In todays Newsday, page 17in their ad to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving and to thank the troops in part reads as follows.

It is our opinion that retailers who chose to open on Thanksgiving Day show no respect to their employees and families, and are in total disrespect of family values in the USA.

Very strong words to K-Mart and the others who have chosen to open. I do have to say that P.C. Richard does enjoy a family owned business that is well run and probably doesn't have any chance of closing any stores or going out of business but some others aren't so lucky. Anyone that knows anything about retail knows that stores need a huge Thanksgiving to X-mas period to show any profit. I have worked Thanksgiving morning most of my life but I have always been home by noon. To ask people to be working at dinner time when they should be with family is tough.

I will also use this to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. I am thankful for all I have, even in these tough times.

I agree. No problem with supermarkets being open for a little while on Turkey Day since people might need last minute supplies, but K-Mart and Sears being open is a joke no matter how desperate their situation.

I agree with the decision of PC Richard to go with that ad. Its respectable and commendable. I usually make it a point to boycott stores that are open past early dinner time on Thanksgiving. Same goes fro Black Friday. No deal is worth me getting up earlier that 8 AM over.

But here's the thing, Matt. K-mart has been doing it for years, so its not a matter of being in a desparate situation. I worked with Kmart back in...1991-1993 and they were open Thanksgiving and up until 9 PM on Christmas eve.

So in Kmarts case, at the least, its been the norm for a while.

As Nick said, Happy a great thanksgiving everyone. Enjoy your families.

It's nothing new - PC has been running an ad like that for years. It's a nice sentiment, but if people weren't out shopping on those days, the stores wouldn't be open.

Kind of curious to see what kind of #s these stores can get on Thanksgiving. I mean most are off the day after and unless K-Mart offers off the wall deals I don't see many going but then again Moose is right.

Moose is right, PC has been running this ad for years. I do agree that these retailers should be closed. I also find it totally silly that some are opening at midnight tonight.

Moose is right, the stores are open because of consumer demand, if there was no demand, the stores would stay closed.

Frankly speaking, I see no reason why a store you stay closed on a holiday, sometimes, shopping on the holidays is the best time for families to go shopping.

Now me personally, a holiday is a time for relaxation & to spend quality time with the family......

Make no mistake about it, PC isn't doing this for "Employee Rights" as much as to discredit the other consumers. As someone who used to work in retail mgmt, in direct competition with PC, I can tell you that they're known for this kind of thing.

They're not as wholesome as they'd like you to think they are, infact, they do a lot of shaddy things, this just being one of them.

Here is my two cents. Only be open if you have enough employees who need the money bad enough they would prefer to work (and pay them at least time and a half, preferably double time) in these hard times. I could be wrong but K-Mart may not have paid holidays, even if they do, a lot of people need overtime. But make sure your store can operate without the employees who do not want to be their, case closed.

I could have been off today with 8 hours of regular pay. Beeing greedy I wanted double time. I came in at 0700 six hours early so another co-worker could be off. I will be home by 730PM, have a nice Thanksgiving dinner with my wife and daughter (who I just spent all of the last two days with as I was off). For me in these hard times a couple hundred extra dollars in my check for just bascially chillin at work, due to a severely reduced holiday flight schedule and getting 2 rounds of free catered dinner at work, and still being home in time for dinner with my family was an easy choice.

For those of you who don't understand that I envy you as you are in much better place than me in terms of finances. Remember though I have worked most of my life in an industry that is open 365 days a year 24 hours a day. A small price to pay for working in an industry most of us love !

Again my two cents. I'll bet even some of PC Richards employees would rather be at work making double time. After all these are difficult times.

I'm at work right now, and I'm making double pay, which is nice, but I'd prefer to be with family of course.

They've been around for 100 years...how many shady things can they really be up too? They have to be doing something right.
