A very professional looking website has popped up for an organization claiming to have serious investor-backing and 17,000 signatures on a petition to pave over Central Park and build Manhattan Airport (http://manhattanairport.org). They have some pretty detailed plans and a layout.

Probably a joke or a school project, but it's funny either way: www.manhattanairport.org (http://www.manhattanairport.org)

i don't think it's a good idea. as much as it might decrease congestion at LGA in terms of commuter traffic it would only cause havoc in the Bravo airspace. that and i like having a gigantic park in the middle of the city...

Can I have some of whatever they are smoking?

First off, how is dropping a large commercial airport in the absolute center of the busiest airspace in the world going to reduce delays in the region? Even without additional flights (and with the added airfield capacity, you know airlines are going to add flights...) this just complicates the nightmare of arrival/departure routing in the NYC area. To say nothing of having 777s or A380s full of passengers buzzing the rooftops of all those large buildings that have sprung up in Manhattan over the past 100+ years - can you imagine a Mad Dog trying to take off over the Empire State Building on a hot summer day? And of course, all the people living and working around it will come to embrace it, and don't worry, all those landmarks in Central Park, well, we'll just move them.

If this is a joke, it's both funny and well-executed!

First thought that came to mind was Meigs Field.

Seriously, its gotta be a farce. Too much congestion in that area to begin with, IMHO.

This has got to be satire.

Hey, here's an idea - drain and fill the Hudson - that will give NYC plenty of room for another airport, and the passengers won't have to wait on the wings for the ferry to pick them up

Just imagine how many spotting locations we can get at the surrounding buildings! Instead of the Mount, we can be at "Top of the Rock". I am very impressed with the creativity of this :P

I wonder who is behind it...it seems to be well funded, it could be an advertising campaign.
