The fragile ceasefire in Gaza appeared to be crumbling today as Palestinian militants set off a bomb beside an Israeli patrol on the Gaza border, killing an officer and wounding another and two soldiers.
Palestinian officials also said that Israeli troops afterwards shot and killed a 27-year-old man and wounded two others near the tense border, across which Israeli tanks and troops swarmed this month in a ground invasion of the Hamas-controlled enclave.
The violence came after the end of a week-long ceasefire unilaterally declared by Israel to end three weeks of fighting that left 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead.
The Israeli Defence Forces confirmed that a blast targeted a patrol near Kissufim, one of the border crossing it controls. “One non-commissioned officer was killed and one officer severely wounded and two others lightly wounded when an explosive device was detonated” near the Kissufim border crossing, an army spokesman said. The patrol was on the Israeli side of the border, he said.
