Now you have to get the its twin witch is even more prized. N49!- Witch is actually the more rare out of the 2 since it is in the FAA's older colors.

I thought the one with the blue belly would be the "new colors", the fuselage stripe and widget looked more retro. I've seen the 727-100 in that paint and the Convair that Senga posted. Didn't know there was 2.

Anyone seen the FAA 727 lately? / and how many are there?

On some TV program the 727 was being used to demonstrate how a plane would get stopped by the runway safety overrun area (whatever that soft material is)

That soft material you are talking about is an EMAS system.

An Engineered materials arrestor system or Engineered materials arresting system (EMAS) is a bed of lightweight, crushable concrete built at the end of a runway. The purpose of an EMAS is to stop an aircraft overrun with no human injury and minimal aircraft damage (usually none). The aircraft is slowed by the loss of energy required to crush the concrete blocks.

Ryan,
That is actually the "real" colors. The story behind N49 is that the FAA was going to paint more planes into that livery but then came up with the newer livery and then decided to just leave it i the last colors..but after that they opted for a new livery and just left it painted in the old colors.

Mario,
Yes the FAA has the 3 Convair 580s N39 and N49.

About the B721
I shot FAA's 727-25C N40 at KMGM at Montgomery, AL in 1996 and then saw it stuffed in a the corner of hanger amidst equipment with the 2 convair 580s at KACY in 2005. I don't think N40 has flown since 2005,04. I might even have been broken up now.
Its sister Ship N46 was retired many years before was/is used as a Air Marshal trainer.

N40 KMGM 1996
The first 727 I ever shot and the first "unique" plane for me.

Thanks John and Senga for the information.

Senga the 727-100 I saw had winglets, I'd have to look thru my slides but I'm pretty sure it did, unless they took them off after storage. Like the shots & funny that precise 727 was one of your first pics (what plane doesn't Senga have? ;) )

It's odd yet kind of cool the FAA has these dedicated aircraft and they're old vintage 8) . What specific purpose do they serve, you guys know?

Well if it were heading for JNU my guess would be that it has to do with the RNP approaches that AS is working on getting approved at several airports up there in Alaska!

Mario,
By the time you saw it N40 had been fitted with winglets. When I saw it in the hanger at KACY it had the winglets there too.

Yes that trip to KMGM was one of my very first trips out- maybe even my first. I didn't even know what it was that I shot. I just knew it was the FAA's plane based on the titles.

There's a lot of planes I don't have :)

Built in 1957, but color film/TV etc was generally available for most of its service life... its not a DC-3  (wish the FAA had kept that fleet flying..) Interesting though that the Convair props appear to have outlived the 727s....
