A Qantas 744 enroute from LHR-Melbourne diverted to MNL after a loud bang occured. See article for more info and IMO a pretty shocking photo of the damage !

I find it amusing that the article states passengers have been given hotels while their plane is repaired. Looks like at least a month of repairs to that bird at least to me. I hope they like Philippino cuisine? Actually I'm sure their being rebooked on other flights or maybe Qantas is sending another aircraft to pick them up but still you gotta love the media.

Thanks Stuart. the article I linked has been updated several times and was quoting the original version which thankfully is more up to date now.

I read another quote somwhere saying the Captain had an earlier pressurization warning indicator from a door on the "Drivers Side". I really enjoy the media's techincal prowness when it comes to aviation.

That's all part of the procedure - you turn down the oxygen flow in the masks a little, serve a few drinks, and it keeps the pax quiet and docile for the rest of the trip. :wink:

Since quite a few on this site were not airline enthusists yet in 1989 (or born) there are many past accidents some of you maybe not be aware of and this one, though worse and with 9 fatalities is very similar to today's Qantas incident.

United Flight 811 was a great display of airmenship as the crew safetly returned their badly damaged 747-122 back to HNL in the dark. Here is a brief account for those unfamiliar and the second link, which is a passengers (private pilot) personnel account is a great read for all of us, and I hope everyone who reads it will have a great respect for this greatly skilled UA Captain and flight and cabin crew.

Heh...when I saw this in the news, the first thing I thought was "United 811!"

That was an even more extreme circumstance...the plane lost a baggage door and the resulting hole was big enough to suck out pax. The crew managed to land the plane, but United test pilots were unable to replicate the landing in a simulator under any similar conditions.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Australian investigators are focusing on the possibility that an oxygen cylinder could have exploded mid-flight on a Qantas jumbo jet that made an emergency landing in the Philippines with a giant hole in its fuselage, officials said Sunday. Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority said Qantas has been ordered to urgently inspect every oxygen bottle aboard its fleet of 30 Boeing 747s.

"At this stage, there is no evidence whatsoever that this is a security-related event," Neville Blyth, senior investigator from the Australian Transport and Safety Bureau, told a news conference in Manila. "This is being treated as a safety investigation." Blyth said tests for bomb residue were negative. Philippine bomb-sniffing dogs went through the aircraft, particularly the cargo hold and the passenger baggage, and found no indication of explosives.

He said the focus is now on an oxygen bottle missing from the cargo hold that was left exposed when a section of the 747-400's metal skin ripped away at 29,000 feet over the South China Sea on Friday.
