JFK & LGA are both using the ILS Approach to Rwy 13 (JFK is Rwy 13L) now. This only happens "Once in a Blue Moon". The wind is 100 degrees at 24 gusting to 33.

Yep, sounds like quite a mess. JFK has 4 hour arrival delays, LGA and EWR around 3 hours.

Thank you Storm Fields for the weather update... ILS 13L at JFK is not that rare dude...done it already four times this year. WX is nasty so there's no surprise LGA and JFK will be a bit of a mess today.

ILS 13L is definitely one of the more rare runway usages....a last choice in bad weather.

JFK has light rain/mist, 1 mile visibility, 33mph gusts, 400ft overcast.

On which 3 other dates did JFK use ILS RWY 13L this year? I was only aware of 1 other day this year. The rare part is that LGA is also using the ILS or LOC RWY 13. EWR has no RWY 13 to use.

Its not as rare as most people think. This is the second time this week they were on this approach. It also happened at least once last week.

Just called around ATIS, and got the following;

LGA: Vis: 1 1/2 miles, mist, ceiling 300
FRG: Vis 1/4 mile, mist, vertical visibility 100 (not even a "ceiling" report)
JKF: Vis; ZERO, fog, indefinite ceiling 100

Should make for an interesting evening!

talk about a day to shoot yourself in the foot..lol

It was great though, caught a few 13L ILS approaches right after the fog cleared...

I was in the tower yesterday for T5 and they started using 13L early in the day around 930-1000. They were also reporting minor wind sheer at about 100 feet so it was making for some interesting arrivals just off the deck. Dont forget that we have 22R -4L cosed for the entire month due to construction. Luckily I left before it really got interesting last night.

I see that using the ILS RWY 13L is not so rare after all. They're using it again now at JFK and LGA is also using the ILS/LOC RWY 13 Approach.

They were also using it today. I was taking the Metro North into Grand Central, and as we are pulling up to Harlem all of a sudden i see a low flying Dassault Falcon(i think) from West to East. The first time i ever saw this, it was nice :borat: .

They were also using it today.
yes, we were. the annoying part is that when we're landing 13 we apparently interfere with TEB traffic :roll: , meaning much longer delays and much lower arrival rates.

I wonder what the runways would be like on Friday-Sunday?
