Piece of US Airways Jetliner Dislodges Over Md. (http://www.wtopnews.com/index.php?nid=598&sid=1370990)
March 23, 2008 - 4:15pm

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - US Airways says a small part of a wing of a jetliner dislodged and hit a passenger window as it flew over Maryland.

The airline says no injuries were reported aboard the Boeing 757 twin-jet airliner traveling on Saturday from Orlando to Philadelphia, with 174 passengers and six crew members aboard. It landed safely in Philadelphia.

Anne Arundel County Fire department Division Chief Michael Cox says a fax from US Airways' security office indicated that the 17.5 square-inch piece of a wing cover might have fallen somewhere in Prince George's or Anne Arundel counties or near Kent Island.

The airline says it has taken the plane out of service and is investigating.

The article fails to mention that the aircraft had just encounterd severe wake turbulance, and then a significant jolt was felt onboard. The article sorta implies the wing panel just came off for no reason.

Even so, I'm not so sure that is a justifiable reason for a piece of airplane, especially a wing panel, coming off in flight...

Extreme structural stress on the airframe. The airframe team at USAirways is second to none. As Ron said and as information on hand says. Extreme wake turbulence.
