Popular Mechanics has a neat story about the sci-fi movies of the past 60 years and how many of the futuristic visions in those movies have actually come true...and how many have not. For example, Arthur C. Clarke's vision of Pan Am spaceships in 2001: A Space Odyssey is almost here, albeit with Virgin logos instead. On the other hand, we have yet to create a machine even remotely as intelligent as HAL. Other stuff from movies years ago that we see in today's reality: autonomous military robots like Johnny 5 in Short Circuit...reality game shows dominate our TVs that are not much different from The Running Man...and the Brits recently proposed creating a database of children genetically predisposed to be criminals, just like in Gattaca.

Glad to see Gattaca made number one. Intense film.
