
power of a T-6/SNJ/Harvard is just music to my ears...but the Mig is just a screamer….but only until the burners are lit, the
it SHAKES THE WORLD. This is just 1 hour of a weekend that will be forever etched in my memory. Great friends and their
awesome toys! I still shake my head in disbelief.
There are a million more stories of big round motors and Magic from this weekend alone, but this stuff only happens at the
AAM. I do not write often as I am not good with words....but you can always check my website for my many fun pictures
of the adventures that Paul, Moose, Larry, Gary, Jim, Chris, Scott, Frank, Fred ...... and my new friend Bill Reesman take me
on.
But ONLY at the American Airpower Museum.....the Where History Flys!
(sorry Gary…. I had to say it!)
Dedicated to Bob, as he touched the face of God practicing for this airshow.

A few single Snowbirds flew out earlier then around noon the last 8 Snowbirds flew out. They took off in pairs and joined up just East of the airport and did one final flyover before turning North and heading to Kingston.
What a bunch of class acts. I can't wait to see them in Rhode Island.

In the thick of the fog I get to the office today around 1145am and what do I see taxiing away from the main terminal... 05-1436... C-130 from the RI Air National Guard, callsign was "Mooney 1" and he blasted off Rwy 14. Based on the conversation I heard, it had something to do with airshow equipment as the tower thanked them for visiting, and they said..."Yep, see ya next year."

Just an update to this question, yes Talon Air does now manage N818KC - Challenger 300.
The owners got burned in the JetDirect bankruptcy, and wanted to stay in FRG. They felt Talon was their best option of who was left.
http://www.talonairjets.com/site/#/fleet/1/
Thanks. I know their site and planes but the Challenger is not listed and I have never seen it. That is why i was asking
It could be an error on FA.

I'm not 100% but I think they were there to pick up the arresting gear. They took it apart yesterday and brought it over to the main terminal where they had a whole bunch of Airforce equip staged. It was probably on loan form R.I. ANG.
Did the A-10's get out today? If so, anybody have any parting shots of them?

As an interesting note on the "Sabreliners" at least one crew or at least the one that I met was 3/4 German. Three out of four were actually from the German Air Force and the lady from the crew was a stone cold stunner. :borat: Also had the pleasure of meeting and spending a breif time with the crews of the T45's in town. Great gang from the Navy/USMC all together.

Yea, he keeps sending parts to Italy I think. I have seen it for years and have taken many shots of the engine runups but never a flight. I think it is one of 3 left and the only one flying.....well now I can say that without following up with a WELL....KIND OF!
He was just flying right around the airport and did not go far at all just in case.... I do not blame him, but I long to see that doing a flyby at the beach. Then I will be truly happy that he has shaken that thing out. 8)

They are gearing up for the US Open. Both Sheltair & Atlantic have a line-up of Lexus SUV's & luxury sedans just awaiting to be picked up. Expect tomorrow & Monday the 8th to have quite a bit of biz-traffic in FRG.
Surprisingly, it's rather calm at FRG today (Saturday). usually the day of the Belmont Stakes, Atlantic's ramp is so full you can barely move. There are a few aircraft here, but a lot less than I would have expected.

Belmont Park has a registered helipad 4NY9. It is used as a soccer field most of the year, they paint the helipad lines a week before Stakes Day. This year's Stakes Day was actually not that bad, we had 50,000 patrons as of 4pm and the final count may be close to 70,000. There was a flyover around 10am, I missed it as I was getting my 25 EMTs and 10 Paramedics deployed throughout the Park. Belmont actually offers some great spotting sites for the JFK 22s. If anyone is ever interested in a tour of the facility or wants hassle free spotting access just lemme know.
