If you attended last year and have an extra few minutes....can you post a few of your shots and a little blurb on what
you liked or disliked about the event. If you did not like something, I would love to hear as that is how we can try to make
things better. I would love to see some of your work...

I was there last year, and have to say again, the Museum staff is to be commended for their efforts in making this happen. There is not much to dislike. The only thing that made it a downer last year, and I completely understand why, was when they had to cover the canopies by 9:30pm. Other than that, you really can't complain with how that "night" is run.

Here are a few of mine from last year.

This is really an experience for anyone into aviation photography and like I mentioned in the other thread, the work that Fred and the great people at the American Airpower Museum is way more than evident. I encourage everyone to submit for an invitation. You won't regret it for one second. Here's a few from past years.

go to the first post in the thread and re-read the flyer fred posted. it explains all.

....can you post a few of your shots and a little blurb on what you liked or disliked about the event.

i'm proud to say i did this the first year it was offered and while my shots didn't come out nearly as good (lacked a good tripod then) as everyone else's i had a great time. dinner was great and i had a lot of fun shooting the night away with good friends. in all it was a wonderful night and if i were going to be around this summer i'd probably want to go again. fred, next year maybe.

Link or info on any published night photos such as magazines, Anet, jetphotos, Flicker, personal website etc...

Night photo links are a must as this is not a learning session for beginning nighttime photography. We are able to take
advantage of one night during the year and learning would needed to be done prior. If help is needed there are lots of people
on this site such as myself, Moose and many others that would take plenty of time to help with night time shooting.

This year will be too many people requesting to go, 6 previous attendee's will be there and 6 first timers. The only way in is to try and enter.

You can link Daytime aviation shots and Nighttime shots that are not aviation as most will not have the opportunity to shoot night aviation until attending.

If your not sure if your entry is ok, put questions in the email as I read them without reviewing the links. Links will be reviewed by me on the 1st as per the poster on the first post.

Any questions, please ask them on this forum as you have so we can make sure others with the same question will have an answer.

Ah alright. Hmm when do the select? as in what date?

May 1st is the Deadline, no other entry's will be counted after that. Selection is usually done within 24 hours and review is done with Moose during that time.... Emails are sent out
usually within 3 days for deadline.

TIME CHANGE!!!!!

I am very sorry to say that the times have changed for the History Under the Stars. The Time was from 8:30 to 11:30pm
but will now be from 7pm to 11pm. The reason for the change was not taken lightly but was made to afford all
photographers participating the opportunity to shoot a planned four ship flyby consisting of a B-17, B-25, P-47 and P-51
aircraft. While I am completely DEVISTATED by this news....IT GETS WORSE! The flyby is planned for sometime after 7PM
but before dark and could possibly be completely backlit making the possiblity of making it on Anet a 0% chance. You will
probably not want to even take your camera out and go into a corner and cry with Moose and myself. For those of you who
attempt to even try such a crappy shoot may possible get some crap like this...

http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/Aviation/2009-Jones-Beach-Airshow/IMG2142/548673394_nfgTH-L.jpg

It may get worse as time goes on and we may get some shots that are washed out and un appealing like this
http://www.longislandwallpapers.com/Aviation/2009-Jones-Beach-Airshow/IMG2182/546715925_p7quQ-L.jpg
(if you note the lack of detail and can not even make out the color of the plane....CRAP!!!!)

Just when you thought it could not get any worse.... they tell me the want to see if possible to get us in the old control
tower for the flyby, thus making me climb the stairs AGAIN!!!! and that should give us a new level of Crap Backlit shots
where we are closer to level with the aircraft.

Once again, I am soooo sorry for the inconvenience and if anyone wants to back out, Please let me know how you would like
the refund for the full amount paid. I think my wife will still mind me writing the check for $0.00 but WE ALL HAVE TO MAKE
SACRIFICES!

As in previous years, not all the applicants will be accepted :( sorry if you do not make it, But remember.... I try to keep everyone happy! :borat: Please Apply even if you feel that it is a lost cause. Send your best work! Ya NEVER KNOW!

I can't believe it is almost Christmas - I mean time for the AAM History Under the Stars again! Time Flies! (pun??)

I've been lucky enough to attend in the past, and have placed some of my shots on my gallery:

(And for those who know me, I DO stream all radio traffic from the planes and controllers online - so those with out scanners can enjoy the show from a different point of view).

Here are some shots from previous years. Again, more are in my gallery.

2010-04-22, 08:12 AM
We are over the allowable limit we set of 12, 6 returning and 6 new photographers. There is stiff competition. I have not see the quality of your night work, but like the lotto.... you need to be in it to win it. Will it be that hard to send a few night shots with a request? If you are questioning the quality of your work you will probably not make it....but there is only one way to find out. Try

thats my $ .02

Any hints or tricks for the night shoot as it is my first time... What type of glass do you guys bring, a wide is obvious but what about on the long end, 70-200, 300, 500 ???

I was think of straping some PWs onto some Canon flashes with some velco for a remote flash.... easy to share that way too.

Will we have access to our cars so we swap gear or should we loadup ??

Gonna need some Red Bulls after all day at the beach... have to miss Friday's practice at the beach but will be hanging at FRG later (New Highway Fence) and hopefully there for arrival on Thursday...

See Ya around,

Lou,

I hear you - I will be hitting the show on Sunday, and Saturday morning I will be at Eisenhower watching the USMC Demo.. I'm hoping to get off Friday, but it looks slim right now.

Suit up - you are better off taking all of your gear with you. I mostly shoot this with the 10-22mm EF-S lens, and a new 8gig card is on the way! Don't forget your cards!

Big Thanks again to 'DERF'

Lou, just bring the wide angle, or short zoom. You are close enough that a 50mm will probably be just enough, even too much in some cases.

Flashes are always good to have, but the real fun is doing it with natural light. :)

As I said earlier, this was an amazing experience. Of everyone there, I was certainly at the bottom in terms photo talent. My favorite plane of the night was the A10.

Here are some of mine...please critique! I'd like to learn how I can improve!

Great shots, Phil.

What immediately came to mind for the first and fourth picture in your series was to adjust the white balance. Sodium lamps' orange hue can really throw colors off.

I hope you don't mind me editing your photos, but I selectively adjusted the white balance in just the A-10 itself and set the white point in the teeth or eyes of the nose art. I missed the leading edge of the cockpit window.

Nice stuff guys.. Hopefully I will get to go thru the 5000 images (my wife was shooting too) from the event in few days.

Think I got some nice treetop shots of them coming back to FRG after the show. The departure was nice, first time I have been at the terminal when they left. # 2 needed a jumpstart :)

Not sure I would totally correct for the lights.. personal preference I guess.

Please shooting with you.

I am still going through the 3168 shots from the weekend. But, I wanted to put up some of mine from Saturday evening which aren't up already. Fred, a big thank you to you and the American Airpower Museum for making this night possible. The rain tried to stop it, but that only made the night more interesting.

Why do I always look angry in pictures people take of me? :)

Well, for starters.... you were carrying like 80lbs in glass... on top of that you have those sh!tty Canon straps that make your camera feel like 50 lbs without a lens and make your neck sore after 6min flat. Also you do not have a cool backwards cap like Phil, the sun was reflecting off of my awesome $180 dollar lens and I think you just dropped your bag on your foot.

Seriously, when the hell are you going to get rid of those neck breaking horrible canon straps???

LOL!! I'm actually getting a Black Rapid Double strap soon, which I heard will instantly transform me into a professional photographer, even with my shoddy skills. Not a bad investment for $130!

Or you could get an OP/TECH strap for a whole lot less and be comfortable too...

I have an OP/TECH. It will make you a wannabe Photographer with a big head. Trust me, you can actually buy a few beers after the purchase which will lead to more pictures with you and a big smile! :borat:

Well, if it's the OP/TECH that's giving you that big head, then maybe I should go with that one  Actually, it will probably be better for me, since the Black Rapid attaches to the tripod socket, which will be a bit annoying, since I use my tripod a lot (mainly because it makes me look more professional).

That lightning shot is nice Fred, but it could have used a rainbow and possibly some livestock in the foreground.

Wow, to say the least I am shocked and speechless. I really don't know what to say except for thank you! There were so many outstanding shots posted by everyone from that night I am really humbled.

I thought I knew a lot about photography and planes but that night I learned so much more and got to do it with a great group of people.

Thanks again to Fred & the AAM for giving us the opportunity.

But I can not win anyway... and if I did win, who would give me Access....

On a side note....the plane pictured above crashed on its first flight a week ago. Should be airworthy again but it will take some time. (Republic Rainbow) rolled out of the hangar behind it. The high part of in the middle of the door was for tail clearance of this aircraft.
