TSA Gets Another Earful in Burbank over LASP Proposal
At the fourth of five public meetings held by the Transportation Security Administration to hear comments from the public about the proposed Large Aircraft Security Program (LASP) regulations, citizens from all walks of aviation traveled from as far as Oregon to try to convince the TSA that the rules are a terrible idea. The meeting on Friday in Burbank, Calif., featured four TSA employees and hundreds of attendees. Much of the testimony eloquently summarized not only multiple concrete reasons why the rules have no security benefit but also how they will drive small companies out of business. Commenters included jet owner-pilots who would be affected by the proposed rules, business owners and even captain LaPonda Fitchpatrick of the Los Angeles World Airports police department, who said, “A bad regulation is no better than any regulation at all. We cannot kill the patient with the medicine, especially if we have not asked what the symptoms are and what steps have already been taken to address the disease.” Not one commenter spoke in support of the proposed regulations. The final LASP public hearing is scheduled for Thursday in Houston.
