Global Aviation Holdings Sponsors Commissioning of USS New York

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (Oct. 23, 2009) – Global Aviation Holdings, Inc., parent company of World Airways and North American Airlines, has been named a Commodore sponsor of the Commissioning Committee for the upcoming commissioning of the USS New York. The Commissioning Committee is a non-profit group formally designated to fund and organize events surrounding the commissioning of the U.S. Navy’s newest ship in New York City on Nov. 7, 2009.
“North American Airlines will transport approximately 200 family members of the USS New York crew from Norfolk, Va., to New York City for the commissioning events,” said Rob Binns, CEO of Global Aviation Holdings. “As the leading provider of international air transportation for the U.S. Armed Forces, we are proud to be part of the Commissioning Committee’s celebration.”
The USS New York is a state-of-the-art stealth ship designed to deploy U.S. Marines wherever and whenever needed. The ship, named for the people of the State of New York as a tribute to those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001, features seven and a half tons of steel from the fallen World Trade Center forged into her bow. The ship will become an official unit of the U.S. Navy following the commissioning ceremonies on Nov. 7.
“New Yorkers and Americans across the country have banded together to support the USS New York Commissioning Committee and to support the sailors and Marines of this fine ship,” said Rear Admiral (Ret.) Robert Ravitz, Co-Chairman and Executive Director of the Committee. “This commissioning will have special meaning to many Americans, and we thank Global Aviation Holdings for their generous support. When the USS New York departs New York Harbor, her crew will carry the spirit of New York with them.”
Global Aviation Holdings, Inc., based in Peachtree City, Ga., is the parent company of North American Airlines and World Airways. North American Airlines, founded in 1989 and based in Jamaica, N.Y., operates passenger charter flights using B757-200ER and B767-300ER aircraft. The ship is pretty bad ass. Now if only Al Qaeda had a navy so the stealth features might actually be useful.
