NEWARK -- An American Airlines jet bound for Chicago made an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport today when an engine failed shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport.

The plane, carrying 121 passengers and five crew members, landed safely and no one was hurt, said Ron Marsico, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the region’s three major airports.

The cause of the engine failure is under investigation and the Federal Aviation Administration was notified, said Tim Smith, a spokesman for American. Passengers were booked onto other flights, he said.

Smith said the McDonald Douglas MD-82 left LaGuardia just after 1 p.m., en route to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. But five minutes into the flight, at an altitude of about 2,000 feet, the left engine failed, Smith said. The crew declared an emergency, then landed at Newark, he said.
