For anyone interested in going... get there early. Gates open at 9 am and there is almost always people lining up before 0730. The flying display usually starts around 9:45 and lasts until 4-4:30. Lighting is a little challenging in the morning, but is AMAZING once noon rolls around. Show runway is 16-34 and you face in the easterly direction as you look out towards show center. Oh, and that runway is at most, 500 feet in front of you. VERY close.

The performer list on the website is a bit questionable... pretty sure the Super Hornet demo was dropped (the Navy axed about 40% of the Hornet/Super Hornet shows this year because of budget cuts), and I'll believe the Osprey when I see it.

For anyone interested in going... get there early.

He ain't kidding... In 2007 we rolled into the parking lot before 8:30AM, it was after 10AM before we got past security and into the show!

We are going back this year and hope that they move the security lines a little more efficiently.

The 2007 show was a little tough because of the construction and having to use the shuttle buses. Last year I had no problem at all.

Definately worth the trip.

I'm being told that the route between the exit from RI Route 4 and the airport is now all highway, rather than having to go through that residential part of North Kingstown.

Yeah, the highway was recently completed about 6 months ago. Most handheld GPS's don't have updated maps so it sends you all over the place on roads that don't exist anymore. Sigh.

When you say get there early, you mean the line starts building up at the gate? Once the gates are opened, how does it work? Is it basically a matter of who can run fastest to the fencing line to secure a first raw view of the runway? I assume parking is outside the gate?

If you can describe the layout (parking, entrance, viewing section, etc.), I would greatly appreciate it. :)

TIA

To answer the first set of questions - yes, yes, and yes. There are several different lots around the airport area so the best bet is to get there as early as you can. Like I said, 0730 is pretty early and I have heard of people starting to line up at that hour. Last year, all of the front row seats were taken up within the first 25 minutes of the gates opening. Show center is taken up with all corporate chalets and such, with show left and right always being open for everyone else. Best places to sit are at either end.

Anyone knows what's the situation with backpacks? On the show's site it states that only 'small' camera bags are permitted. I'm planning on brining two gripped bodies, 70-200 f2.8 IS, 100-400L, 10-22, 17-55, and a Bogen Tripod - all stuffed in a Crumpler Whicky & Cox backpack (tripod will strapped on the back). Will I have any issues with this gear?

Only a week to go!
I was taking to a few people a couple weeks ago at the Jones Beach Airshow and they mentioned something about a ferry from somewhere on Long Island or Coneticuit that connects to Rhode Island ot somewhere near there. Anyone know the name of the ferry company?
For me to drive there its 3 and 1/2 hours from Staten Island, so if the ferry could shave off some time like an hour that would be great!

moose135
2009-06-21, 12:14 PM
The Cross Sound Ferry operates between Orient Point and New London, CT:
https://www.longislandferry.com/Default.asp

There is also the Port Jeff Ferry that operates between Port Jefferson and Bridgeport, CT:
http://www.bpjferry.com/Default.aspx

Both ferry services charge in the area of $50 each way for a car + driver. From Staten Island, I don't think you will save enough time to make the ferry worth it - in fact, when you add in the time it takes to cross (the Orient Point ferry takes 1 hr 20 min plus check in, loading, unloading) you will probably end up taking longer to get there. If you were starting out on Long Island, these would probably be a better option to consider.

Thanks Moose for the info I appreciate it! Looks like I'll be driving; it would be $100 roundtrip on the ferry against like $50 for gas round trip.

I just checked out the thread at airshowbuzz.com about the show and the line up looks great. Looks like the F-22 will go up twice each day; just like they did with the Harrier last year.

No Doubt!

2 F22 Demo's, A JATO for Faaaaaaaaaat Albert. NICE!

As far as the Ferries go, I live like 5 minutes from the Port Jeff ferry and I'm driving around. The cost is pretty high, as Moose said it's $54 for car & driver and an additional 13 per passenger. Since we'll be heading up so early on a Sat, we hope traffic isn't going to be a concern and we'll save $100 Round Trip by driving around.

Hi all,

Other than the Fat Albert JATO takeoff, Are there any major differences (ommissions/additions) between the performances on Saturday and Sunday? I would love to see the JATO takeoff, but will be very short on time on Saturday, and will need to leave the show right about when the Angels hit the runway for takeoff (~3pm).

If you had only one day to attend, would you pick Saturday or Sunday? And why? I'm trying to weigh out my options. I can go either day, but like I said, if I go on Saturday, I will miss the better part of the Angels performance, but on the bright side, I'll witness the JATO take off. On Sunday I can stay all the way till the end, but no JATO… :(

Any other performance/exhibits I should consider?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, what a KICK ASS airshow it was Saturday! Perfect weather plus great performances by all the teams made for some great shooting.
On Saturday on the F-22's second demo; there was just enough humidity in the air to make for some nice condensation during the high speed and photo/dedication passes.
I never made it out there today (Sunday) because from what I heard on the forecast that the weather wasn't going to be as good as yesterday.
Daniel, how was it there today? Did it clear up at all?

The weather did eventually clear up enough for the Raptor, F-16, the Snow Birds, and most importantly - the Angels to go up! By the time the Angels went up, it was actually sunny :)

I noticed that Angel #5 came down for landing after roughly 2 minutes in the air... must have had some mechanical problems...

I have a combined total of some 32GB of CF cards to go though

Hopefully, I got some decent shots. It was hard reviewing them on the cameras' LCDs. The show DID start under overcast skies, and spot metering was very tough. We shall see... :D

Overall, awesome show! Can't wait for next year!

Sat's show was one of, if not the best show I've been to. It was an amazing line up and the folks at RIANG had things organized amazingly well. It was good to meet the folks from NYCA that made the trip up.

How loud were "DOG's" take offs? Holy crap my ears are still blown. Zeke looked great in the Raptor and the snowbirds were amazing. The Blues seemed a bit off but I think a lot of it has to do with the fog bank less than a mile from the airport. 6's takeoff was amazing though, so low that he kicked up a dust storm at the end of the runway.

Civilian wise, it was great to see John Klatt again. I love his performances and he's as personable as Sean D. Tucker. Speaking of Sean D, he was fantastic, highlighted by a shout out to the ASB.TV crew hanging out with the bus.

This show is first rate all the way and I can't wait to go back next year.
