Matt, I got there and they started #2 engine within 5 minutes! The nose gear light was the 1/2 second flash they give the marshaller to indicate they are about to roll. Was just the right amount of time to make it all work.

There is an all white MD-83 w/black tail (N949NS) sitting on the back ramp of Atlantic along with a Miami Air 737. One of them is the Sabres NHL charter.

moose135
2012-02-04, 06:40 PM
The MD-83 is a USA Jet, arrived from Buffalo on Friday night, so I assume it's the Sabres ride. The Miami Air 737 arrived from Ottawa about 1am this morning, following the Islander game against the Senators. Depending on their schedule, they may be waiting on crew rest before the can depart. The Isles play in Philly on Tuesday, so I guess the jet could be spending a couple of days here before that trip, but I don't know if they would do something like that.

WOW! Do you have any more shots like this?! This is one of my favorite shows & I didn't even realize they filmed anything at FRG, wish I could have snuck in just to watch some of the filming. I saw Drew Barrymore when I worked at AP and she was filming there (back in '09), it's pretty neat to see the screens of those professional cameras!

The above pictures are from a studio in Bklyn (I believe). The two times they filmed at FRG they filmed on the tarmac by the AAM and even that was pretty much closed to all. Hell if Fred couldnt get it NO ONE could!!!

Actually, they are from the Grumman Studios in Bethpage. They do film in the Steiner Studios, at the old Brooklyn Navy Yard, but used Grumman for the large green-screen work show. I did get to see some of the filming at FRG, BTW...

Also at Republic today, the television show Unforgettable was filming scenes for an upcoming episode. I haven't seen it, but it's a cop show starring Poppy Montgomery. They filmed some inside SheltAir, and spent a good part of the day shooting on one of the runways. The set up for the scene has a suspect trying to escape in a small aircraft, and the cops drive alongside the plane on the runway and shoot out the nose wheel tire, forcing it to stop (I know, I know...) They went up and down the runway a bunch, with the plane (a Cessna Caravan) and the detectives' car (a Dodge Charger) followed by a camera truck.

Nice, John! It's probably just a training mission. They have to get a certain amount of hours/sorties each month. If the pilot has friends/family in the area, or just wants a weekend in NY, they check out a jet, get a couple of hops in, and spend the weekend.

Wow thats what i heard. Was watching TV and heard the roar. Came in on One-Four?

Yes, he came in on 14. I was sitting at my desk and heard a distinct roar, it took a second to realize what that screaming sound was, only a second. I ran outside to see him almost overhead, heading towards the south side of the tower. He passed the tower and then headed North, maybe 1/4 mile past Conklin. He then made a hard left turn so that he was flying on his side and made a wide sweeping turn to align himself with runway 14. A few seconds later he landed. I debated for a second if I had the time to run back in and get my camera, instead I just watched come in, which was nice for a change as I see most exciting things through the viewfinder on my camera.

Nice shots John, here are a few that I took from the other side of the fence:
http://joeogden.net/planes/IMG_8936a 1024.JPG

and one of the Equine plane that came in on Wednesday:
http://joeogden.net/planes/IMG_8948a 1024.JPG

Unfortunately, I do not have access to the other side of the fence. I tried taking a few night shots, they didn't come out very well. The plane was in a dark spot so it was difficult to focus on.

Fred, along with several others were next to me by the tower, when the jet's engines started, everyone took off like a bat out of hell, where did everyone go? Is there a better location to get shots from this side? as the angle didn't seem too much different on your shots.

My son forgot his jacket and had a hoodie on.... It was cool out and I did not want him to get a cold. We went by the Skytypers airplanes. I did not want him out of the car until they started engines. We went just inside the fence as I do not have a truck to stand on anymore! lol.... You would have gotten about the same shots as we were about the same distance from the airplane.

A little white Navy jet with a red tail landed about 40 minutes ago if anyone's interested. It's parked by Shelt air. Sorry for the lame description, i am running out as I would like to get a few shots before it gets dark. There were a few of them here last year for the air show, though they did not fly in the show and were kind of in the same spot that they are in now.

They (USCG) stop by in spurts, there was one in 3 days this past week.
And they are not consistent, some times they go to Sheltair, sometimes Atlantic.
Either way, they seem to always stop by around lunchtime. Hey, they gotta eat too.

Here is one from Sept 2011 over at Sheltair

While not 100% positive, I thought that I heard the T-45 take off around 1 PM. I was several miles away and thought that I heard the distinct sound, although I could be wrong. Anyway, I just drove by Sheltair, and didn't see the T-45, however it was very crowded with good sized Lear jets and Gulfstreams. Also, the museums B-25 was still at the museum with a small crowd around it. This was about ten minutes ago at 3:40 PM.

Helicopter was N355CS, a Twin Star. Supposedly the pilot and her husband have 2 such ships and have started up a helicopter charter service.

So apparently my second time out trying to begin a new hobby has already got me discouraged because I can pose "a danger to homeland security" according to a State Trooper. I was over by Talon Air coming in from rt. 109 and took a few shots of Miami Air and pulled over by the gate near Talon to take a few pics of 2 jets they had running and some sort of filming taking place in the hanger, not sure whats going on with that when before I even got out of the car a Trooper was telling me to leave, no filming or pictures allowed to be taken on airport property it can be a threat to homeland security. When I simply questioned where you are allowed to take pictures he asked are you allowed to take pictures at JFK, I said i had no idea this is a new hobby I see people taking pics all the time all over this place. He said over by the 56th is ok. So can some pro's school me on the do's and donts to picture taking here. On the map, the red dot is where I was told to move from, blue he said is ok, yellow Im not sure about im guessing thats also off limits.

Okay, I see where he bothered you, and I can understand his reasoning for asking you to move, that is basically a blind corner which many people (especially the NYSPD) cut the corner. You are in a vulnerable spot, not easily seen...secondly, you are also sitting right next to the Jet-A refuel station. That is probably more of the concern, not that you were taking pictures, but because you were stopped by a very...let's say...suspicious area.

Like Nick said, go over the the parking area between the terminal and the 56th, and have at it. I shoot there all the time, and have never been bothered, and believe me, the controllers in the tower can see you, so if they wanted to bust chops and have people moved, they could get it done easily.

Check out the FRG spotting guide on the main site, and you'll have no issues. And DONT stop shooting! Remember if those planes are running, they have to taxi and takeoff somewhere. :)

I find it interesting - but not surprising - that he told you that taking pictures on airport property was a threat to security, then told you to go over by the terminal to shoot...

The spot by Talon is tight, and yes, the troopers are probably the worst about driving too fast through there. I've grabbed a couple of quick shots over that way, but there usually isn't much of interest. The other spot you noted - the yellow dot on your map - gives a decent shot at the sports charters parked down that end. The problem is there is no parking along that section of the road. You either need to park further down and walk back, or pull onto the shoulder, jump out and shoot, and drive off. Not that I would ever do anything like that...

You will usually find plenty of people over by the lot near between 56th and the terminal. It's a good spot to eat lunch and watch the airplanes, and not bad for shooting.

Yeah thats an area the Troopers are always going through since their barracks are located right there. I've never had a problem shooting there but usually its quick and out with one eye watching for the Troopers. But usually they are speeding so fast they might not even see you. You probably just ran into the one pain in the butt officer. Or maybe you look like an Iranian?:rolleyes:

Hopefully we get an ETA for Sunday so I know where I will be.

FYI- A public alert was posted in Newsday today, that two Blue Angel jets will be departing Republic Airport on Monday, April 2nd, between 9:30 and 11AM to do a familiarization flight over the Hudson River corridor in NY Harbor for their upcoming flyover in May to celebrate the Bicentennial of the War of 1812. During the Monday flight, the two F/A-18 Hornets will conduct passes over the Hudson, turning south of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and north of the George Washington Bridge at altitudes as low as 500 feet and and at speeds of about 345 mph, the Navy said.

No ETA for them on Sunday evening yet, BUT the weather forecast is looking ALOT better for Monday anyway. I'll be over at FRG on Mon. and hope others can get shots of the BLUES in NYC over the Hudson also

2012-04-01, 12:59 PM
Nothing official yet. They are performing at the Tuscaloosa Air Show, and according to the show schedule, they go on at 3pm - Central Time. Figure they are done by 4pm Central, and at best, an hour to fuel the jets and prep for take off. It's about 900 miles (straight line) from Tuscaloosa to Farmingdale, figure 3 hours flight time, that puts them here at 9pm Eastern. In the end, your guess is as good as mine...

If thats the samejet they are using after Sundays game at MSG must have repositioned to EWR or LGA.

If thats the samejet they are using after Sundays game at MSG must have repositioned to EWR or LGA.

They fly the Bruins, Sabres and one other team this year (the name escapes me) so they probably went to where ever it was needed next.
Doubt they would sit at EWR or LGA and incur those parking fees for 3 days.

So far so good with the viewing through the fence. Though instead of standing on grass you have to stand on a ledge as the grass is all gone. And the parking lot has reopened so you can sit there and still get good views of Runway 1/19.
And hopefully we got all this wet weather out of the way. Less than 2 weeks before all the activity starts to crank up!!

im sure they will blame it on the amount of people standing up there trying to peek over the fence .. when it really prob has to do with all the rain and improper drainage

If you are around FRG the next week or so, you may see the red Waco biplane out and about. They installed the new engine, and today got everything tuned up and running smoothly. They have to put a number of hours (25, I think) droning around before they can carry passengers, so Jim will probably be out making orbits over the airport.

Who were the flight of 2 Warbirds that blasted over my house around 5:55PM heading to the North? They were flying low and need to be reported as I almost tripped over my dogs running out the door to check them out!! LMAO!!! It was one of the big boys and a fighter!! Got a quick glimpse as they headed out!!

[QUOTE=Fighting_falcon_51;470941]There was some semi-interesting stuff going on at FRG today. Sorry about the crappy heat hazed quality of the photographs.
When I pulled up I saw N35WM next to the AWOS and a black van next to the plane with men coming out of it:

Gerard, the Geneseo Air Show is this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and from their web site, the AAM is sending their P-40 and P-47. I know they were planning to send the C-47 down to NJ for its annual inspection today, maybe you saw some of those departures.

The C-47 and P-40 departed around that time Gerard. I did not see the P-47 leave, but then again, I was working.

With the Barclay's PGA stop in town, FRG has been a little busier than normal with the bizjets. Here are a few from today, along with two military visitors as well, no E-2 though :(

Fred , since it was "Tiger One", was it VAW-125's CAG Bird by chance ?

Joe good to see you too. Nice shots. Will post some of mine later. Crew made it easy with the passes.

Chris it is from VAW-125 but it has LCMDR and LT markings so I don't think it is the CAG.

Funny thing after they made the there 2nd pass the tower asked , "Tiger 1 what are your intentions?". To which they answered, "To land?". Sounded like the tower had no idea that they were coming in.

They are parked behind Sheltaire tough to get a good look wit all the business jets. Nobody seemed to know when they are leaving

yeah, they couldnt have put this in a worse spot for spotters (could be intentional). Usually Fred or someone "in the know" gives us a heads up, but maybe folks at the airport were left out of the loop on this one

BTW, Great job by the Metlife Blimp and the Golf Channel broadcasting the whole takeoff
of the E-2 at FRG a few minutes ago just before they went to a TV break !!
I wish I could have recorded it !!

Edit:
I just noticed the Golf Channel might be replaying it's Golf coverage from this afternoon
from 8:30 - 12:30 tonight, and if so keep an eye out for the E-2 takeoff just after midnight.

Was over by the Sheltair lot this afternoon as the stormy weather made a beeline straight at us. The tarmac was busy with aircraft loading up to head out. Looked like it was Barclays related also. Around 1:55 a number of jets wanted to get out before the rain hit, but it was too late. In fact one jet was inbound just as the rain came down and switched from 19 to 14 but looked like he was too high over the numbers of 14 so he decided to go around. A second jet on 19 did the same. There were 5 aircraft waiting to depart, idling in different locations, when around 2:15 Tower began to give clearances to them, slowly.

A Navy Sabreliner T-39 came in this afternoon and is over by Sheltair. Looks like it might be here for a few day(s). Wanted to land 14 but that was closed so they came in 19. What was going on with 14? Maintenance?

I know this probably isn't the right place to post this but this plane looked like it was coming from FRG's direction. At 6:30pm tonight a very large completely dark military grey plane with 4 engines passed over my location on woodbury rd. in hicksville headed NW direction towards JFK or which ever airport uses that normal route all day. Did anyone get a look at it, im thinking a C5?
