We are the same group of people who complain when we get kicked off of public property shooting, and find every excuse we can to get aviation information. Isn't this secret sharades thing a tad silly? We all know it is a privately held part 91 Boeing 707 with a 121 scheme already on it. Only one of those around. If this was supposed to be secret, the folks at SheltAir wouldnt say anything about it and it wouldnt be dribbled all over the internet.

When I was over at FRG on Friday for the EA-6B I saw 2 sets of photographers. 1 set was in a yellow mick-up near the end of the runway, and the other set was on the very corner of where the small planes are parked about midway down the runway .. either of those groups Fred or Moose? I was standing in the back of a grey Pick up on New Highway.

Today we heard through the grapevine that Pan Am will be returning to the Republic Airport (http://www.republicairport.net/) in Long Island next week. The show spent several days earlier this year filming the “Cuba” scenes from the pilot episode at the airport as well.
But, this time the shoot sounds even more intriguing because we’ve also heard they will be using a Boeing 707 owned by John Travolta in the scenes! From what we understand, it sounds like they will cover the plane in a vinyl wrap to give it the famous Pan Am markings, without having to actually paint it.
Filming is scheduled to take place Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday night and rumor has it this time the airport will fill in for Haiti.

I read mechanical issues kept the plane from coming in last night. Lets hope we can get a warning before its due into FRG so we can catch it.

Just wondering as I am not familiar with take off requirements for the 707 but isn't that airplane a little "big" for KFRG's runway?

ch2tdriver
2011-10-24, 11:32 AM
FRG's 14-32 is 6800' long and can handle the 707. FRG's issue....at least until the taxiway improvement project is done (if it's not already)...is the narrow taxiways and lack of clearance space. But it will probably be towed to parking from 1-19 after clearing 14-32. That is assuming they are filming over by the AAM?

What I am wondering is that for these "Haiti" scenes why not just use ISP? The old 40's era hangars at the west side would be a good stand, as they're very rustic looking nowadays. Also I think ISP is a bit more secure for keeping the unwashed masses away, plus JT has used the Excel Ramp right there before as we all know.

From what I can see (just my opinion).............the bird has plenty of room. RWY 32-14 is 6833' x 150', and given the fact it doesn't carry passengers and baggage like in the olden days, the birds take-off weight would be far less.

I wonder what reg ID they are going to slap on the aircraft .... N707PA????

I don't know, but like you suggest, that is certainly possible. Although it does have a history of extended idle time between assignments, but generally that is done in Florida. Perhaps they're committed to someone else this week...who knows. I hope it will be around for awhile longer with its new "bandit mask" livery.

Reading the warbird forum site regarding ABC/Pan Am looking for just the right airframe, I felt bad the guy was directed towards at least half dozen airframes without engines, or in some cases broken up years ago, not to mention tankers and cargo examples in the developing world. Not to disparage their knowledge otherwise, because they referenced a wealth of 707 information, but with exception of about one single post, they just seemed to miss the most obviously appropriate example. But N707JT will be a close enough approximation considering how little is out there...

Tom, interesting post. When you think about it, ZL would probably be a much more accurate option since the 138 was only flown by QF but I think only us geeks would notice that little aspect. Not to mention, ZL has the last version of that engine which if I am not mistaken doesnt have those "air vents"

PhilDernerJr
2011-10-24, 06:43 PM
Just throwing it out there, there would be a limitation for that aircraft. Have N88ZL ever been to FRG? Is it noise compliant? Does a different engine variation limit its ability to operate in and out of FRG? Cost or quality of repaint too expensive from the rich charter? There could be many variables that we don't see.

Maybe Travolta gave them the Friends & Family discount since "Kotter" used to be on ABC.
And the way the rating are falling for "Pan Am" we might not see much more of this so enjoy.

Well, he's definitely an airliner fan. He owned a Constellation prior to purchasing this 707. Interestingly, before he had the deal whereby the Qantas livery was applied, he had a TWA star stream cheatline applied to the fuselage (but in blue).

Had to post up on my "mission" to see this baby come in and just add my two cents.

Some planes you look at and enjoy..maybe take your pictures then move on. Some, however capture your imagination and you just want to walk around the thing and not leave. This 707 is one of those for me. What an absolutely gorgeous aircraft in every way.

I chuckled a little when I read this. Somebody's phone is going to be ringing off the hook when that beauty finally leaves. I just hope I'm at the end of the ruway when it does!

This reminds me of driving by the PA maintenance hangar at JFK (Pre 9/11) and seeing a 707 they had dressed up to re-create the 25th anniversary of the 707's inaugural flight to Paris.

It also reminds me of sitting in the rooftop parking lot of the Pan Am Worldport and watching their 707's leave JFK on their way to the dessert. (I believe they were sold to the Air Force to be used for parts for the KC-135's). They were using the callsign BOEING ***Papa Alfa.

Soo.....they gave it a reg that used to belong to a Cessna...

http://www.airport-data.com/aircraft/N1703D.html

Do they need FAA approval for a reg or can they just slap any old reg on as long as there's no engine starts/taxi/takeoffs

Great shots Manny

Just a heads up, Kalitta 727 is planned for arrival just before 2pm. I wonder if it will be "Tex Sutton" livery?

In any event, and 727 and 707 together at FRG... doesn't get much better than that.

Tom, nice find. Pretty cool!

Yes, I thoguht that was a Shorts type Ac this morning. I think I read that this episode would make Republic the scene of Haiti in the 1960/70s, probably to look at the rise of the Duvalier regime. So my assumption is that the Shorts/Sherpa looking prop was also used in the shoot?

Very cool. I recently learned that my grandfather was the photographer for the President of Haiti back in the day. Its in the genes!

Well, it is forecast to only be raining with winds about half that amount at the ETD, so they may escape before all the nasty stuff moves in. I'm hoping not, or that they have another mechanical before they take off, though

No that airframe is blocked on the trackers. Judging by the radar if they don't go in the next hour or so they will have some much heavier rains and maybe more wind. It won't be pretty out there.

How's this for our "sleepy" little airport. At 1am last night, on the ground was N707JT - the beloved 707, N725KS - the Tex Sutton horse charter 727, AND N724YS - another 727-200 bringing the San Jose Sharks hockey team in to play the Islanders. Too bad that one did a dump and run over to EWR. Bill, any shots yet???

It was a lot of fun but damn was it nasty out. Cold and rainy and then started to snow as they taxied to 14. Looked like they were having a little difficulty hooking up the tug line to position
the plane to the taxiway. And they were given the "Cleared for Takeoff" as soon as they got in position. It was funny as everyone raced out of the AAM parking lot to get ourselves in
position. Too bad the ceiling was so low as they disappeared pretty much as they crossed the numbers of 32 but still was pretty AWESOME!!

Great shots everybody & Derf love the departure video, especially the AWESOME sound effects. One thing that impressed me in terms of the shows attention to detail is the fake windows as part of the plastic covering since N707JT is missing quite a few windows. Now two unrealted questions. Since I am only vaguely familiar with FRQ approx what percentage of the runway would those familiar say the Boeing used to get airborne? Second question since the tail could not be covered because of some kind of rudder re-balancing afterwords anyone here if they are going to use computer graphics for an accurate Pan Am tail or if they are just going to not have the tail in the actual shots? Sure looking forward to that episode !

That's a 6800 foot runway, Ron, and it looks like they used about half of it. Not sure about the tail - I heard it wouldn't appear in any shots, but I also heard mention that they would CGI it if necessary. This was listed as Episode 8 on their schedule, but they have already swapped the order of two episodes earlier this season, so I wouldn't necessarily rely on the episode number to determine when it will run.

Even with the most advanced CGI or animatronics you can still tell it's not real. Having the actual aircraft with the color scheme and a talented filming crew can give you a much more realistic effect. IMO.

It's probably cheaper and easier in the long run to bring the 707 here. Yes, they paid for it, but compared to flying 150 people (actors, extras, production people, etc.) down to Florida for three or four days, plus all their equipment (cameras, sound equipment, lights, etc., etc.) it can get pretty pricey as well. Add to that losing two days with travel - since they usually film in Brooklyn, most of the crew met at the studio, and were shuttled to FRG on the first day of shooting. They did stay in local hotels during filming. They have shot some other scenes around the NYC area (the hotel in "Monte Carlo" last week was actually the Woolworth Mansion in Glen Cove) so local location shoots are something they are familiar with. Logistically and financially, it's a lot easier to bring the airplane here then move the whole circus to the airplane.

That's an EA-6B Prowler. And yes, it will still be around - it was retired out of service a week ago with its final flight into FRG. It will remain at the Airpower Museum until a display site is ready at the Grumman Bethpage plant.

The registration, N606MG gives us a few clues...it is registered to Hagedorn Aviation, based in Delaware - no surprise there. If you Google "Hagedorn Aviation", the first result is a Wikipedia page for "James Hagedorn" that starts "...was named president and chief operating officer of Scotts Miracle-Gro in April 2000 and chairman of the board of directors and chief executive officer in January 2003. Prior to April 2000, he was in charge of the company's North American business." It also has this to say about Mr. Hagedorn... "Hagedorn also served in the United States Air Force for seven years as a captain and an F-16 fighter pilot."

Surprised so quick but the episode of Pan Am filmed with N707JT at FRG is already airing this Sunday night 11-13-2011 at 2200 on ABC-TV, here is a brief description of the episode.

A wealthy passenger charms the stewardesses on a flight to Caracas; when a passenger has a heart attack, the only hope of saving him is to land in turmoil-stricken Haiti.

Around 3:30 a Falcon 2000, N255QS, was rolling on One Nine to depart when they had to abort the takeoff about halfway down. I wasnt in the car but watching by the green fence by Dave & Busters so i didnt have my scanner. They taxied back to the Atlantic ramp where they remained at idle and the FRG Ops Truck met them. I believe it was a bird strike as Tower was telling
departures of "bird activity" in the area.

Oh boy, I finally get to post something before anyone else!! So excited.

A pair of Superhornets just arrived at FRG. They flew over me at 10:10, low pass over the airport, gear up, no flaps.

Turned right and looped around again. Full flaps gear extended.

Flight aware shows them delayed until 10:18, so unfortunately that doesn't seem to be very accurate. I checked it earlier and it didn't mention that flight, unless something else showed up in the night that we were unaware of?

Military flights don't show up on FlightAware, but I see what you were looking at - that's really odd. Someone must have made a typo when entering the flight plan and never deleted it.

Not the greatest shot, I was checking out Flight Aware and saw that it was due in any second, so I ran out front and took the shot. This is the view from my front yard. If I had more time, I would have liked to have caught it landing. I had a 28-135mm lens on the camera otherwise it would have been zoomed in closer. It's just not an angle seen much in photos.

The NHL schedule tells me it was likely the Boston Bruins arriving Friday and departing Sunday, for their game with the Islanders on Saturday. They then had a game with the Canadiens on Monday.

Joe, that Delta jet was probably bringing the Flyers in for tomorrow's game.

Looks like he left a little late. At around 4:15, while getting some fresh air outside my office in Melville, I happened to look up and see an F-18 departing FRG northbound along Rt. 110. He was moving really fast and disappeared into the cloud layer in less than a minute! (Do these guys need to abide by the 250 kt limit?)

moose135
2011-11-30, 06:18 PM
Yes, they went off late - by then, the clouds had moved in pretty well. And no, they don't have to follow the 250kt limit if operational requirements dictate otherwise. When I flew the T-38, our normal cruise speed was 300kt IAS, and we always flew that speed in normal operations.

A few from earlier today

So that was you taking the pics. I was on the other side of the fence. This was on the tarmac between Hangar 41 and Northeastern.
NYPD had three Agustas (15, 16 and 19) and Aviation 14 which was also used as the VIP transport copter. Suffolk 2 and Nassau 5 rounded
out the group. They left off the Bravo pad one at a time to the south a little after 12 then met up over the Great South Bay where they lined
up into the Fly Over formation and circled slowly for about 35/40 minute. After they finished the Fly By Suffolk and Nassau were cut loose
and the 4 NYPD copters returned to FRG where they shutdown on the back Atlantic ramp. They refueled and after the Mayor and PC arrived
for their ride home on PD 14 the 3 Agustas also cranked up and headed out to the SW.
It was pretty cool seeing all of this but I felt conflicted because the only reason they were there was because of the murder of a good PO and and even better family man. :frown:

They have did work to all the lights in that lot. Probably more upkeep on the lot. I doubt that is airport related.

Yes it is, Kenny. It is part of the changes they are making to the runway safety area - Runway 1/19 will be shifted northward approximately 450' to give additional overrun on the south end before Rt. 109, and part of the parking lot near D&B will be closed off to provide a safe zone on the north end, as the threshold will be moved north. They will be installing an EMAS system on the Rt. 110 end of 14/32, and installing upgraded approach lights for Rwy 14. Since they have room to shift 1/19, they won't need to install EMAS on that runway.

You can read about it here:
http://www.republicairport.net/Relocation-of-RunwayAirport-Safety-Project.htm

And this brochure includes a map with the changes (to the runway, as well as the parking lot) marked:

Some of the non-runway items noted are still in the "planning stage" and may or may not happen. As far as we know, the AAM isn't going anywhere. In the original plan, the hangar would have been moved south of the current SheltAir hangar to keep it out of the shifted RSA. In March of this year, the FAA agreed to allow it to remain in place for the foreseeable future. I haven't heard any news about the other hangar which the diagram shows as being removed - the small hangar north of the AAM, which houses NFI, and which is actually older than the AAM building. SheltAir's main hangar would remain in place, and parking that is currently north of it would move to the south side. As noted, there is a plan to develop the Breaslau Gardens area (between Rwy 1 and 32), and the fuel farm, among other things, would be moved into that area. I haven't heard any solid updates on any of this non-runway related construction in months. I try to get down to the airport commission meetings, and if I hear anything, I'll pass it along.

Schumer and Israel made sure it would be preserved no matter if it stayed in the spot it's in or was moved. Then I thought I heard it was being moved to where the Alpha ramp is now which doesn't make a bit of sense. Going to be interesting. If they stay where they are now don't they lose ramp space?

On a somewhat related note, what ever happened to the Stew Leonards Store that was supposed to pop up around the airport? Where was is supposed to go? And was it squashed?

moose135
2011-12-28, 12:26 AM
Mario, as I understand it, the store was supposed to go on Rt. 110, on the southwest corner of Conklin Street. That would have put it directly under the approach path to Rwy 14. There was significant opposition from pilot groups and other local business and civic organizations over safety issues. As far as I know, it was killed.

In August I spoke with Stew Jr and he said that they are close to announcing a new location somewhere along Rt 110. Another time in either Sept or October my wife spoke to the store Mgr in Yonkers and he confirmed that we should be hearing something soon. Im looking forward to it as I travel to the Yonkers store about once a month

Keep an eye out Sunday night or Monday for the Detroit Red Wings new ride. The team plays the Islanders on Tuesday night, with a game in Chicago Sunday, then back home later in the week, so I'd expect them to drop into FRG and hang around for a day or two. The team unveiled a new jet for this hockey season, a former Midwest Express MD-81. Unfortunately, the new aircraft doesn't have Red Wings titles like their DC-9, just red and blue cheat lines and stripes on the tail. And it can be tracked...

No it wasn't. I got out there a little before 10am, and it was a quiet morning. Read that AG Eric Holder would attend the funeral, and thought we might get a VIP transport, but nothing showed up at FRG. Did hear an "Omaha" call sign, flight of 2, check in with FRG tower going into Bethpage a little after 10. I never heard anything else from them, but that's a Customer/Border Patrol call sign, so I assume they were funeral-related traffic.

Not sure if it was AG Holder or not, but a police led convoy of black SUVs rolled up to Atlantics ramp around 11ish and they got on a waiting civilian G5.

Thanks John. They must have used the Nassau Air Bureau Base for their staging point. News12 had a good video shot of the FlyBy which
featured 8 helicopters. Being the helo geek that i am I taped the story then played it back in slow-mo on my DVR. From what I saw it
looked to be the two Custom/Omaha Astars,. two Suffolk PD Astars, two Nassau PD 407s and two NYC PD Agustas. And they also said AG Holder was there.

Also at Republic today, the television show Unforgettable was filming scenes for an upcoming episode. I haven't seen it, but it's a cop show starring Poppy Montgomery. They filmed some inside SheltAir, and spent a good part of the day shooting on one of the runways. The set up for the scene has a suspect trying to escape in a small aircraft, and the cops drive alongside the plane on the runway and shoot out the nose wheel tire, forcing it to stop (I know, I know...) They went up and down the runway a bunch, with the plane (a Cessna Caravan) and the detectives' car (a Dodge Charger) followed by a camera truck.

Was in the area this aftertnoon and took a quick drive around FRG and I havent seen the ramps of Atlantic and Sheltair that empty in a long time. And with the crappy weather no one flying though I did see Bell N44HC fueling up. And speaking of him, around 3:30 I hear the loud buzz of an approaching copter and had a
pretty good idea who it was from the sound. It was 44HC flying about 500 feet over my house heading NB. Avoiding the last of the bad weather though it was brightening to the West. With the temps close to 55 I decided to go for a nice walk and who do I see again around 4PM now heading EB and around 1500 this time? 44HC of course.
