Heard this on 1010 in the car about an hour ago. Happened around 1:30. Plane originated from Brookhaven. WW2 plane was
doing maneuvers off Mastic Beach when it crashed. CG on scene. Nothing more.

Now I know why I saw Chopper 12 on the pad at FRG.

Newsday says the pilot was the only person on board, Coast Guard and law enforcement are searching for him.

Second-hand info, but according to the people listening to scanners at w2lie.net...

"Mastic Beach 27 Plane Crash into water approx 50 yards off the shore off of the Smith Point beach."

"1 seater plane and it is dark green in color"

"The Signal 27 in mastic beach has turned into a Fatal 27. Pilot was never found. Scuba teams and avaition packing up and leaving Att."

Dark green plane....one of our local P-40s? Thoughts go out to the pilot, family, and friends if this is indeed the case.

>>EDIT: Newsday confirms pilot death http://www.newsday.com/iphone/ny-liplane0406,0,1419621.story

Chris, I am sorry for your loss and the rest of your family. This is now thier second loss
in a year as they had Vincent Nasta of their trio Crashed last August in Rhinebeck.
That was hard on their family. This is just wrong!

That is very tragic and very sad. If there is any solace to the event its that he passed while doing something he truly loved and that is truly honorable.

Wow, what a shame, and one less life and one less P-40

Also what frequency were the people listening to because I have been looking around that site and they dont have like aviation scanners and I rather use that then have my radio.

Bob and Chris are from Northport, the town I grew up in. My folks still live there in the house I grew up in, and it turns out (after talking to Chris at Geneseo) that Chris lives about a mile away from it. A regular occurance on a warm summer evening is an impromptu display of the P-51 and sometimes the P-40 as well, as they circle Chris' house after an airshow before heading back to Brookhaven. I've caught the display when at my parents house, and even when I'm not there, I'll get a call from my dad saying "Hey the guy from Northport was circling the house again!"

They are both gentlemen and they always took the time out to hang out with us at Geneseo in the Top Gun tent. Bob, thanks for bringing more warbirds back to Long Island, and most of all thank you for sharing them with us generously at so many shows. Tailwinds always...we'll miss you.

To Chris and his family....I don't know what to say.

Here is my video of the Baranaskas collection at their home field of HWV:

Yes it was. For those who don't remember that story...

JONES BEACH P40 EMERGENCY
On the Saturday of the Jones Beach Airshow I was descending in our P40 for a low pass on the crowd line when I noticed smoke and oil coming from my engine. I quickly pulled up and contacted Wayne Boggs, Airboss, and indicated that I was having an emergency was returning to Republic Airport. Within seconds the windscreen and cockpit were covered in oil. I opened the canopy to get a visual on the airport and lost communications with the wind and noise from the open cockpit. Wayne quickly contacted the tower and Chris (my son) who was flying the P51. Chris left the show and flew my wing into the airport.

I landed with no damage to the aircraft. Further examination on the ground showed the oil return line from the oil cooler to the engine separated from the engine block intake flange and the oil discharged into the cockpit and fuselage.

We have removed the current engine for a breakdown check and replaced it with our spare engine. The P40 will miss McGuire (American Airpower’s P40 will replace me at McGuire), but with some great help from Lenny Boyd and Ryan Parente from Ocean Aire and the use of American Airpowers Hanger, our P40 is up and running and will be back for the WWII weekend.

I would like to thank all that took part in getting me on the ground safely, Wayne, Cecil and the Republic Tower and of course my son, Chris, who is always on the “Old Man’s Wing” wing when it counts. It would also like to thank Ed Shipley and Josh (F16 Pilot from Atlantic City) who were the right there with the emergency crews looking after me.

Just another Airshow day!!!!

I was in New Jersey shooting much of the afternoon and evening, and missed the news - I was stunned when Fred called to tell me about Bob. I've had the pleasure of getting to know Bob and Chris over the past few years. Bob was always a gentleman, a true professional. My thoughts and prayers are with his family tonight.

WELCOME DAN!!! Good to see you! That was after he blew an oil hose clamp on his engine over Jones Beach...He
leaned out the side to see where the oil was coming from and the slipstream pulled his helmet
off his head and ripped it off somewhere over Massapequa. He came back but was fast on approach, and after the
aircraft floated, bounced and still wanted to fly, he added power. Moose and I were in the old
control tower and I know I was screaming power because we knew he was not at your typical goaround
power. He came in and landed. Later we were talking and he was telling me how he kept the airspeed up because I did
not think the engine would make it. I seemed all the Cool Pilot who could handle anything
and to see in is eyes is to see the pure Joy he got from aviaiton, and getting to do it with his son Chris.
I almost was not sure if he wanted to see the pictures until I said "Bob, I have never taken a cooler picture of a Great
Pilot"..... Jones Beach 08 Airshow in the Hangar of the American Airpower

When things like this happen, you get sad, but when it happens to someone you know, and are so used to seeing come this time of year, it hurts a little more. My prayers go out to his family, and friends. Here is another from last year's emergency landing at FRG.

Yes, the NTSB will be investigating the crash. When there is appropriate information released you will most likely see it posted. Until then, I wouldn't expect much speculation or conjecture.

It always breaks my heart when we lose an avaitor but this one is particularly hard. I never met the man but have seen him fly a few times locally and always enjoyed the show.

RIP.

This is so sad. Like many here, I had the priviledge of meeting him and his son and both were so very kind and it was great to see people who had such passion for aviation, and where so eager to share that with everyone around them.

The deepest condolences to his family.

If anyone learns of memorial/funeral arrangements, please post it.

On News12 they had footage of a dark colored JetRanger flying in the crash area. Was that a private ship that came out
to help?

Is that one of AAM's planes?
No. As I explained in the Jones Beach thread, Bob was flying the P-40 owned by Warbirds Over Long Island, which he flew regularly. The AAM also owns a P-40, with different markings, which also flies in local airshow events.

I heard it from an untrusted source, keep us posted because if they are doing a public memorial I will probably attend.
