Glad someone got Thunderbird 1 doing that sweet snap pitch-up break for final. Great shot moose! Unfortunately I was stuck in wide angle mode.

Here's a few of the T-birds yesterday from Route 110...

Great shots!

We up and getting ready to head upstate but I thought I heard some action this AM very early before 8 AM. Any action?

AS there is no guarantee the Tbirds are practicing today, looks as if I'll skip JOnes today and thus another foiled Mem Day weekend, lots to the Jewish Alps!!

Has it been confirmed that the T-Birds will practice today at Jones or no?

I woke up about an hour ago after an unexpected day of work yesterday.

Looks like I will have to make it down on Sunday. Hope the rain just disappears.

OK...I'm thinking Sat is the day to go. If another front is moving in Saturday night, then that can throw a new wrench in the works. This cold front coming in today seems pretty dry. If it stalls out and mixes with all that wet weather down in FL right now?

(This is me using my pilot/dispatcher Av weather knowledge...I'm not Jim Cantore or anybody. :D )

quote "After a very warm Thursday, a cold front will push into the Northeast today.

Parts of New England and the Atlantic Coast, ahead of the front, will still have a very warm Friday before cooling off by evening.

A few isolated thunderstorms may be associated with the front.

Areas of the Northeast, just south of the Canadian border will have a much cooler day behind the front.

Another front will move into the region by Saturday night.

Scattered thunderstorms could develop each day across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and southeast New York over the upcoming holiday weekend but conditions will probably be OK most of the time."

Well I would prefer to go tomorrow but I have work at 3:30pm in Manhattan.

Unless I go and leave early...but I'd rather not because more than likely I will miss the T-Birds.

This sucks...

Latest ISP and JFK Aviation Terminal Forecasts are up that run through tomorrow a.m.

Looks like between 900 am thru 100 pm we will see ceilings between 3,000' to 5000' broken with ths vis at 5-6 miles in haze. As far as rain it just mentions 'showers vicinity'. It looks VFR but what is considered a LOW show or a HI - LOW show??

Just got back from Republic to sum it up briefly the Thunderbirds DID practice today, Hornet went up twice and the Horsemen & B-17 arrived. Pretty much the whole practice line-up went as scheduled an hour early. 14/32 was only used by the F-18 and T-birds with everthing else operating on 19/1.

Great practice today.

The T-Birds looked great. They spent some time after the routine practicing some of the Low Show moves just in case.

Horseman & Super Hornet Demo's looked sick.

Wow what a beautiful day of Babes and Birds, Sun and Nuns.
Uh yes I said nuns. I parked at Lot 6 then cruised down to the shoreline getting there just as the Golden Knights
jumped. The beach was pretty empty at that time (9:15) but filled up especially in the main area.As I was watching
the show a whole group of nuns camped down not far from me. They had guitars, set up a volley ball net and a number
of them sat on portable stools by the waterline and looked to be meditating even with the aircraft buzzing around. Thought that was pretty cool.
Really enjoyed the Red Bull Mig. As he was flying I kept hearing a helicopter above. With the bright sun and blue skies it was hard to pick it out then I saw the MBB a few thousand feet up. Didnt know they were going to drop divers and that was neat. Then he performed his amazing acrobatics and when finished landed on the golf course right on the 14th
hole. That was a surprise and I ran over to get a close look. Picked up the skydivers and two good looking ladies and out they went as the Hornet roared over the shoreline.
The Snowbirds were a nice addition to the show but I wish their engine sound was louder!! LOL
I ran to the restroom as the Oracle bi-plane wowed the crowd and when I came back and settled in I got the best surprise of the day.......THE THUNDERBIRDS WERE PERFORMING!!!!!!
:D :D :D :D :D
I was totally at peace that they would not be there  so this was awesome!! They flew a powerful set that seemed to be a little loser than a regular performance. They did two over-the-beach-from -behind-low-and-fast screaming flybys one which literally had my left eardum rockin and rollin!! I think even that one got the nuns attention. When they finished it was kinda like they were gone, not a big finale though one TBird circled around 3X over the water and shoreline. A guy next to me commented maybe he was lost and I thought maybe he messed up and had to stay after class!! LOL!!
Just a fantastic beautiful day and now that I got to see the TBirds I can relax Sunday morning and hang out at FRG!!

It was a great day to be watching the show on the beach. Lots of vapor on the Super Hornet demos (they did two, one for each crew).

I got the beach around 8:45 and it was basically empty, so I parked myself in front of the taped-off area for the jumpers to land. Managed to get some shots of the Golden Knights parachutists landing since there wasn't a huge crowd like on the "real" days, though the beach really filled up as the day went on, mostly with people who didn't seem too interested in the air show.

I was glad to hear the T-birds would be coming; since they did a practice on Thursday I figured they might have taken today off but we lucked out. After their normal routine they stuck around and did a couple of more maneuvers; I was heading out while they were doing this but I saw at two echelon passes and a couple of loud & fast over the beach moves.

Very cool to see the Snowbirds. I think it's interesting that both the Snowbirds and the Red Arrows have 9-ship demo teams, while the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels are both 6-ship.

I liked the earlier start time; it gave a bit of extra time before the light sucked. I haven't even looked at my photos yet (I'm on a laptop without Photoshop) but I imagine that I probably came away with some decent shots.

I should have started going to the Friday practices years ago! No fee for parking, less crowded beaches and no major traffic jams leaving--it's like air show heaven! Depending on whether I feel like enduring another day in the sun (however much of it we end up with tomorrow) I might head over to FRG along the fence there.

>the beach really filled up as the day went on, mostly with people who didn't seem too interested in the air show.<

Like my nuns!! LOL but yeah it seemed like it was an intrusion on their day at the beach.

>I should have started going to the Friday practices years ago! No fee for parking, less crowded beaches and no major traffic jams leaving--it's like air show heaven!<

It really is. I had no idea they did rehearsals until 2005 when I was out on disability after surgery and was hanging out at FRG
when I heard on Tower freq. of what was going on there. Sped over to the Beach and caught a few hours of the show. The worst
part of the real day shows is the traffic in and out.

> Depending on whether I feel like enduring another day in the sun (however much of it we end up with tomorrow) I might head over to FRG along the fence there.[/quote]<

As soon as the TBirds appeared today my decision was made, FRG Sunday.

Ok, I went today and the show was amazing here are some quick notes:

Weather: I felt like I was in the perfect storm, it was very windy if you plan on going on Sunday bring a jacket and maybe even sweat pants.

The Golden Knights had to cancel the jump because wind speeds exceeded 22MPH, they did do two quick low passes

Despite the high winds the 106th and the Red Bull AF were able to jump

Ed Hamill did not fly, it may be because of engine trouble.

The schdule for the planes appearance is incorrect but it is correct that the 106th closed the show

Because of heavy winds the show started a half an hour late

Despite John Klatt's cancelation the ANG still had a recruiting booth

The F-18 demo was the legacy demo

There will be a static display of the 106th's Pavehawk near the west bath house

They did mention the accident over fire island with Bob Baranaskas and it was his sons first airshow since the accident

They did sell the official Airshow program at the retail shops near the restrooms

If you plan on going get there early and park at lot 6.

The Thunderbirds music had a lot of transformers music I was star scream to come.lol

Thats about it did anyone know what happened to the missing planes.

Chris Baranaskas made his first show appearance since the loss of his father - he kept the Mustang down on the deck on departure

Square Loop! It was def the Super Bug! Unless you mean the Leagacy Flight with the Corsair?

Moose, You should have been at the beach...the F-18 repeated the vapor performance during the hi speed run and this time the cone lasted for a good run of the crowd line! It was the first time I saw that at a show ever and I wasn't taking video at the time.

I am soooo glad the weather worked out the way it did with clear skies. Yeah the wind could have been a lot less and the left side of my face is like numb right now. That is my only complaint. Snowbirds and T-birds shows were awesome as were the Horsemen.

I'll try to post some video when I can. I may try and get to FRG tomorrow.

eric isn't on the tour this year.

ed had engine trouble earlier in the week, could still be the problem.

Yes thats what I meant if it was just the super hornet it would be the Tac Demo

LEGACY
In addition to high-performance demonstrations with a single aircraft, VFA-106 also participates in "Legacy" shows in which Super Hornets fly in formation with classic warbirds like the F-4U Corsair and F6F Hellcat. Legacy shows provide a unique comparison between where the past and present and provide some great photo opportunities.

Also another thing that ticked me off is that they played O Canada before the National Anthem.

What a great day! The weather was amazing and the views were perfect. The wind was a bit much but that also provided for some great flying. Some of the low speed maneuvers were amazing thanks to it.

Here is my .02 on the show, it’s a little long but I broke it up by performer so read the ones you’re interested in.

Matty Chapman looked great from the Parkway. Those dopes in the booths were moving like they were in slow motion and it took us an hour to get from Freeport to the beach. I was bummed out that I couldn’t see the display up close as he puts on a great show every time and he didn’t disappoint yesterday.

Ed Hamil was a no show, I think he had engine problems this week and it appears he just couldn’t get them ironed out in time. Hopefully he’ll get up today.

The Warbirds were great as always but the really nice surprise was to see Chris flying Glamorous Gal for the first time in a show since the untimely passing of his father a few weeks back. A few of us were speaking at the practice show and apparently Snort went and got Glamorous Gal from Brookhaven and brought it to Republic but we weren’t sure who was going to fly her for the show. It wasn’t quite the same without Bob flying escort in his P-40 but I’m sure he was looking down on Chris and smiling. He was and will continue to be missed.

Reesman was great in the Mig. It was a treat for me as it was the first time I witnessed a Mig 17 flying. Chuck Aaron in the Helo was really cool too. I’ve never seen a Helo go inverted so to see one do it on purpose was pretty neat. The Red bull Parachute Jumpers were absolutely insane. They bailed out over what appeared to be Tobay, free fell for 1000’, then after pulling chutes, screamed into the drop zone. Fantastic!

It was also my first time being able to see Dave Windmiller perform in a show. It’s really too bad he doesn’t perform more than he does because he puts one heck of a show. Very high speed, very high G, very original & exciting. I saw that he’s performing in Ocean City, maybe we could get him to give Dave Schultz a call and get him into Atlantic City. Just saying…

Skytypers did their usual precise flying. I love the sound of those SNJ’s as they fly overhead, it’s unmistakable.

The Horsemen were a real treat to watch. As with the Skytypers, there is something special about the sound of a P-51 roaring in at low altitude and to see these guys doing formation loops and dives was really awesome. I’m a big time fan now and I can’t wait to see them perform again in the near future. I also made a trip to the ASB tent to buy a Horsemen hat where I ran into Ed Shipley’s son. He hadn’t heard about the water tower that had been renamed after his dad & Beasley so I filled him in on the story. He laughed and assured me he would “inquire” about it with his father. On a side note, Wade Boggs made sure he clarified to the Horsemen when they were in a holding pattern to hang out over the Beasley/Shipley water tower.

Sean D was really on point today as well. He was one of the performers that the high winds really helped his display. The highlights for me were him holding the “Harrier” for what seemed like forever. When he also did his “Get to know the crowd” pass, he was so low & slow that you could count the hairs on his head. I think he was actually at eye level with the boardwalk. He does things with that plane that one should not be able to do. Amazing as always.

The Super Bug was as impressive as ever. Again, the high winds helped out some of the routine, especially the High Alpha Pass. He brought that thing down show line with a 33 degree angle of attack, moving forward at 72 knots. To see an aircraft like a Hornet that close, moving that slow was really cool, but then he plugged in the afterburners and I think he could have set off car alarms in Long Beach! The High Speed pass was one of the coolest ones I’ve ever seen as well with a vapor cone forming back by the West Bath house and carrying through most of the show line.

The A-10 is on of my favorite demos and I was glad to see it back this year. When he does his simulated strafing runs, you can just hear that thing screaming and imagine what it must be like to be on the ground and see/hear that thing coming in on you. The turning radius on that machine is amazing as well. The added Chrome for the demo really showed up nicely in the sun yesterday too.

I felt bad for the 106th. Yesterday’s weather conditions weren’t real conducive to them doing a good SAR demo. The jumpers got blown pretty far to the West and the helo was way down by the West Bathhouse for the extraction. I love seeing the HC-130 doing low orbits though, you can feel the concussion from the Props turning when they fly that close to the deck.

The Snowbirds were absolutely incredible. They did some of the best precision flying I’ve ever seen and they did Cross after Cross after Cross… I love the 9 jet teams like the Snowbirds & Red Arrows, when they fly in formation, they just look so majestic. My Father in law said they looked like a Big ol’ 747-400 turning towards the East. They also had a couple of tight passes where from our vantage point, it looked as if was 1 jet but in fact it was 3-4. They were so tight, you couldn’t even see the trailers. It’s really cool to have them here at the Beach and to see that 9 ship formation fly inbound over the Water Tower was breathtaking.
Speaking of Breathtaking, the Thunderbirds are in midseason form. Now that they have the new Block-52’s, they are really using the added power to do some maneuvers they couldn’t do in the past. They also use the new louder AB’s for 2-3 nice Sneak passes which made people all around me jump and drop their drinks. It looked like 5 may have been a little late getting to the Bomb Burst but he made up and by the time cross happened, he was right there. Another stellar High Alpha Pass into AB which shook your insides. I also loved seeing 5 & 6 split the water tower and would have loved to get up on that scaffolding to watch the show. The workers there on Friday had the best view.

Hopefully I’ll get to the airport today to do some spotting. I have to go put some aloe on my red shoulders & face now…

My youngest son went today and he told me that the F-18 vapor performance was one of the coolest parts of the show. It
definitely brought in the "ooohs" and "ahhhhhs" from the huge crowd.

Pete

Yeap, I got it and went nuts because it was my first time seeing it in person lol.

Don't mind the yelling at the end of the vid...I made some friends there and started screaming obscenities that I caught it on vid. They were pissed that they didn't.

Anyhow, here you go...

Just got back from a long day at FRG. Arrived around 10:30 and parked along New Highway. I saw the Knights plane
coming back in and the Warbirds were heading out. But they came back pretty quickly as the weather at the beach
was no go for flying. I turned on AM1100 and they announced because of low ceiling and low visibilty the show was being delayed. I cruised over to the lot by 1-9 and watched different flybys of the aircraft parked at AAM. At FRG the sun broke out and the weather warmed up but still no go at Jones Beach. But there was hope as helicopter N355AG
which was working non-stop shuttling from FRG to Jones Beach told Tower it looked like it was begining to clear. Finally
around 1PM they began the show and they pretty much compacted a 5 hour show into 2 and a half hours. They had one act after the other going out with minimal delay. The TBirds finally lined up on 1-4 at 2:35 or so and roared out with a break to the E/NE. They returned and did a formation flyby over 1 NB then turned back for a second
flyby over 1-4 then broke to the north and landed 1-4. That was cool. Later there were a number of flybys after that
including a Missing Man formation of 4 aircraft along Runway 1. Three of them landed and the fourth which I believe was a Mustang did two fast flybys on 1-9 before landing.
The Snowbirds never flew nor did the SkyTypers. Not sure why the Snowbirds didnt go up, possibly a lack of time but I'm sure someone here will fill us in.
When I left you can see T-Storms forming to the west and in fact Tower advised 355AG about one coming in along the
south shore and the pilot said he better expedite as he still had two more trips to make to Jones Beach.

I doubt there was a sonic boom.

I saw the vapor cloud yesterday, even got it on video. There's just a huge roar from the jet as it passes by, maybe your confusing that with a sonic boom??

I'm almost certain your eardrums would be hurting like hell right now had you heard a sonic boom with no protection. A sonic boom can bust out car windows at the minimum in a 1 mile radius. That could cost the Navy a heafty penny. I'm sure the pilots would be in a helluva lot of trouble as well.

Ouch that stinks, did they cut a lot of stuff off? I was wondering what the delay was.

From what I saw at FRG only the Snowbirds and Skytypers didnt fly. And from what I heard on AM1100 the ANG helo
did some type of demo. Not sure if it was the SAR one with the C-130.
It was fun at Republic but I had some dread the fog wouldnt lift or the ceiling/visibilty wouldnt comply to the TBirds protocols.
In the end it turned out to be a really nice day and even the storms held off till after 5PM.
Anyone know how long they would delay the show before cancelling? Has it ever happened?

All I can say is DAVE WINDMILLER IS THE MAN!

I got to the beach late and nothing was flying. My wife, kids & I walked the entire length of the boardwalk and back just to kill time when the 106th Helo did an abbreviated Demo. The whole time the only thing I was hearing on the radio was that the weather didn’t look good and that teams were scrubbing their flights for the day. Then, about 1:00 I heard Dave Windmiller on the radio with the Boss and he said that he was going to do a few flyby’s and make a decision at that point. Out of the East I saw him come screaming in and by the time he got to the East Bathhouse he exclaimed over the Radio, “This is totally flyable and I’m going into my routine”! At that point he knocked out a kick A$$ routine and the flood gates were opened. All of the other pilots followed his lead and we ended up getting a pretty nice show in today.

We got to see the 106th, Dave Windmiller (AKA THE MAN), Sean Tucker, Ed Hamill, the Red Bull Mig & Helo, (no jumpers though), the F-18, the Horsemen, Heritage Flight, & a great performance by the Thunderbirds.

All in all, it was a great day of flying, even if it was a little short. Dave gets all the credit for getting the ball rolling and putting on another brilliant flying display.

There was NO sonic boom. I was telling Juggs about his vapor and how everybody was going nuts about it. He said that his safety observer said it was pretty insane and he caught some of it in the mirrors. He also said that he wanted to see pictures of it and I gave him this site as well as ASB as good places to find some. He said that he was "REAL CLOSE", hence the nice vapor cone... :borat:

No, they aren't here for the show. Most likely bringing some VIP visitors for Fleet Week, they've been in the past few years.

Not a bad time at all. We circled over the bay for about 30 minutes today waiting for the fog to lift enough for us to land. The real thrill was taking off in the static display bird. Everyone was way too close and enough up getting a facefull of rotor wash. Pics and vids to follow. I'm shot.

I learned something interesting today in talking with one of the T-Bird maintainers. If you look at this shot from Saturday, you see Lead and Slot both were flying D-models (2-seaters) and Slot has a center-line fuel tank.

http://moose135.smugmug.com/photos/546128780_4bfSN-L.jpg

In the C-model, there is a fuel tank behind the cockpit - in the D-model, to make room for the second cockpit, the tank is about half the size. Their new Block 52 aircraft have more powerful engines, which are thirstier than the old jets. With the reduced fuel capacity of the D-model, they can get tight on fuel for a show, especially when it is an off-side demo like Jones Beach, so they will carry the external tank for more capacity.

Not sure why Lead doesn't have one, but I suspect it's because the Slot pilot uses more fuel during the show than Lead - Lead just goes out and flies the routine (yeah, "just" :D ) while the other pilots will be constantly adjusting power to maintain position within the formation.

Just wanted chime in and say thank you to Fred for the opportunity to join in on the History Under the Stars on Sat. and Scott for giving me the heads up. Also like to point out that Moose was super nice and welcoming when I met him at AAM... also EXCELLENT photography.. wow...

I have, between Saturday at Jones, AAM and Sunday back at Jones, over 2500 images to cull through. Obviously some are series of shots from passes but all in all, I took a lot of Giggage as I like to call it :-)

Likely I will have some to post later tonight or tomorrow. I don't know how you guys managed to go through your pictures so quickly, but I need to retire from my day job LOL

I heard the C-17 actually went into the grass, probably while making the 180 on the runway... true?

Not even sure. I was too mesmerized by the big boy to even notice!!

Here is the first set that I had time to edit ... I was very excited since it was my first time capturing this effect. It formed for only a split second a few times ... shooting at 5 frames per second, I was lucky to get it at all... which means the shutter happened to trip at the right moment, not skill on my part at all :-)

Formation of Prandtl–Glauert singularity begins...
In this image, the F/A-18 is about 1 mile away. Lens cranked all the way at 400mm and this a super crop of the frame.

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910836/original.jpg

As it gets closer, the effect disappears momentarily. Mind you, he is traveling at around 700mph

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910837/original.jpg

Air moisture is once again being rapidly condensed

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910838/original.jpg

Not quite yet...

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910839/original.jpg

You can do it

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910840/original.jpg

We are ALMOST there...

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910841/original.jpg

Damn this is hard to capture ain't it?

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910842/original.jpg

BINGO! We got it... ;-)

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910843/original.jpg

Disappears as soon as it appears

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910844/original.jpg

I have seen it like this in many posts on-line

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910847/original.jpg

Here it comes again

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910850/original.jpg

...and lastly, from behind. I never seen it captured like this :-)

http://www.pbase.com/gonzalu/image/114910851/original.jpg

This was truly a special moment for me. There is always that first time you capture something you've wanted to for a long time. All I kept saying was if I actually got it on the card, I sure hope it is IN FOCUS and WELL EXPOSED... LOL

Cheers!

Al Cerullo was the busiest pilot of the weekend. He pretty much flew non-stop on Sunday shuttling pilots and crews
back and forth from FRG to Jones Beach even when the show was in delay. At 4:30 a Tcell was moving along the South shore and he
still had two more trips to make. Did he ever shutdown or take a break to stretch his legs? LOL it didnt seem like it.
I also like the ships new colors.

Oh Brian, you're too kind... it was pure luck. I **sort of prepared myself** for it by just concentrating on keeping the plane in the frame SOMEHOW... it is VERY hard to track at this speed especially when you're so close to it. I was at the very edge of the water. From the Boardwalk I may have had a better time tracking as the angle of view is totally better the further away you are. To test this, just imagine when you're on the side of the road and a car passes you, no matter how slow they may be going, it seems that they're flying. Yet from far away, the move slowly... relatively speaking of course LOL

Oh, the gear? Nikon D2Xs (old but gets the job done) + 200-400mm f/4, hand-held (gets really really tiring at the end of the day) Can you tell I want a D3?

On day two (Sunday) I attempted the same feat. This time I switched to cropped mode (6MP as opposed to native 12MP) which gives me a MUCH SMALLER frame to work with but, it gives me 8FPS as opposed to 5FPS in full DX frame mode. Well, I missed all but one frame :-( Even at super high speed, the panning is everything.

Next time, I need to switch to the 70-200mm and just aim for a larger coverage area (AOV) to guarantee the craft will be ALL in the frame... hehehe, I hate chopping off corners :-(

Once again, thank you for your kind words!
Cheers.

Big Tim,

Hey you saved me the trouble of posting my own video, Thanks!! LOL!

Here is a link to the video where you can click on 'HQ' and watch the Horsemen in High Quality:

c9dMYkv_ ... ail&fmt=18 (c9dMYkv_Wd8&feature=email&fmt=18)

I don't know whats up with YT, but in order to watch the video with this feature you now have to add the '&fmt=18' at the end of the url link. Ever since they added that annotation feature, when I upload video the 'HQ' button is missing.

I'll try and post the Snowbirds when I can.

Hey Peter,

Great video's! I'm really glad it was an ASB/NYCA member who shot this. I rated it 5 stars, commented on it and added it to my favorites.

Wow that's a SUPERB shot... and I love the angle... although that is the typical angle I always see :-) I did manage to get this angle but the shock cone was either just forming or beginning to dissipate.

Thanks

Here is my production of the Snowbirds Demo. I am very happy that the folks at the BFCU Airshow Team got them down here. I had not seen them fly since Dayton '85, and the last time I saw them takeoff/land and fly by was at FRG in '91.

What's up for next year?!!!! How about a massive flyover of Grumman Aircraft!!
