Actually, I did meet a one armed spotter out at the In-N-Out Burger at LAX last year. He had a cool homemade device attached to the camera, so he could focus and shoot with one hand.

kc2aqg
2008-07-10, 01:34 PM
Brian, that's pretty cool! Guess you can't keep spotters from their hobby, no matter what!

It's possible that I might be flying in from Atlanta Friday morning (not sure if I want to come back Friday morning or Thursday night), but I have the day off, so I think I should be up for some spotting and definitely by the time the A380 comes in.

Man, I'd love to get some spotting in.

I work until 4pm, but I have hockey at 7. If you guys are still out, I'll swing by for a short while after work (since I'll already be at the airport). Can one of you PM me a number so I can call to see where you are at that time?

Looks like they're using the 13s, at least this morning, and with the winds unlikely to get better (the TAF has them getting even more favorable for the 13s), I don't think it's worth the trip out for me today. Maybe some other time when they're on the 22s or 31s.

Anyone ever try shooting from The Lefferts Blvd AirTrain station when arriving 13?

wunaladreamin
2008-07-13, 10:29 AM
Anyone ever try shooting from The Lefferts Blvd AirTrain station when arriving 13?Is it worthwhile to try (light, ball breakage, etc)? How does one get there from the Belt?

PhilDernerJr
2008-07-13, 10:47 AM
From the Belt, I'm not sure. I know I would get there by taking the Van Wyck south to Federal Circle, and once I'm on the circlego down the road to the right of the BP gas station and follow those roads until I get there. Check out Google Maps and you can easily familiarize yourself with that area.

wunaladreamin
2008-07-13, 10:52 AM
By the employee parking lots right?

coloneltigh
2008-07-13, 10:57 AM
Looking at Google Maps, it looks like either the Long Term Lot station (Lefferts) or Federal Circle would work. I've never been on the AirTrain via the Howard Beach station so I don't know about the Lefferts Station but the Federal Circle station is completely enclosed at the platform level and the glass is tinted I believe.

But wouldn't PAPD be on us post haste?

wunaladreamin
2008-07-13, 11:02 AM
Is there anywhere in the vecinity of Howard Beach (or anywhere else off JFK grounds) that could be good? I'm only asking cuz I'm typing from the phone as I wait for Brian at Cedarhurst.

PhilDernerJr
2008-07-13, 11:22 AM
There is a spot in Howard Beach that has been used before, but the residents are very sensitive in that area. PAPD might visit in the Lefferts area as well.

The winds are under 10kts right now, and not expected to change until around 0400L tomorrow, so they can switch to any runway if they feel the need to do so.

Still using 13's, I cant justify the 90 minute drive out there for the uncertainty.
Maybe in two weeks.

Okay, here are some of my favorite shots from yesterday. The first one was the only real shot I got at Bayswater that is worth posting. The departures were so slow, I think I took more photos of the turtles than planes and my other shots did not come out. Overall, it was a good time spotting and hanging out. Later, Brian

I'm glad you guys got out...by the time the light was any good, I was sitting on the runway at HPN in an AirTran 717...

I've been looking for off-airport locations for the 13s for awhile. There's a shopping center just north of the airport on the Belt Parkway...I was driving past it a couple of weeks ago as I saw a Cathay A340 landing on 13R...it was a great view, but it faces south, so it would probably be backlit for a good part of the day.

Federal Circle - very bad idea...I got chased from there with a point-and-shoot once.

The two areas I'm still wondering about:

1) 152nd Ave and 126th St...just south of the runway...it might be too close to the centerline for side shots.
2) The area near the Cross Bay Blvd exit on the Belt...there are viewpoint options over there, but I'm not sure about obstructions. It doesn't look to be much worse than Firestone in terms of distance from runway.

There's a baseball field near the old Tower Air terminal, bring a lawn chair, set it up, and click away when a plane goes by. You get bothered but its far enough away from the road that you might not get noticed. Only problem is parking, you might have to park in long term, take the AirTrain to Federal Circle and walk but its not a long walk.

PhilDernerJr
2008-07-15, 10:53 AM
That baseball field is the Federal Circle spot that everyone is talking about I think. The views ARE amazing. I just wonder if there's a way we could go there without being bothered.

adam613
2008-07-15, 11:39 AM
Hm...I found that field on Google Maps...why on earth would anyone need a baseball field on airport grounds?? :) Might be worth a try...if we sat just west of that group of trees between the diamond and the parking lot, nobody would see us unless they were looking for us...

kc2aqg
2008-07-15, 12:04 PM
The spot at federal circle means we need two groups to spot - one to play baseball and one to pretend to take pictures of the game! LOL just kidding...

Nice turtle shot Brian! I had no idea there were turtles around there, would have thought nothing could live in that Bay...

Great shots to everyone. Eventually I will conquer my "lush" nature and put spotting first...

Tom_Turner
2008-07-17, 09:02 PM
Kenny, Brian - It was great spending the day spotting with you guys. Especially considering how long it took to any decent shots. But a very productive day overall, when it was all said and done. Israir A330, Neos 767, Air India 777-300, TAM signature A330 - a good haul.

And, of course, the Esteemed Mr. Derner's return to the trenches of the perimeter fold.. :borat:

btw..the turtle(s) were Diamond Back Terrapins. Supposedly still moderately "common" along the entire East Seaboard in coastal salt and brackish waters, but really not seen in great numbers locally. Nice shot there Brian.

Also, the deer flies (or similar) are back in force at both the Mounds and Bayswater. Not so great. They bite even in the high sun. They're not in great numbers every summer, and in fact the last time I can remember them being this much of a nuisance was back in 2001 or 2003. So, insect repellent at those two locations might be in order for all of us the remainder of this summer. Good news is no ticks were observed.

Tom, it was fun hanging out again. The other time we met was not as good. Planeview with no special schemes or anything that interesting. Isair is still on my list, since my shots did not come out at all. I am not sure if it is my lens or the settings I was using. Either way that one is still on my list. The terrapin was really cool to see and the fishermen at Bayswater were quite entertaining. I hope to make it out spotting again soon, probably the weekend after this one, so maybe I will get to run into you all again. Take care, Brian
