i'm not a big fan of commercial airplanes, but this is one sexy a$$ bird (paint scheme aside). very nice shots! i can't wait to see those at JFK on a regular basis.

on a side note, i really like the way you frames the comet cockpit shot. subtle, yet classy.

Were you using an IS/VR/OS lens?
For the most part, yes. The 100-400L IS was my general weapon of choice yesterday. For the cockpit shots, both were with the 10-22 - one HH and the other on a tripod.


What is the RAT for?
The RAT, if I remember right, is a small turbine meant to give emergency power to the plane if the engines stop turning. If you look at all of my approach shots for every PAE arrival, it's down on all of them. I guess they must test it.

they're practicing the new engine-out approach procedures. you cut the engines at cruise altitude and make a steep enough decent to make your runway. the rat is the to power the radios.

Yeah, they have something like 70 767's left to fill...
Also interesting, I took the Boeing tour yesterday and discovered that the last 744 is currently being produced. It is having the wings attached at the moment...after which it will be all 748's. Kinda sad.

Amazing shots Jeremy! I love the AF Cargo landing. Do the AF Cargo titles look different then regular AF titles? Also, will they have to repaint it in the new livery?

I'm not sure who the last few 744's are going to actually.
I know the next two that I know for certain about are both to Cathay, and one is to another (maybe Cargo B?) but I don't know which. There are three more after that...
The next few 767's are all JAL.
I saw a DAL 777 on the ramp along with three more in the plant - a few Emirates outside, the AF's, a China Southern (or is it Eastern? - I can never remember)...another V Australia and a few Qatars. A BA 777 was in the plant as well - next to come out. The 787's are progressing alright.

This is not true the RAT stands for Ram Air Turbine. On the 777 the RAT is used to provide hydraulic and electrical power in a case where aircraft electrical power is lost. On the 777 its fly-by-wire so you want electrical power available at all cost. Without the RAT aircraft could not get an ETOPS certification. There is a lot more details on the RAT but i would be here all night writing.
