View Full Version : August 1st A380 planning

So the A380 will be back to NY on August 1st. Anyone know what runway she will be coming in on, or post relevant info regarding this.

That's a long ways out to be thinkin of that bro. Wind currents and other varibales will determine which rwy they use. Today, 31's have been in use for the first time (that I know of) in forever, so that will be a game time decision.

More important question is: Who the hell wants to meet up?

I'll be around.

I'm there...haven't decided how I'm getting there though...if anyone wants to coordinate from Brooklyn, let me know...I will probably have access to a car, but if it's just me, I'd rather go straight from work on the LIRR...

It's a scheduled 4:45 PM arrival, so if it's on-time, we'll probably see it by 4:30...

I have the whole day off, so I will definitely be game for a full day of spotting (better get some extra memory cards & batteries now!). If anyone needs a ride, I'll have my truck with scanner built-in.

Also, FYI, the A380 can use 22L/4R as it is 200 feet wide, but I believe she has also utilized 13R/31L during her first visit here without issue. It will definitely be a "day of" decision as to which runway she will use, so multiple scanners monitoring multiple approach frequencies will be the way to go if you want some set-up time.

LOL Well I can't make any promises, since I'll be at the Jersey shore the day before, but trust me, NOT EVEN A HANGOVER will stop me from being out for the A380. Besides, I fully intend on bringing a 6 pack, a few beach chairs, and some teriyaki beef jerkey out for the day! That's right Kenny, I'm addicted!!!

Hey guys, welcome!

We will not know the spot that we'll be meeting at until that morning, as we do not yet know the runway configurations. Stay tuned here or use the spotting maps to determine which areas can be used once you learn the runway usage at that time.

Kenny, what I meant was, which runways can hold the 380. If i remember, only the 13/31's?

The first time the 380 came to Jfk it landed on 22 (Dont remember if it was left or right)

pgengler
2008-07-27, 10:23 AM
It came to 22L the first time, but there's no reason that it can't use other runways. The day after it arrived, when it was doing a media flight, it used one of the 13/31s. So it'll definitely have to be a day-of (maybe even hour-of) decision based on the winds & runways.

I'll try to take the day off and get out there. I haven't seen spotting in a while.

2008-07-27, 02:44 PM

I'm going to do my best to make it out although my motivation to see the A380 isn't that high since it will be here everyday, not sure if its worth leaving work early. I'm guessing she'll come in on the 22s but it would be really nice if she came on the 13s. A shot of her from that baseball field banking would be top notch.

One thing to keep in mind is that it won't be daily until October and when it enters on EK201/202 on August 8th it will arrive at 2:00pm when the light is a little tougher then at 4:45pm.

Which baseball field are you referring to? I don't remember ever shooting from a baseball field for the 13s, but would love to know of a good spot to nail those sweet 13L banks.

By the way, I don't know if you know the answer to this related question, but I think I saw some pictures a while back of afternoon 4R arrivals and I have no idea where they were shot from. The planes were in the air with gear down, and perfectly lit. Is there an afternoon spot for shooting 4R arrivals?

It's on the airport near the Federal Circle. With the cargo area pretty much out of service for shooting, you are limited for the 13s. I saw this spot a while back and asked a few of our JFK folks about it, but I don't know that any of us have shot from there yet, and don't know how PAPD will react.

Its across from the Cell phone waiting lot and old Tower Air terminal and the NAA building. The only problem is parking, you'd have to park in long term, take the train to Federal Circle and walk. Or if you know you want something park in the cell phone lot, snap and move on.

What 4R pics are you talking about? Do you know who took them?

I've been trying to search for them without luck, but I think I saw them on this site in a thread a while back -- this was after I moved to Arizona, so it would be in the past year and a half. I have a fairly good recollection of there being a Qantas photo and perhaps a few others. I remember not recognizing the name of the photographer(s) -- I think it was someone new(ish) to the site.

Does anyone remember seeing these photos? I'd really like to figure out where those photos were taken, as it would be fantastic to have an afternoon 4R spotting location.

There are places where you can shoot 4R/4L pics in the afternoon, however I would not recommend those locations as they are not in the best of neighborhoods.

I believe there is a park/open field on Bayfield Ave. off of beach 65th st. Have not been there in some time. I don't know if this is the location where those were taken. Like I said not the best of areas, but with a group may not be that bad.

I personally will probably go for where the biggest crowd is. I was thinking about bringing some shears to trim some of the brush on the top of the mounds to allow more people to fit.

Rockaway Blvd was mentioned in another thread, and it would definitely be a nice angle, but be careful, as it's a busy roadway and cops seem to dislike that greatly. I don't think the general populace is familiar with this first revenue flight, so they might not be as forgiving as the last A380 visit.

The other park near the Mounds offers good angles, but with the summer sun, I'd assume the plane would be very toplit from there, no?

If we know of an alternate rwy 4 spot, let's try to figure it out quickly, map it and figure out directions to determine who needs a ride and all of that. Otherwise, if it comes in on 4, I'll settle for a Bayswater backlit shot if I have to. I just don't want to miss it, and the group.

Otherwise, will there be anyone who will need a ride to the event?

NW winds in the summer usually means haze.

5:45pm light is still too high I think for that park. There are still a few hours of daylight left that time, and when you're underneath a plane like that, any angle other than close to sunset will be too high, I think.

Agreed about the 31s, and good advice about remaining "on alert" to move to the 31L spot. I remember a group of us did that for Pink Song once (before it was Pink Delta).

Perhaps a local could post directions to the 31L spot for the benefit of others who aren't familiar with the area. Also, I think it would be helpful if someone could post the relevant New York Approach and JFK Tower frequencies that should be monitored to plan for this contingency. (I'd post all this info if I actually remembered it -- I can't believe its been a year and a half since I moved out West!)

Thanks.

Arrival time is 4:45pm, not 5:45pm. Assuming the plane came in on 22L, I think the sun will be too high for good shots from that park. You're darn near directly underneath planes at that park, so you get lots of dark underwing shadow.

If you are by yourself yes it is not a safe area at all but in a large group like what we'll have on Friday you'll be fine. Its a rather low income area Josh that's a known high crime sector.

I've shot there numerous times without a problem. It's called Inwood Park - there is a small brown sign at the corner of Sheridan Blvd that says "NC Park" or words to that effect (It's a Nassau County park.)

Right. I'll be the tall, goofy white kid with yellow shoes and plaid pants. :borat: (the shoes are roughly the same shade as Borat over here.)

That doesn't describe most of this group - I'm a SHORT goofy white kid :)

I've shot from Inwood Park for 4 arrivals (before I knew about Bayswater), but it would definitely be ideal for 31L arrivals. It's at least a 15 minute drive from Firestone for 31R arrivals though, especially with traffic. Dare I say you don't have to use a telephoto lens from Inwood for 31L?

Let me know if anyone needs a ride on Friday as well. Shoot me a PM or give me a call. Who is planning to be out from early on in the day? I would like to start early if anyone else is interested...

I wouldn't leave mine home...took this shot of AF1 (for an example of aircraft size) from Inwood, it's at 220mm on my 100-400mm lens on the 30D:

Right now I plan to be out - will be heading to PA for the races this weekend, but will probably be in the area for the A380 arrival then head back out in the evening. I probably won't be out spotting too early, but should be around mid-afternoon.

I am planning to fly up on Friday morning. My exact plans are still up in the air, but I definitely plan to be there for the event. It appears that the winds are forecast for NW, which would indicate 31. Does anyone know whether Emirates typically lands on 31L or R?
See y'all there.

Emirates is usually 31R; 31L is usually Delta/Comair but sometimes Approach mixes things up and sends planes to either one depending on where they fit (I assume).

On the other hand, this makes a strong argument for being out there on the 1st. Once it goes into "regular" service, I think it's scheduled arrival time will be 14:15, which will make it unshootable until around October.

[quote="Phil D.":39jgbyn7]5:45pm light is still too high I think for that park. There are still a few hours of daylight left that time, and when you're underneath a plane like that, any angle other than close to sunset will be too high, I think.

Arrival time is 4:45pm, not 5:45pm. Assuming the plane came in on 22L, I think the sun will be too high for good shots from that park. You're darn near directly underneath planes at that park, so you get lots of dark underwing shadow.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 31R.

That's what I thought, Tommy said 5:45 though.

It's just best to be ready to move I guess.[/quote:39jgbyn7]

I'm planning to be there by mid-morning. Maybe early morning if I can get out of bed. Since will be my first spotting trip to JFK, so would Howard Beach be a good staring point? That is considering the wind forecast is correct (NW). Any helpful suggestions, except bug spray for the mounds

Paul,

If the 31s are in use in the morning, Howard Beach is probably your best bet if you're looking for photos, although the light won't be optimal in the morning. However, if other runways are in use, you'll have to go to other locations. I believe JFK ATIS is 718-995-8188, and I recommend you call when you're close to JFK to find out what runways are in use.

You, or anyone else for that matter, can call me or some of the other locals if you need help with finding spotting locations. My number is 917-660-7871. There's also some spotting maps on this site -- I think they're on the main page toolbar under Tools.

Finally, I highly recommend that you bring suntan lotion, as I've seen many a spotter turn bright red at the end of a long, sunny day of spotting in the summer. Friday's weather forecast is showing abundant sunshine with no clouds.

Josh,

Believe it or not I've had JFK programmed into my cell for a long time, never used it though. Until now. Maybe I'll go buy Bullfrog - suntan & insect repellent all in one. I guess I'll see you guys when I get there.

Thanks,

Rich, Welcome to the site. The A380 comes in at 4:45PM. And as to view it, it depends on which runway is being operated, also depends on the winds. Im trying to find out where we can all meet at but what you should do is call JFK ATIS at (718) 995-8188 to find out what runways are in use.. Be sure to check the spottings maps on the site as well. I dont know if you drive, but If you use public transportation, I can help you out with that.. Im going to be out there very very early in the morning so if you like, PM me if you have questions..

Looks like I'll be there around noon. So if that's the case, I guess I'll see you guys at the mounds or Burger king?

And my 100-400 won't be too much for the A380 for a full side shot? From what I read it won't be.

Soo... I'm not familiar with JFk, NYC etc, but I'd like to check out the A380 tomorrow, since my girlfriend will be on the flight. Assuming I end up at the correct location for the spotting (which is highly unlikely at this point) and she hasn't joined the mile high club in one of those showers with some sheik, will I have enough time to get back into the car and to the terminal (4?) in order to greet her, given that she has to go through customs, baggage claim etc

JFK will start the day on a pair of 22s and will look to move to the 22s with 31L for the departure bank with taxi times expected to remain at a manageable level. We will peak with 63 proposed departures in the 12z hour. For the afternoon arrival bank we will likely move to a 13L/22L configuration. :) :)

I had just gotten off the LIRR at Hicksville (4:26) and was walking south to get to my car when I look up and see this big beautiful plane slowly cruising westbound, probably right over Old Country Road!! He was about 2000 feet I would guess, not more than that. What an awesome looking aircraft. I cant wait till I see the pictures!!!

Yes, it's part of their marketing, to differentiate the sick amenities you get on the whalejet, i.e. showers in first class.
